PlayStation 2 Now $99

You officially have no excuse to not be playing Persona 4 right now.

Dude, just go buy it now.
Dude, just go buy it now.
As was rumored earlier in the week, Sony just lowered the price of the PlayStation 2 to a scant $99. The announcement was made by John Koller on the official PlayStation blog. There's a lot of back-patting in the announcement but one does have to be impressed at how long this sucker has been around now. Outside of Persona 4 from last year (it might take you awhile to finish I've heard) there's still a decent amount of original content coming out with a new Ghostbusters and MotorStorm game hitting shelves soon. And of course there's nothing to stop you from picking up the slew of music- and sports-related titles that will continue to hit the system till its deathbed.

According to Koller, this year will bring the game catalog up to 1900 PS2 total games, 250 of which are "Greatest Hits." That's 13% of the catalog being packaged as the best of the best. While I know it's mostly marketing, doesn't that percentage seem a little high to anyone? Any way you look at it though the PS2 price-cut is still a big deal for the simple reason that this means Sony plans to continue to support the console for quite a while. And why not? Activision made more money last year on the PS2 than it did on the PS3. While that's not likely to repeat again, the PS2 is still going to push enough games this year to still be relevant in the market.
