Premium Members FAQ

Got questions about your membership? We're answering them here.

Update: I'll continue to add questions I'm seeing a lot to the bottom of this document.

Psst... Big changes happening at Whiskey Media. Don't panic. The answer to most of your questions are likely below. This isn't a goodbye post or a hey, thanks for joining us on this awesome journey, but we're outta here fabrication. It's a general trumpet call to let you know that we're working with two separate companies to build even bigger sites. For those of us at Whiskey, that means we'll spend all of about a weekend celebrating before we jump back to our jobs of building, creating and making you laugh. We'll make sure to keep you in the loop along the way.

Two companies?

Yes. We wanted to make sure our separate brands and employees ended up with companies that best fit their strengths. Here's the scoop...

Giant Bomb and Comic Vine are now in the same family as GameSpot and GameFAQs. The entire editorial teams from those sites are coming over, as is Dave. This marks a reunion of sorts as we’ll get to work with our friends over at GameSpot again. Giant Bomb will continue to operate as its own unique site.

Tested and Screened, along with all other things Whiskey Media are being acquired by BermanBraun. They've got big plans too, as you've likely seen on Tested already. Andy and his TOP MEN (our engineering team) are going to be busy building a whole slew of new sites that carry our mark of community first philosophies.

I'm a premium member, what does this mean for me?

Nothing for the moment. Your services continue as normal across all of the Whiskey sites as well as on Roku, Boxee, iTunes... etc. On April 15th we will migrate the billing for premium memberships to Giant Bomb and Comic Vine so that we can separate them from Whiskey Media proper. Don't worry, features on the other sites will continue to work, as will your username as passwords, but you will only billed by Giant Bomb. No split billing will occur.

We made this decision based on the fact that 98 percent of our subscriptions originated with Giant Bomb and the vast majority of our premium content has focused on that site. However, we also recognize our users have their own ideas about the value of their premium plan so we wanted to make sure you had a full month to sit with these details and use the same billing tools you're used to using. It is very important to us that we don't sucker punch anyone and that you can cancel your plans easily at any time.

Got all that? OK, well there’s more. Those members that do stick around past April 15th will immediately receive GameSpot Total Access memberships for free as a thank you for continuing to support Giant Bomb and Comic Vine. These will be distributed through email as a gift code, so their redemption is optional.

We'll also send out a general email as well as other announcements before April 15th so you're not left with any surprises.

What about the Whiskey Media store and my coupons?

They will continue to be valid. You can use them now, or at anytime. The store isn't going anywhere.

What about my wiki points?

Your points will continue as normal. Past April 15th your combined Whiskey points will be used for your submissions across all our sites. But any points earned after that date will only increase your total on the specific site you earn them on.

Hey, this has me worried. I've seen others sites get purchased and become

pretty crappy. What makes this different?

It's a valid concern. But if you've made it this far (let's be honest, some of you have been supportive of us for years) you know that beyond the logos on our sites are a group of people who have committed their lives to building a better Internet. Our sites will continue to thrive because quite honestly, it's what keeps a lot of us going every day. And as hokey as it may sound, we want to continue having an audience that trusts us as stewards of our respective expertise.

Continue to keep us on our toes. Now let's start building.

I have more questions!

I (Dave) will be around personally to answer all questions late tonight and throughout the weekend either on this thread or through twitter (@enemykite). As you'd imagine it's a busy day and I've still got to run to the city this afternoon to meet some peeps so thanks ahead of time for being patient as I go through your questions later today.

Will premium content still continue?

Yes, All the Giant Bomb premium shows you've gotten used to over the last few years will continue in their regular format. Give us a week to get used to our new digs, but we'll have new content coming your way within a week.

Are Giant Bomb memberships being rolled into Total Access at GameSpot?

No. The programs are separate. The GameSpot account is an added bonus that is optional. We're committed to building our premium member base and will always look to add more value to our users.

What are the plans for the API?

It will continue to stay up. It's been provided AS IS for a few years now, but it's something we very much would like to revisit and make better.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but if I were to continue my subscription past April 15th, would my money essentially be going to CBS? Also, do you guys even need a subscription anymore? I understood it before, but now that your backed by a giant corporation like CBS...? It doesn't really seem like you need that kind of support from us anymore.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm excited about this move.

Alright, after seeing the 40 min video on Jusin.tv and reading this, I'm excited about this. It can only mean more content without any drawbacks, since this site is going to continue being independent. Looking forward to the live broadcast at 4, since it will explain why Gamespot is not, in fact, an evil corporation; and why we can feel easy that Giantbomb is, sort of, more or less, sudo-joining them. Well, I expect only great things from this, so make me proud!

lol. i'm german. this is awkward.

I would like to think that it's because you respect this community more. But has this community earned this, supposed, respect? I... would like to think so, hehe.

I have to say I'm not sure what to think about this. I do not think gamespot is a well designed site, and I have attempted to use their site. I'm glad that comicvine is going with, and Dave is critical. But I've been part of this community for years, I signed up for premium as soon as it was available, and have followed the team through all of the changes. And i'm sticking with the site, I couldn't not. I love the content, and everything that goes along with it. But the thing that makes me truly hurt and upset in this, is the loss of the Whiskey Media family. I use all of the sites, especially giant bomb and screened, often switching between those two during browsing sessions. There was something cool to be a member of such a big community of sites. I have a connection to screened, comic vine, and tested (and anime vice to an extent) but not at all to gamespot, and I don't want one. This feels like the breaking up of Whiskey Media, and that's what I signed up for. Again, I'm not leaving. But this sucks. I'm sure it will be fine, and probably better for the team at Giant Bomb and eventually for us. But the Whiskey Media member shirts that I have will almost not mean anything anymore. Being a "duder" means a little bit less now.

Kind of a sad day. Whiskey Media was such an awesome group of sites (and people). Sounds like this was a necessary business move, though.

Really not a fan of Gamespot so this whole thing makes me feel pretty uneasy, but I'll try to keep the faith. As long as Giant Bomb continues to operate as a separate site with the same goals as always in mind it can't be all bad.

I was just about to say that as well.

I'm hopeful, excited, and positive about the changes and wish the crew the best, but I wouldn't exactly use all the words said in that original post.

More out of curiosity than anything else: Why were you guys at your place with the all stuff from GiantBomb (for quite a while already, it seems)? You obviously aren't properly installed at CBS/GS yet, so why did you already have to remove everything from the old building? It sounds like you had to rush out of there all of a sudden.

Congratulations otherwise, it's great to see the business grow!

Also, why do you guys want to grow so badly? I don't know, I feel like a small community is better than a large community? What makes you think bigger is better?

I guess I'm just looking back at those Sausalito, basement days with rose colored glasses, but man those days were great. I'm not saying these days aren't great, they are, but the continuous growth has me worried.

As long as GB continues to provide value and has directive independence, I'm happy. The day they don't, I'm not. So I'm not concerning myself over much with preemptive "rabble rabble apocalypse!", and I'd encourage others to do the same. Wait and see won't kill you. Simultaneously I'd encourage the GB crew to maintain that sacred editorial pact with the user base we have come to expect, as abandoning it could turn catastrophic real quick.

It was a rich experience for me to see the shit-eating grin on Jeff's face as he loved and embraced our great friends at gamespot. That was great. I especially liked it cause i left gamespot total access and followed Jeff to GiantBomb after the Kane and Lynch fiasco and vowed never to go back. So, um, yeah, greed is a hellava drug i guess.

Oh and for everyone wondering, red flags to watch out for:

-increasing membership fees, duh.

-Changing of features.

-More integration of gamespot and GB user base. The merger of GB accounts over to gamespot is very key for them, duh.

I don't fully understand this. However I think it's quite depressing that GB couldn't remain fully independent, and that this is probably an indication for other independent sites across the Internet. The numbers were obviously just not adding up in order for the guys to continue the way they were. I think as followers we have to give them the benefit of the doubt for the time being though.

really hope jeff doesnt get loads of 'was it hard for you to go back to gamespot after blah blah blah' at the next PAX panel- easy to think of it as 'going back' when really its going forwards [also easy to jump on the fuq da establishment bandwagon, cause bigger companies with more money must be evil, right?], some people went crazy when they left sausalito, but hey it turned out well [my opinion]

looking forward to seeing what gets produced!

@CodeFire: I'm not sure why you see it this way. Here is how I see it - the majority of whiskey was bought by BermanBraun. This includes tested, screened, AND the technology behind these websites. That means, the old whiskey office now belongs to them. GB and CV were bought by CBS - so they needed to move out.

Can someone explain this?!

Jeff confirms that he was fired because of bad scores, if I heard correctly. Then Jeff says he trusts Gamespot and has no problem working for them and if he did he wouldn't be there. I feel as though I missed something that explains the logic behind that. I was expecing him to say the reason he was fired had nothing to do with ad money, but then he confirmed that it did.

He's either pulling a Neville Chambarlain with his Peace in Our Time and genuinly believeing that Gamespot won't pull the same thing twice, or he is getting paid enough to not care, or I misunderstood what he said.

EDIT: People have informed me that I missed the part where he said the peopel who fired him are not in the industry anymore.

No one will know the details of the deals they made, but why would the dudes at Gamespot ever have the power to fire the people at Giantbomb? Giantbomb was acquired by CBS... CBS is the only one who has any sort of say in hiring and firing, and even that may be limited depending on the type of contract they made.

I haven't watched the video yet, I saw the news on my RSS feed and so i came here to ask questions. I don't know if they've been answered in the video yet. If so, just ignore this post.

  • When you guys say the editorial team of GB is moving to GS, will Vinny move too? To be blunt, GB to me is Jeff, Vinny and Dave. I love you all but the back bone of GB for me is you three.
  • Did you come to them or did they come to you? If they came to you and wished to purchase the sites, did you feel like a badass that after they fired you all from GS 2-3 years ago now they want you back?
  • When you you guys say that the engineering team is going to develop more sites with the same philosophies, does that mean Giant Bomb is no longer part of that philosophy? Will the engineering team still be acquired by GS parent co.? Will they work on the GB sites or will the GS engineers work on it?
  • Will we still see QL, Giant Bombcasts, RPG, LOLs and TNT?
  • Was this the plan from the beginning? Were you all looking to sell the sites after they became popular?
  • Are Tested and Giant Bomb still part of the same family after the mergers? Or will they be separate, i know Will never really liked Ryan, but i loved how the two sites did things together.
  • After the merger will you become more transparent with what Whiskey Media really was? Was it profitable? If it were, you wouldn't need to merge. What were initial and end goals and what were some of the real complications with running an independent site?
  • I know things change, but what happened to the goal to develop an independent voice? Wasn't that the goal from the beginning with Giant Bomb?
  • How much Influence will GS parent co. have on GB? With Whiskey Media the business and the editorial team was said to be separate. How will this change?
  • Will you now call Giant Bomb, The New Giant Bomb?

The one thing I appreciate, respect and admire about any site, tech, company and people is their transparency. Transparency is the best gift you can give members of the community. It breeds trust, it helps us understand motives and above all it helps us get past changes. I bet the most popular videos and podcasts were the ones where you guys took us through the process. I hope in the next couple of days, you'll do the same.

Thanks Dave for reading this. If you got this far.

Horrible decision, cancelling the membership, but I do wish you guys the best. I've seen so many indy gaming sites do this and they inevitably turn to crap. And yes, they all say, "We won't turn to crap, trust us!" and they slowly do just as corporations do. The corps. bottom line is money, not being a fan of games, which is why i liked this site. You seemed to genuinely enjoy honest opinions on gaming and I cannot trust that knowing you're in bed with Gamespot of all folks. What a dumb, dumb decision.

This sounds like the last thing these guys would do... so the fact that they're really confident and feeling really good about it has me pumped too.
