Namco Bandai’s Smash Bros., 3DS XL And Tons More Nintendo News

Because Nintendo’s press conference was so action packed, this had to wait.

No Caption Provided

Apparently Nintendo’s semi-regular Nintendo Direct events are where fans should wait for exciting news, as tonight’s brought plenty to get everybody talking.

We have the first details on the next Smash Bros., a collaboration between Project Sora (Kid Icarus:Uprising) and, uh, Namco Bandai. Of course, the game is being overseen by the always present Masahiro Sakurai. Due to the Namco Bandai collaboration, apparently the game isn’t years off.

Also, Nintendo confirmed the rumored re-design 3DS (something I’d shot down on the podcast, but looks like I’m wrong on that one), now called the 3DS XL. The machine sports a 90% larger screen, a 4GB memory card, improved battery life, and there won’t be an AC adaptor in the box because...cost savings? The machine will be available on August 19 for $200.

Otherwise? Let’s run down the list.

Why no second stick on the 3ds redesign?

so they can sell you a redesigned accessory specific to the redesigned 3DS.

because they apparently hate the thing and don't wanna give in and confuse their market with a stick that is standard on one model of their device but not on others so developers would end up unsure how to develop their games as well.

Exactly. It's not getting a second circle-pad for ages... if ever. People said the PSP was going to get one every time it got redesigned and it never did. Why fragment the market? It's not holding the system back ... the 3DS library is great now.

I would also argue that the only real reason someone would want the other stick is for shooters (3rd or 1st). Sure, a 3rd person adventure game (Mario Galaxy Portable?) would go great with a second stick, but I don't think very many of those are going to get made for the 3DS that aren't made by Nintendo themselves. So...why bother putting another stick on? Though, I would also say why bother making the 3DS bigger, too.

My argument would be that it would not fragment the market of the 3ds, it adds versatility to the 3ds. They go bigger with this redesign and it would've made sense. Like PandaBear said it probably won't be getting the circle pad anytime soon as nothing other than an attachment, but to me it just doesn't make that much sense. Nintendo should have bit the bullet and this could have finally really differentiated the 3ds from the other DS's. I know quite a number of people that still do not know the difference from a 3DS and a regular DS other than it having 3D.

It would also be additive, not subtractive to the 3ds. 3ds developers I don't think would have much of a problem adding multiple control schemes to support two stick and one stick (I believe Kid Icarus did this) and if anything can promote the sale of the circle pad attachment.

The thing is, if it doesn't get a second stick, that will actually create greater fragmentation. There will be some people with an original 3DS, where they can potentially opt into a circle pad pro, and some people with the 3DS XL who are locked out of second stick support completely. If there is no option for the latter group, either XL owners miss out on all potential double analogue functionality, or double analogue features are dropped completely, and everyone, both XL and original owners, misses out.

Also, am I the only one who finds XL'ing portable systems...strange? What happened to the pockets and micros?

I thought the same thing too. But then I look at some recent Android phones that, when I hold them, are fucking huge and wonder who the hell would use one. But I'm seeing them everywhere now. I guess people are just preferring a larger screen and will find a way to deal with the bigger device size...

Dude, name anything coming out on the horizon that supports that thing that isn't Monster Hunter. There is nothing. No one cares. It's a dead peripheral and it's obviously been dead since they launched it by virtue of you only being able to get it from Gamestop or Nintendo directly.

I agree 100% with you, the 3DS doesn´t need a second analog stick. Games play just fine and I´d rather take those than any dual stick shooter any day.

I literally just (as in: this week) bought a 3DS. You know what? I'm totally fine with this redesign, I don't feel cheated or anything. I don't think I would have bought the 3DS XL if I had waited a bit. The 3DS is barely portable already, so making it huger doesn't benefit it at all. On top of that, I have the Circle Pad Pro all the time to make the 3DS handle more like a confortable gamepad (I have big hands), but I guess this one won't fit.

Don't get me wrong. It's a nice upgrade for those that don't have a 3DS, but, seriously, I couldn't care less about it. That's why I bought a DSi and not a DSi XL a year ago, too. The extended battery life is great, but I haven't had any problems with mine yet. And, if down the road I see that I'm not getting much gameplay from a full charge, I'll buy that Nyko battery-extender-and-circle-pad-pro addon. That one looks cool.

Might get it (the XL) if it comes in purple or black. And if Animal Crossing is awesome. Dont have a 3DS and all that, and I dont give a shit about a second analog.

On Smash, hopefully the people behind Tekken (Harada) are helping out with the next Smash Bros., those guys know how to build a fighting game, Tekken Tag 2 looks amazing. I dont expect Smash 4 to be like Tekken or whatever, but I'd hope the influence of the team that made Tag 2 is in there in the game balance and the feel of the combat to some degree. Oh and Pac-Man, Dig Dug dude, and Kazuya need to be in the game. Oh and hopefully the roster on the Nintendo side is good. I want more stuff like Lucas and Pokemon Trainer, less like Falco. Cool it will be on Wii U & 3DS though.

I bought my 3DS late and it's still a little hard to justify it. Still, more games are good, even the Virtual Console ones, that's where I've got the most value from my 3DS thus far.

Without all the Virtual Console Game Boy and original DS games I'd never finished, I'd barely have played the console at all.

Plenty of "original" games here, but Nintendo and their third parties don't seem to love making new IPs.

To be fair, Patrick, it's not really a redesign.

Many people wanted a redesign, but they got an extra large version of the current design. Sure there are small cosmetic differences, but nothing like a DS to a DS Lite or DSi. This is just an odd move. I doubt many have held off on the 3DS because it just wasn't big enough. They held off because they wanted it improved, not just super-sized. And that's the shame of this whole thing. One step forward, two steps back.

I'm sure it will be a well-made product, but it's certainly not what the 3DS market needs.

I just thought if this new 3DS redesign got the second stick, it would have added a little more versatility to the system and it would not have completely boned original 3DS owners since they could still potentially buy the secondary stick. It doesn't hurt to have versatility. Also having that second stick adds a better variety of games that could control better or more comfortably.

Well, I definitely want to see the 3DSXL for myself. If the screen is merely equal in quality/resolution/3D effect PLUS being larger, I'm sold. Don't need the thing to be portable, I have enough toss-in-the-bag handhelds already. :) And to be totally honest the two-tone shell isn't my taste. I'm still rocking my Japanese metallic blue DSi (and yes I still have Japan eShop points on it...)

The DSi XL was my favourite design of the original DS, it was pretty great. This one looks like a much nicer design than the original 3DS too, but the lack of a second stick makes it pretty unappealing.

I'm pretty disappointed to hear that Animal Crossing isn't coming until next year and Namco working on Smash Brothers sounds pretty terrible. I thought they would have learned their lesson after what Team Ninja did to Metroid.

What in the fuck is this nintendo? What the hell are you doing? The wii u and its crap name that makes clueless console noobs think its an addon /.

I mean god the president of nintendo tell people it is not a fucking add on at there face and they still think it is a fucking add on its time to change theccrap name or start handing out books on why it is not an addon.

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/06/jimmy-fallon-thought-the-wii-u-was-a-wii-peripheral/

then you suprize launch a huge ass 3ds like 2 weeks later after saying no there is not one it does not exist during e3?

OH and the wiiu has like what 2 games for it at launch just like the crap n64 only this time they dont even have that 3d polygon gimmick.

FUck I dont even know if nintendo is bring out that wiiU this year it will probabley be dealyed like the crap n64 too since nintendo did not try to sell the thing so they must not be bringing it out.

If i was a fucking nintendo investor still I would be pissed I sold my stock.

That's a relief. Thing to worry about now is it the better choice to buy an XL or a regular one. Give up the choice of using the circle pad pro for having a larger screen, longer battery life, free flash card....

Screw it the deal is too good, I can wait a couple more weeks just to get a much better 3DS than what is out now.

Listen Nintendo, either format your media messages after Apple, or don't. Quit trying to have your cake and eat it too. Apple doesn't have company-specific press briefings AND have vague, meandering press conferences at large industry events.

Because that's only for Japan. The rest of the world is still getting an AC adapter, and since basically everyone in Japan has a DSi (the AC adapter is the same), they shouldn't care either.

If you want to feel insulted by this new 3DS version, you're focusing on the wrong aspects, dude.

Better battery life, might have to get the 3DS redesign. I sold my original 3DS because of the poor battery life and it never felt comfortable in hands. Having the curved edges looks like it would help. But no AC in the box, that can't be right

I'm not surprised that so many commenters are upset by the 3DS XL's lack of an AC adapter; that's what stood out to me as well. I can understand that it's really important for them to hit the sub-$200 price point, but removing the power adapter is not the way to do that. I don't know if Japan is a different case or not, but how many parents in Europe are going to buy this for their kids without realizing that it doesn't contain a power cord? This is a completely baffling decision by Nintendo. They really come across as having zero idea what they're doing.

Also, I thought reps from Nintendo have said previously that they don't believe in DLC. The DLC stages for NSMB2 clearly seem like throwaway challenge levels, but it's still odd that they're not going to be included with the rest of the game.
