PlayStation VR Priced at $399 USD, Scheduled for October Release

The bundle will not include PlayStation Move controllers or the PlayStation Camera, the latter of which is necessary for use of the headset.

No Caption Provided

Details on the last of the "big three" VR platforms has finally arrived. By way of an official blog post and an event happening at this week's Game Developer's Conference, we now know that Sony's PlayStation VR will release in October of this year and will cost $399 in the US (with a €399 price tag in Europe, £349 in the UK, and a startlingly high $549 in Canada). As a reminder, the Oculus Rift was priced at $599 USD and Valve/HTC's Vive came in at $799 USD. So, on its face, the PlayStation VR is clearly the most affordable of the three. There is a small catch though...

For $399, you'll get the VR headset itself, an external processor unit, the necessary cables, and a pair of headphones. A Sony press release explains that the external processor will be used for "3D audio processing, Social Screen, and Cinematic mode," which runs against some early speculation that the box would be used for doing the bulk of the VR rendering itself. Social Screen is what Sony is calling the PlayStation VR's ability to mirror a player's vision on a connected TV so that others can watch as they play, and cinematic mode lets users view traditional content on a virtual screen that sizes up to 255 inches.

Notably absent from this package, however, are the PlayStation Camera and the Move controllers. The latter are only used with a subset of PlayStation VR games, and reports from the event in San Francisco say that the majority of the games that Sony is showing off today don't use them. But the PlayStation Camera is a different story: As far as we understand it, the VR headset requires the Camera for head tracking, so users who haven't already purchased one will need to do so separately. Not only could that make for a bad shopping experience, it also really undermines the $399 price point. I get it, you want to come in under $400, but it's a bad look when you fail to pack in a necessary component in order to do that.

In better news, Sony announced that the launch line up for the PlayStation VR will be packed with games:

Today more than 230 developers are building content for PlayStation VR, from smaller independent teams to larger studios at the industry’s top publishers. We expect to have more than 50 games available from launch in October 2016 until the end of the year. ... Additionally, The Playroom VR, from our very own Japan Studio, will be available as a free download from PlayStation Store for all PS VR owners at launch. The Playroom VR will include six games that can be enjoyed with friends and family, demonstrating why we believe VR can also be an impactful experience when it’s shared.

I don't expect each of those 50 games to be a blast, but with that many, there's a good chance that we'll see some cool stuff by the end of the year.

While I wish that the pricing on this thing was more straight forward, I'm still pretty happy with the overall price. Assuming that the PlaySation Camera continues to retail for around $50, $450 seems reasonable since the competing headsets come in so much higher than that (especially since they'd each require a better video card than I currently have).

I try not to leave articles like this on a question for the reader, but this seems like the right place to do it: Now that details on the Rift, Vive, and PlayStation VR are all available, are you going to take a leap into virtual reality this year? If so, which way are you leaning and what was the deciding factor? And one last question that's a bit harder: Is there a game that you're especially excited to play in VR, or are you more interested in it as a platform with potential?

I think I know how I would answer these questions, but I'm incredibly curious what y'all think!

I'm quite relieved that the PS VR will be coming in at that price point, as even with the tacked-on cost of a camera, it's below what I would have predicted. And if am going to get into VR in the near future, that headset will be the only one that I can afford, since my own PC is barely on the edge of "capable" based on Valve's benchmarking tool.

My current concern is whether or not Sony, Oculus, and Valve can cooperate in a meaningful way to keep VR at least somewhat unified as an experience. It won't be good if they let all the software languish in separate walled gardens. This is a particular concern for Sony since theirs is potentially the least "powerful" of the three, and is limited to console. Can Sony resist the temptation to keep things "exclusive" and instead release drivers or software that could enable PS VR owners to use their headset on a PC? The use case for PS VR would be much stronger if one could theoretically employ it as a "budget" Oculus or use it with the flood of VR programs that's already coming down the pipe.

@poncho90: PSVR doesn't work without the PlayStation Camera. There is fragmenting of the user base this way. Hopefully Sony comes up with a bundle soon that includes the camera.

I'm glad the camera isn't packed in. I along with millions of others already have one.

I'm certain more bundles will be available soon with cameras.

Not cheap enough - and that is a shame.

VR really needs to punch into the mainstream and Sony was the best bet for that. However at this price point, I can't see it happening.

$450 (+console price) is a lot of money for technically limited experience. However if PSVR works with the PC, it might be a real killer.

Fuckers!

UK retailers have already upped their move controllers to £10+ second hand whereas they were nearly throwing them away a few months ago. I knew I should have picked them up early.

As for me, I've been burned on the Kinect and although the Wii had some fantastic experiences, I also burned out on it's novelty rather quickly, so I will (try to) hang fire on this one.

@dragonbomb: It doesn't work at all? What a joke. So what can I do with just the headset? Watch movies? Sony really need to sort that shit out now because otherwise it's gonna make a lot of people disappointed.

Already have the camera so that's not an issue and between now and October I'll get the needed PS moves. Had a great time using the HTC VR set hoping this give the same kind of feeling that did so I’ve already pre-order this.

I think I'll most likely get one of these, don't think I'll pre order because that is still some money. I'll wait and if word is good I'll see if I can buy one for the christmas season.

Just show me a game that makes me interested in this. I'm still waiting on that. And 400 bucks is still a lot of money. I think it'll be better to wait and see if there's a second gen of these things. I don't see the software catching up until then anyway.

Then again I could go buy one a week after it comes out, I'm fickle like that.

Seeing this price is the first time I've thought I could maybe afford VR, so it's hard to say beyond that how this changes things. I've just operated under the assumption that I'm so far away from buying VR that it isn't worth it to compare the various sets.

My gut feeling is this will be marginally better than a gear vr and nowhere in the same league as the Vive/Rift. But time will tell for sure.

Well, the shopping experiences can be mediated by retailers just offering "in store" bundles. You get the VR Pack, PS Camera, and a Move for $550...or whatever. I have a PS Move controller and that funny Navigation Move thing too, so I could just pick up the Camera now.

In fact I just went on Amazon and they are in stock and on sale for $44 USD....so, I literally just got one before the rush (LOL - if there ever is a rush).

It makes sense not to include the camera because it keeps the price at $399 and they probably consider a large number of PS4 users already have the camera. The camera SKU already exists in the supply chain, from a cost perspective it's a smart play because they don't have to make a (more expensive) deluxe PS-VR SKU, and they can boast the $399 price (even if it is not 100% honest).

Honestly, the prospect that I could use the headset to watch/play content on a simulated 255 inch display is far more intriguing to me than the actual VR stuff. Games designed to showcase new tech are almost always terrible, or at the very least their forced tech demo features detract from whatever experience the game itself was trying to produce. Looking forward to the Year 2 batch of PSVR games though.

I think Sony missed their price point. Charge $300 (350 with camera) and I think you pick up more impulse buys from those on the VR fence. At $450, it's still a big investment for a handicapped VR experience and too close to the Oculus price point - for those with a beefy PC anyhow.

For me, it came down to trust. Which of the Big 3 do you trust to still be around supporting and iterating on their product in 5 years? HTC is a disaster, you can call it Valve VR all you want, but that's an HTC product. Sony's gaming division is doing well, but they don't exactly have the best record when it comes to supporting their devices and peripherals. I'm looking at you PS eye, PS move, PSP, PS Vita, and PlayStation TV. VR adoption is going to be a slow burn, how do we know that Sony will still be championing the product in 2 years once shareholders find out that the company isn't making money on VR headsets? It's still by no means a guarantee, but I preordered the oculus as they have the financial backing and commitment to the medium to survive lackluster sales for several years.

So I'm in Canada, for shits and giggles I looked around. Nobody basically carries the PS3 Move Controllers up here anymore, and the PS4 Camera isn't even carried at EB Games anymore.

Sony is going to have to completely repopulate the marketplace with these things up here.... (also fuck stuff is expensive now in Canada).

PS4 Camera seems to be 70
PS3 Move Controllers seem to be 55, x2 that's 110
PSVR is 550
PS4 is 430

so that's $1160 + Tax = $1299 for VR. Holy Christ.

@hardtarget: Amazon.ca has the camera for 60 and the move controllers for 52 each, but yup - still really gets expensive, quick. If you don't have a PS4 I think the sales proposition gets very difficult (but you can say the same thing about whether people have a computer that'll run Oculus/Vive) but the selling point really relies on there being a lot of people who own a PS4 or would get one anyway for other games.

As a side note, for those aghast at the Canadian price, it's the exact same USD equivalent as the UK and Europe figures. As a Canadian, this doesn't offend me any more than converting an other USD price over to CAD does.

VR is a premium experience that currently requires premium hardware to be properly appreciated.

At the moment, the Vive is really the only game in town, the other two just cut too many corners and require too many concessions. The PSVR might scrape the bottom of the "good enough" barrel, and once the Rift Touch controllers are out it should be "good", but only the Vive is going to deliver genuinely transformative VR experiences out of the box.

In time VR will be a mass market proposition, for example I'd expect the next generation of consoles to be totally VR capable, but right now if you want to do it right there's a serious cost attached.

And that's ok, because it's always this way. VCRs, DVD players, Plasma TVs, etc. New technology is damn expensive.

Might as well charge an extra $70 CDN over the current exchange rate since they can, right? Who knows, maybe the loonie really will be that much more in the tank by October. Good thing I live on the border.

Okay, it's still the cheapest option, and probably my preferred choice - I have PS4, a camera, and I wear glasses so the flip down is ideal. I know that I'm pretty nausea resistant. I think it's actually fair to guess that Sony, the experienced hardware manufacturer, wins this round because of a lower price.

I still want to see a game. One game that makes it worth it.

But that's what E3 this year will be for. I expect that's when I'll make my decision, or once it actually releases. I still say beware preordering these things until you know you'll have a good time.

It was revealed that the price is 550 AUD in Australia (about $20 under the current exchange rate). It's pretty good, considering the Rift costs more than twice as much with shipping ($1100+)

Edit: oops, I somehow got all the numbers wrong... Fixed now.

Oh, and for further comparison, the Vive can cost about $1400 to buy in Australia. So the Playstation VR (and the Gear VR, I guess) is the only option for a sane person here.

I have a pretty good PC, but there's no way I'm spending $400 on a video card AND $600+ on a headset, then controllers, games, etc. VR isn't worth all that.

I am going to hold off until the post-launch honeymoon period cools down for VR in general. If PSVR offers a quality experience and has system selling games that appeal to me and really work in VR then I will probably dive in at the first sale/discounted bundle.

Ace Combat is the first game that has me genuinely excited for the tech.

I'm leaning toward the Vive. Not only do they include everything you need in that one package, and not only is it backed by Valve, but I'm pretty sure Hover Junkers (one of the coolest VR games I've seen so far) is being made for Vive first and foremost. Other than that, my decision will come down to whatever can run Star Citizen in VR. My current machine can't even run Star Citizen at max settings at 60 FPS, let alone rendering it on two screens at 90 FPS, so it looks like whatever machine I buy in 2018 will be built around VR. Sorry, Playstation VR, but you're built for PS4, and that's just not a powerful enough machine to run the real VR games coming out soon.

Not a terrible price, but when you consider the highly-likely lack of (good) games for it overall for a long time when compared to the Oculus, and having to add the cost of the move controllers and camera, it's really not too far off from the rift's price, and yet objectively worse in every way.

Golem looks cool but they're gonna have to show me some real impressive shit for me to get one. I do have the Rfit pre-ordered but I'll buy any other VR headset I need for great exclusives!

Canadian price is $17 extra before tax for what reason exactly?

Would that be in CAD? You realize different currencies from different countries are not equal in value don't you? You should expect things to be about 23% more for you than in the US with the current exchange rate, and that doesn't include VAT or whatever the other taxes you guys pay.

@zombievac: That was $17 higher than the exchange rate on the day that I posted. Today $399 USD is around $517.94 Canadian, and the retail price (which doesn't include tax) of PSVR is $549.99. I don't see why we should expect to pay more than the exchange rate and I'm hoping the price isn't locked in and changes with it.
