Premium Members FAQ

Got questions about your membership? We're answering them here.

Update: I'll continue to add questions I'm seeing a lot to the bottom of this document.

Psst... Big changes happening at Whiskey Media. Don't panic. The answer to most of your questions are likely below. This isn't a goodbye post or a hey, thanks for joining us on this awesome journey, but we're outta here fabrication. It's a general trumpet call to let you know that we're working with two separate companies to build even bigger sites. For those of us at Whiskey, that means we'll spend all of about a weekend celebrating before we jump back to our jobs of building, creating and making you laugh. We'll make sure to keep you in the loop along the way.

Two companies?

Yes. We wanted to make sure our separate brands and employees ended up with companies that best fit their strengths. Here's the scoop...

Giant Bomb and Comic Vine are now in the same family as GameSpot and GameFAQs. The entire editorial teams from those sites are coming over, as is Dave. This marks a reunion of sorts as we’ll get to work with our friends over at GameSpot again. Giant Bomb will continue to operate as its own unique site.

Tested and Screened, along with all other things Whiskey Media are being acquired by BermanBraun. They've got big plans too, as you've likely seen on Tested already. Andy and his TOP MEN (our engineering team) are going to be busy building a whole slew of new sites that carry our mark of community first philosophies.

I'm a premium member, what does this mean for me?

Nothing for the moment. Your services continue as normal across all of the Whiskey sites as well as on Roku, Boxee, iTunes... etc. On April 15th we will migrate the billing for premium memberships to Giant Bomb and Comic Vine so that we can separate them from Whiskey Media proper. Don't worry, features on the other sites will continue to work, as will your username as passwords, but you will only billed by Giant Bomb. No split billing will occur.

We made this decision based on the fact that 98 percent of our subscriptions originated with Giant Bomb and the vast majority of our premium content has focused on that site. However, we also recognize our users have their own ideas about the value of their premium plan so we wanted to make sure you had a full month to sit with these details and use the same billing tools you're used to using. It is very important to us that we don't sucker punch anyone and that you can cancel your plans easily at any time.

Got all that? OK, well there’s more. Those members that do stick around past April 15th will immediately receive GameSpot Total Access memberships for free as a thank you for continuing to support Giant Bomb and Comic Vine. These will be distributed through email as a gift code, so their redemption is optional.

We'll also send out a general email as well as other announcements before April 15th so you're not left with any surprises.

What about the Whiskey Media store and my coupons?

They will continue to be valid. You can use them now, or at anytime. The store isn't going anywhere.

What about my wiki points?

Your points will continue as normal. Past April 15th your combined Whiskey points will be used for your submissions across all our sites. But any points earned after that date will only increase your total on the specific site you earn them on.

Hey, this has me worried. I've seen others sites get purchased and become

pretty crappy. What makes this different?

It's a valid concern. But if you've made it this far (let's be honest, some of you have been supportive of us for years) you know that beyond the logos on our sites are a group of people who have committed their lives to building a better Internet. Our sites will continue to thrive because quite honestly, it's what keeps a lot of us going every day. And as hokey as it may sound, we want to continue having an audience that trusts us as stewards of our respective expertise.

Continue to keep us on our toes. Now let's start building.

I have more questions!

I (Dave) will be around personally to answer all questions late tonight and throughout the weekend either on this thread or through twitter (@enemykite). As you'd imagine it's a busy day and I've still got to run to the city this afternoon to meet some peeps so thanks ahead of time for being patient as I go through your questions later today.

Will premium content still continue?

Yes, All the Giant Bomb premium shows you've gotten used to over the last few years will continue in their regular format. Give us a week to get used to our new digs, but we'll have new content coming your way within a week.

Are Giant Bomb memberships being rolled into Total Access at GameSpot?

No. The programs are separate. The GameSpot account is an added bonus that is optional. We're committed to building our premium member base and will always look to add more value to our users.

What are the plans for the API?

It will continue to stay up. It's been provided AS IS for a few years now, but it's something we very much would like to revisit and make better.

Well I'm confused as all hell but if this helps make all the Whiskey Media (or whatever they are now) sites bigger and better in the near future then I approve. I'm more interested in the hidden politics behind these transactions. For Gspot to become associated with a Jeff Gerstmann joint like Giant Bomb I can't help but wonder if their are hard feelings from past events. However I'm aware that it's a sensitive matter so I guess details will only be revealed if all parties involved agree to it. I just want the highest value possible to my entertainment needs. If you guys get the resources you need then I would really love to see the return of TANG. Whatever you do just keep me laughing until the end of days which is probably soon.

The only question I have is what streaming service will you be using in future live broadcasts? Justin.tv has been a pretty reliable player and I would hate to switch to an inferior streaming service.

If they said "Hey we are moving to a new building and are our own website now. We are no longer part of whiskey media" What would the reaction be?

That's the whole problem though, right? It's not the split from Whiskey Media that has people in a tizzy, it's the acquisition by a huge, faceless media conglomerate and the perception (fair or not) that they are joining forces with Gamespot. Fucking Gamespot! Not exactly a site renowned for its independent voice and likable personalities, which are two of GB's biggest draws.

Yeah, because he loves her. He will probably kill her one day, but still..

I don´t know, this whole thing is ultra weird.. I mean it sort of looks like they maybe weren´t left with a lot of choices. And Gamespot is a very different place now. If Jeff and crew really thought this through and trust the guys they´re working with now, something good might come from all this business nonsense.

OK. I thought premium would be swallowed by Gamespot All Avcess (sounds like a porn site package) I still think the offer was badly timed, mind you.

To be honest I never saw you ever claim to build a better internet. If I remember correctly, the big live live show live was all about jokes around the fact the content you create is half assed and not serious, even though it is enjoyable.

I was never convinced that you cared, only that you had fun doing it.

I'm extremely suprised to see every fundamental belief be dropped on a whim to return to the dark side you once left. The extremely negative community reaction should be an indication that you did the wrong thing.

The premium members are like stockholders, they essentially owned the company before it was sold behind their backs. I feel sorry for you guys.

I just hope they don't change it into something as slow and clunky as the gamespot site.

Something kinda grimey and suspect about this whole thing..

We have to migrate our premium accounts into Gamespots? Tested, Anime vice and Screened are getting left behind?

That seems a bit cruddy and low blow-ish to me for some reason. I smell an April fools gag.

Business people ruin everything.

I really want to believe that this won't have any negative impact on GB, but I don't think anyone can be certain about that. Over the past 9 years or so, I've watched almost all of the gaming sites I loved completely crumble after being bought.

Every one of them promised that the buyout would be a, "good thing," infusing the sites with money and notoriety and whatever business infrastructure the buyer already had in place. Then, everyone lost their jobs (except for whatever skeleton crew the buyer decided would keep the wreck afloat).

The only thing keeping my hope glimmering is that GiantBomb is coming at this from a position of strength, not desperation. I'll hope for the best, but continue fearing change, as always.

@LoveYouSomeEric: Yes that is a valid point. I've been around since APD. I've always seen where the guys were coming from in the decisions that they made, even if i didnt agree with it. Whether content related or on the business side. Obviously this has affected me the most. I'll be honest that when I first heard this news I was stunned and thought, not my giantbomb. I was at work and was unable to watch the live stream. After watching it and reading this faq, and all updates by the various staff members I will give them the benefit of the doubt and will stick around. I urge others to as well. Cancel your subs if you must. If its free whats the trouble with going along and letting the bombers try and quiet your concerns that things will change for the worse, and that things will actually get better. Again this is my opinion. I feel that they have earned it from at least me to see where this goes.

I was following this story hourly if not more frequently. Will watch the livestream at 4 and make no more comments until more info is out there.

Peace out for now GB community.

I feel worried, not sure if i should or not but i do. Because all i hear in my head is Jeff saying "big corporations are cold hearted businesses that want to get paid." And whats going to happen with that. Plus everything becoming fucking kid friendly i like the fact the whiskey media group was more of a adult content.

But i am coming along for the ride either way.

I personally don't want a voucher to a stupid fucking website that sucks in every way. If you guys just needed money to do what you guys wanted to do it makes business sense. However no way do I believe that you have full control and at some point you guys ended up giving something up. Hopefully it won't hurt the brand.

I also had a WTF? moment when the news broke. I've been a long time fan of the Giant Bomb Crew for many years now, even back into the GameSpot days. Not only are they informative, but entertaining at the same time. I don't think that the GB crew would work as hard to build what they have to just leave us out in the cold. The GB is about the people, and they get that. I trust that the crew knows what the best plan is to continue to provide us with all the great content that we have come to know and love. I too will continue to keep my premium membership, and think that everyone else should to if they want to see the best of what the GB crew has to offer, which is yet to come!!!

Firstly, congratulations Dave. I don't know if this move was made out of preference or necessity but in either case, I'm glad Giant Bomb is continuing and I hope you guys made some profit off the deal. You deserve it.

My question for your FAQ is, how will premium memberships be reflected on the other sites after the chance? Honestly, Giant Bomb made up about 85% of the time I spent on Whiskey Media sites anyway (most of the rest being Tested which I recently gave up on) but nonetheless, the membership fee covered all the sites. Will it carry to those sites too and will there continue to be premium content there?

Just to put a little more perspective on this. The guy who fired Jeff has long since departed Gamespot and he was a corporate/ad guy.

Secondly, Whiskey Media was SOLD along with Tested, Screened and Anime Vice as well as the infrastructure of the sites. Giant Bomb and Comic Vine had to find a new home or it might have resulted in their closure. I would rather they take the chance with CBS than disappear.

Its a fair point, and to be honest my blind fear and panic have long gone now that ive seen what the guys had to say for themselves and thought about it. Still a bit uneasy about the whole thing, but ive got to trust that the guys know what they are doing.

Our initial reactions were the same :) Yeah, I'm still uneasy too, but keeping the faith since these guys have earned my trust over the last few years.

Now that GIant Bomb works for suits, what happens with the great developer relationships you had? Will you have a bar to have fun events at the office?
