New MKvDC Trailer

Apparently Jeff enjoys Mortal Kombat. Who knew?

Midway sent around this new trailer for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. This game currently sits at the top of my “NEED TO KNOW MORE MORE MORE” list for E3. From ditching my post-lunch classes in high school to play Mortal Kombat II to effectively disappearing from college to go to an arcade trade show Reno and see the public unveiling of Mortal Kombat 3, the series played a large role in making me want to write about games. It’s been slowly losing me over the last few years, and I have high hopes for this upcoming game, since it’ll be running on a new engine and will revamp the fighting system again.

It’s a pretty good trailer, showing off a few new things while showing that, yes, Sonya will still have the leg grab. And Scorpion still removes his mask for a fatality. Here are a few thoughts:

- The shot of a dude holding his opponent and running through walls is awesome. Is that gameplay or a finisher?

- The in-air kombat as you fall out of the sky still looks awesome.

- You shouldn’t put Shang Tsung in a trailer unless you’re going to have him morph.

- The focus on Klose Kombat makes that aspect of the game look pretty major, but I’m unable to get a decent feel for how it’ll play. Actually, my first gameplay question is “what happens when you press down?” Back at the Midway event where they announced the game, Ryan and I talked to Ed Boon, and he made it sound like a lot of the gameplay changes–including the decision to duck or sidestep–were up in the air.

- In the images released alongside the video, Sonya has a tan line.

- Between the ice breath and laser eyes, Superman looks like some unholy mix of Sub-Zero and Kano. That’s rad.

- I really, really hope that the announcer and voice effects for Scorpion are placeholder or were just thrown in for the sake of the trailer. New beginning, remember? Time for a new announcer and another vocal session involving the repeated shouting of “GET OVER HERE.”

- I hate to be the one to say this, but fire-breathing skulls are on the verge of becoming passe. I hope that Scorpion’s fatality is more than just a “let’s see how this old thing looks in this new engine” remake.

Look for more on this game to come out of E3 next week. Speaking of which, I guess I should start doing laundry and getting ready for that…
