Ninja Theory Is Definitely Developing A New Devil May Cry

The Heavenly Sword people are taking the reins of Capcom's hallowed character action series.

 ...Dante?
 ...Dante?
Rumors of Heavenly Sword creator Ninja Theory's involvement with a new game in the Devil May Cry series have been swirling for some time, and they only got louder when Capcom trademarked a new DMC game yesterday afternoon. Thankfully, all the speculation was finally proven true this morning during Capcom's TGS 2010 press conference, as the publisher and Ninja Theory confirmed that the two studios are indeed working on a new installment in the series--a new installment simply called Devil May Cry.

Whether this fresh DMC is a sequel, spin-off, or a prequel is still being left up in the air. The younger, leaner, and much more hip-looking Dante gives off the kind of vibe we'd expect from the latter, but Ninja Theory and Capcom aren't billing it as such. Instead, it's being suggested that it's a reboot for the franchise. Here's specifically what Capcom has to say about the new game.

Set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC will depict a duplicitous world where nothing is ever as it seems and the line between good and evil is constantly blurred. Spurred into action by the promises of a trusted relation, Dante bursts into this world intent on revenge at any cost. DmC will retain the series’ signature mix of sword and gunplay but add additional weapons, all new powers and a revitalised gameplay system as players encounter the game’s devilish mix of enemies and navigate the rich, interactive environment.

That doesn't necessarily mean the wheel is being reinvented here. The games' characteristic mix of sword and gun combat will be present and accounted for in this latest DMC, according to GamePro. The below footage backs that up and also introduces a neat narrative monkey-wrench.

== TEASER ==Capcom Japan design leads and creative dudes, including series veteran Hedeaki Itsuno, will be heavily involved in the creation of DMC alongside Ninja Theory, similar to how Inafune and crew helped with Dead Rising 2's creation alongside Blue Castle Games

As for details, that's all we've got at this moment. Feel free to pop in some The Cure and peruse the images above and your trailer below at your leisure while we grab more information.

I still won't be happy until we true DMC fans join forces, and complain enough to get Dante back to normal, just like how we true inFAMOUS fans complained enough to get Cole changed (even though I'm still not satisfied with that, but I'll complain about the voice actor the next time they release another trailer).

From the small part where Dante talks it doesn't sound like it.

WHY did they change him?

couldnt they just come out and say its a spinoff? that would justify it. But i dont not the this whole character alteration bullshit

Dante said outright he doesnt like to smoke, because it destroys the body.

Seems like they only made him smoke so he could appear "bad-ass" to the 12 year olds.

Fuck this shit.

Cigarette burns FTW.  I don't really care what young/different Dante looks like, as I don't plan on marrying him or introducing him to my immediate family, it's not really something I'm worried about...

Looks like a weird action game that had the name Devil May Cry slapped onto it along with the name Dante.
I mean seriously this is just disgusting.

I think he looks wicked and I love the setting in this game.

EDIT: didn't notice before, but he's using Rebellion and it can stick to things.

Big Fan of DMC and I'm intrigued  to see where this is going. I have to hop on the wtf train though, when it comes to Dante's new look. Hopefully they tweak it cause it's kind of strange after playing the other DMC's. If it is a reboot though then I understand... But that doesn't mean I likey! NERD RAGE ON! O_O

@TwoOneFive: We need a break from "Beefcakes" that constantly come from the Unreal Engine. Guess they should have just given him the noisy cricket from MIB.

Y'know, this would be much more interesting if that wasn't supposed to be Dante or if this wasn't a DMC game. Like, seriously, what's wrong with an original grimey British character action game.

Seriously, it looks so cool and then he says "Dante" and I was done right there.

Cool. It's not obvious if this is a series reboot or if it is a telling of Dante's younger years, but I like the look and style of the trailer.

I like the new look. The gaming community is full of nothing but people who complain and that is why we get the same garbage year after year. Just look at Sucker Punch giving into fans and changing Cole back to being completely generic looking.

Straight into my most anticipated. Everything I've seen heard of Ensalved looks incredible and the combat looked great in Heavenly Sword. Can't wait to see what they do with it; the DMC series desperately needed this.

Conceptually, I don't mind a reboot for the franchise with better narrative direction for Dante's character. But... that... thing is not Dante. Dante is not a thin heroin addict.

And Dante doesn't smoke. He eats pizza.

Alright. My biggest worry is Ninja Theory at this point. The best parts of Heavenly Sword were the writing and cutscenes.

It was "okay" at best gameplay wise.

It seems studios with "Ninja" in their name are in the business of taking apart well liked game's mythologies lately.

@p_p_o_d: I'm okay with all of that except using the Unreal Engine. Capcom's own MT Framework has produced much better looking and running games.

I'll admit, I'm disappointed. I've been waiting for a DMC game for 3-4 years now and quite simply, this is not it. Where's the too cool for school Dante, with his swagger and cockiness? All I see is a Saint's Row reject. It's a very odd move for Capcom to make with one of it's most popular IP's. Of course I have to remain optimistic, it can still be a good game, but it's already pissed off the hardcore fanbase. Introduce new gameplay elements, fine. New story, I'm ok with it. But making a complete character overhaul is almost never a good move. I'd get the impression I'm playing a DMC knockoff rather than a continuation in the series.

Devil May Cry could probably use a reboot at this point. And I always thought Heavenly Sword was an unappreciated game.

I'm digging what they're doing with this game. I prefer the old Dante (except the second Game where they turned him into an angry character), but I mean, he had to be young at some point in his life.

If it's a prequel it's okay, but if it is a reboot then they are taking this in the wrong direction.

Anyway I'm sure we will see a "Cole" done to him.

As a long time fan, I am horribly disappointed.

"Limbo City" looks like a Gotham City wannabe. The enemies look like they're straight out of Silent Hill. Dante's attitude is completely gone (as are his muscles and masculinity), his sword.. is that even a sword? And what happened to the music? Why is Dante looking like an emo Twilight reject? Is he gonna start sparkling in the game?

Ah, hell.. I'm gonna go cry in a corner.

This looks stupid and very off-putting for a DMC game. I find it strange they came up with Nero and his mysterious arm, which was done very well, and now they go and reboot the whole thing. What a shame.

He isn't supposed to be. If the game is a reboot of the franchise, something it desperately needed, than Ninja Theory isn't obligated to keep the the original design of Dante. Plus, he fucking sucked as a character, anything they can do to make him more tolerable is a plus.
