Nintendo Confirms New Console for 2012, Details at E3 2011

And so it begins.

While you were asleep, Nintendo confirmed plans to release a brand new console in 2012. The device will make its first public (and playable!) appearance at E3 2011, which kicks off this June 7 in Los Angeles.

The official word comes via a brief note released on Nintendo’s Japanese investors relations Web site. The document is a stiff pairing of paragraphs that, unfortunately for us, reveal nothing more than the fact that Nintendo plans to release a successor to the Wii in 2012.

Nintendo may soon become the first company with a next-generation machine.
Nintendo may soon become the first company with a next-generation machine.
== TEASER ==“Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011,” the statement reads. “We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.”

“Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012,” it continues.

The word on the 'net suggests this will be a HD-capable console that might be more powerful than the current console juggernauts, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Other reports allege its tech will be on par, while still others only maintain the device be able to output HD. In other words: it'll be more powerful in some way. How much more? Shrug.

A Kotaku report claims the device's "main" controller is host to dual-analog sticks, a total of eight buttons, a front-facing camera, and a 6.2 (diagonal) touch screen. A source has told CVG since this screen will be able to display HD visuals. Rumors (are you sensing a trend?) stemming from 01net indicate the controller will have a built-in Wii sensor bar as well, which leads us to other rumors the console will continue to support motion control. Next-Gen.biz is reporting, at least, that the device's motion control capabilities will be better than what Sony is offering with Move
Sure, why not?
Sure, why not?
Also, the console is supposedly set to be backwards compatible with Wii and GameCube games because...why not, right? What doesn't this console have? A cappuccino machine?

According to a recent IGN report, apparently Nintendo is thinking about going with “Stream” as its official name. Project Cafe is reportedly the codename.

Wait, someone thinks they're going to call it "Steam"? Why not just call it "Windows" while they're at it.

YES! That means Sony and Microsoft will be forced to launch new consoles as well! Then I can get one of those instead of whatever Nintendo is making!

Hey Brad, it's Stream not Steam, just to be clear and not to create any confusion with the Valve online store.

As long as I can have my PS3 and/or Xbox 360 for a few more years without having to think to buy a new console from Microsoft and Sony, I couldn't care less.

Sounds like it's actually going to be a good E3 this year.  I haven't minded so much that this console generation has lasted so long, since I don't have that much time to play games.  However, my Wii is collecting dust, so it's exciting to see the potential of something new come out.

I wonder if there is any reason for the name "steam". Valve has showed interest in the consoles.... Do you think there is any chance that there is an unlikely partnership building there? I mean, with Steams beautiful system for for online and digital downloads and Nintendos wide spread appeal and usability.... Both have few franchises which are considered the best.
Anyway, while i am weary about the potential let down (same as i got with the wii), I am getting more interested in this.

Edit: my bad, just noticed i misread the name. Stream....well, if there is any meaning behind that name, it could suggest nintendo moving toward digital downloads more.

So it looks like Sony and Microsoft will be forced to put out a new console resulting in having to spend money on a new Xbox. Hopefully that wont be for another 2 years, they still have  adequate shelf life left.

I wonder if we're in the middle of the last hurrah for 360 and PS3 triple-A titles. With a handful of trilogies coming to an end, multiple franchises announcing what is (probably) their last game this generation, and this new announcement, I could see E3 being a really BORING proposition for Xbox and PS3 this year if they don't find a way to support Kinect or Move.

Interested in hearing what Nintendo has to offer, though I'm really anything but optimistic at this point.

A Nintendo console after 6 years isn't that unreasonable... I mean, that's how long every other console of their's has lasted. I have no idea what to expect from this thing. E3 will be where the magic happens. No matter what people on here think, Nintendo knows how to make money.

More interested on how they'll handle online and social features. With this new console they have absolutely no excuse to dump the stupid Friend Code system. Lastly, a more 1:1 motion experience is also inexcusable. It'll be a waste of money and research if that shit is excluded in this "Steam"

It doesnt take much to make a console thats more powerful than the xbox and ps3 these days anyway. Any GPU released in the last 2 years, and a good amount of RAM, and a cheap ass corei5.

Looks like it's Nintendo's turn to steal the show at this year's E3.
