Premium Members FAQ

Got questions about your membership? We're answering them here.

Update: I'll continue to add questions I'm seeing a lot to the bottom of this document.

Psst... Big changes happening at Whiskey Media. Don't panic. The answer to most of your questions are likely below. This isn't a goodbye post or a hey, thanks for joining us on this awesome journey, but we're outta here fabrication. It's a general trumpet call to let you know that we're working with two separate companies to build even bigger sites. For those of us at Whiskey, that means we'll spend all of about a weekend celebrating before we jump back to our jobs of building, creating and making you laugh. We'll make sure to keep you in the loop along the way.

Two companies?

Yes. We wanted to make sure our separate brands and employees ended up with companies that best fit their strengths. Here's the scoop...

Giant Bomb and Comic Vine are now in the same family as GameSpot and GameFAQs. The entire editorial teams from those sites are coming over, as is Dave. This marks a reunion of sorts as we’ll get to work with our friends over at GameSpot again. Giant Bomb will continue to operate as its own unique site.

Tested and Screened, along with all other things Whiskey Media are being acquired by BermanBraun. They've got big plans too, as you've likely seen on Tested already. Andy and his TOP MEN (our engineering team) are going to be busy building a whole slew of new sites that carry our mark of community first philosophies.

I'm a premium member, what does this mean for me?

Nothing for the moment. Your services continue as normal across all of the Whiskey sites as well as on Roku, Boxee, iTunes... etc. On April 15th we will migrate the billing for premium memberships to Giant Bomb and Comic Vine so that we can separate them from Whiskey Media proper. Don't worry, features on the other sites will continue to work, as will your username as passwords, but you will only billed by Giant Bomb. No split billing will occur.

We made this decision based on the fact that 98 percent of our subscriptions originated with Giant Bomb and the vast majority of our premium content has focused on that site. However, we also recognize our users have their own ideas about the value of their premium plan so we wanted to make sure you had a full month to sit with these details and use the same billing tools you're used to using. It is very important to us that we don't sucker punch anyone and that you can cancel your plans easily at any time.

Got all that? OK, well there’s more. Those members that do stick around past April 15th will immediately receive GameSpot Total Access memberships for free as a thank you for continuing to support Giant Bomb and Comic Vine. These will be distributed through email as a gift code, so their redemption is optional.

We'll also send out a general email as well as other announcements before April 15th so you're not left with any surprises.

What about the Whiskey Media store and my coupons?

They will continue to be valid. You can use them now, or at anytime. The store isn't going anywhere.

What about my wiki points?

Your points will continue as normal. Past April 15th your combined Whiskey points will be used for your submissions across all our sites. But any points earned after that date will only increase your total on the specific site you earn them on.

Hey, this has me worried. I've seen others sites get purchased and become

pretty crappy. What makes this different?

It's a valid concern. But if you've made it this far (let's be honest, some of you have been supportive of us for years) you know that beyond the logos on our sites are a group of people who have committed their lives to building a better Internet. Our sites will continue to thrive because quite honestly, it's what keeps a lot of us going every day. And as hokey as it may sound, we want to continue having an audience that trusts us as stewards of our respective expertise.

Continue to keep us on our toes. Now let's start building.

I have more questions!

I (Dave) will be around personally to answer all questions late tonight and throughout the weekend either on this thread or through twitter (@enemykite). As you'd imagine it's a busy day and I've still got to run to the city this afternoon to meet some peeps so thanks ahead of time for being patient as I go through your questions later today.

Will premium content still continue?

Yes, All the Giant Bomb premium shows you've gotten used to over the last few years will continue in their regular format. Give us a week to get used to our new digs, but we'll have new content coming your way within a week.

Are Giant Bomb memberships being rolled into Total Access at GameSpot?

No. The programs are separate. The GameSpot account is an added bonus that is optional. We're committed to building our premium member base and will always look to add more value to our users.

What are the plans for the API?

It will continue to stay up. It's been provided AS IS for a few years now, but it's something we very much would like to revisit and make better.

@CodeFire: Don't you think you are being a bit pre-emptive? Wouldn't it have been better to wait and see if things change for the worse? You already gave them your money, cancelling isn't really doing anything at this point.

Personally, I think they have built up enough good will over the years they deserve a chance to prove themselves capable of maintaining editorial independence and the "feel" of the site.

Still not using Gamespot though.

This might be too "insider" or something, but I was wondering why CBS would want two game sites. Wouldn't having Gamespot and Giant Bomb be a little redundant?

I migrated from GS to GB with Jeff and Ryan. Now I feel like I'm watching my sister go back to her abusive boyfriend. I'm sure this is the right thing though.

Keep in mind that Giant bomb and gamespot are very different sites. If anything, this allows GB to go even crazier in the future.

I'm cool with this as long as Gamespot and Giant Bomb stay within the boundaries of their own respective sites. I do not want to see restricted content on GB because of their new bosses. As long as GB stays what it is with its premium content and stuff, I'm totally fine with this.

My subscription payment was made in the belief that I was giving money to GiantBomb and WM, not fucking CBS. I have bought a ton of stuff from the WM store, even those free subscptions for someone less fortunate.

I did all this to keep GB/WM independent and believeing they stood for what was said.

This website was founded with the idea of sticking it to the man, I didn't think that ment sticking it up his ass though.

I feel even worse today than the day I read that dreaded Penny Arcade strip. This is just horrible.

I do sincerely hope that the GB crew got some cash for this though, no one deserves it more. Retire and be happy, I knew it would end some day, I just hoped it would last a little longer.

So if I used the promotion a couple of months ago to already sign up for next year, how do I proceed on getting a refund for that extra year? I was more than happy to support Whiskey Media but I don't want to give money to CBS...

I'm wondering this as well, or at least what will happen since I still have 15 months left on my subscription including the year from the promotion.

Considering Jeff's background, I don't like having Gamespot anywhere near Giantbomb. I come to Giantbomb because I'm sick of "normal" gaming sites like Gamespot and IGN writing stupid hypocritical things all the time; Giantbomb is really just about playing games and showing them off and having us make up our own minds. I know they're going to stay separate, I just don't like them being part of the same corporate family.

I'm excited for Tested though, and I wish Giantbomb nothing but good luck. I just don't want their "skeezy cousin" creeping in now. Screw Gamespot.

Really though, I just want to see Quick Looks return:)

@sparks50: @rebgav: Good points on you both, I haven't been to Gamespot in such a long time that I honestly don't know what kind of audience they attract anymore. Hope this doesn't lead to any civil war forum crap (though I don't really post much anyways tbh).

Just to put a little more perspective on this. The guy who fired Jeff has long since departed Gamespot and he was a corporate/ad guy.

Secondly, Whiskey Media was SOLD along with Tested, Screened and Anime Vice as well as the infrastructure of the sites. Giant Bomb and Comic Vine had to find a new home or it might have resulted in their closure. I would rather they take the chance with CBS than disappear.

As long as the business side of things doesn't influence the editorial side of things, then I support it. I go to Giant Bomb because I like to know what the staff thinks about videogames, not what publishers and advertisers want you to hear about videogames.

As long as I never have to go to Gamespot, I don't even want to redeem that full access or whatever the hell they do code, and I can cancel my current subscription so I don't get billed in the future I'm good. The major reason I subbed was cause I liked the whole independent vibe and knowing my subscription helped in some small way, now I don't want to give money knowing it has some ties to Gamespot and Gamefaqs. Hope this works out but I won't be surprised if it doesn't.

From what I gathered from a few "Jar Time"s and I think Bombcasts, no. Not necessarily.

Jeff had plans to make his own 'thing' for a while and it happened to coincide with his termination. Which gave him the perfect opportunity to create GB.

Him getting fired may have given him more incentive, but I highly doubt its the entire reason.

So you guys will be moving in, or atleast NEAR, the Gamespot offices. But what will the actual relationship be between your two websites? Will it be just limited to you guys going to lunch with them more often, or will there be any cross-over in content or editorial staff? Like, is Tom Mcshae going to start appearing on bombcasts or something? I'm still very confused about that.

Its a fair point, and to be honest my blind fear and panic have long gone now that ive seen what the guys had to say for themselves and thought about it. Still a bit uneasy about the whole thing, but ive got to trust that the guys know what they are doing.

Change is always scary... especially when considering how many videogame websites I have loved and then lost over the past few years, but I am continuing my subscription for as long as GB continues to produce the craziness they put out every week... I don't care who is behind the scenes, I trust the dudes here to not sacrifice their integrity, and that they wouldn't have done this if they felt it would hurt the site in anyway... plus hearing the words John Davison makes it all easier to believe...

Sad to see Will & Norm split off, but they seem to have done okay too.

Different doesn't have to mean worse... but in the world of videogame websites and podcasts, the recent past makes it hard not to worry a little bit whenever things change.

i am not worried about giant bomb at all

i think it will be good to throw some more money behind one of the best internet communities out there, but am sad at the split out of tested/screened as i would say i frequent them about as much as GB on any given day and enjoy a consolidated membership scheme

Remember when everyone freaked out over paid memberships? I hope most people here, that are adults, realize that things change. Sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. If they said "Hey we are moving to a new building and are our own website now. We are no longer part of whiskey media" What would the reaction be? If you truly have been here since the beginning stick around a little longer and see how this plays out. By all means cancel your memberships if you feel you can't support this decision. I do ask anyone thinking about leaving to at least hang around until we all see where this goes.

This could totally destroy what they have done here the past few years. I think GB will continue to be GB. But if things head south I will gladly take the "I told you so"s like a man, and quietly bury the part of me that loved what GB is/was.

I trust you guys and have faith that you will continue to be proper duders regardless of where your office is located. I'd love to see John Davidson on the bombcast every once in a while, hes a cool guy who knows about video games and how to write about them.

Does this mean you guys can get gamespot money for a flight control cockpit thingy?

All i have to say about this is the I'll decide on what to think after they clarify what happened between GS and Jeff. GS has everything in the world to win on being honest, and Giantbomb has everything to loose on this going wrong.

At the moment I have 100% confidence in Giantbomb, but if something goes wrong they'll take some of the black cloud hovering over GS since they booted Jeff out of there office.

So to conclude this little rant, if everything goes well GameSpot has earned some, maybe 40% of my love back, and have another 6 months to work before it's billing-time. On the other hand if all goes bad, and I don't believe everything they say, I guess I'll save $60 a year since GiantBomb will have to take part of that blame from me 8(

So in the end I wish you guys all the best, and want to thank every one over at GiantBomb and Whiskey media for a bunch of great years. And here's hoping this is not the end, that there will be many more great years, with loads of great stuff from my favorite site.... GIANTBOMB!!!!! ^_^

@Fallen189: Yes, it's staying the same. same forums, same url, same content but more than likely it will be more frequent and higher budget. Some people are just going all hipster with their "I liked it better when they were small and independent"
