PSN Still Down in Japan, As Government Asks More Questions

Unclear if Sony will be able to have PSN back up worldwide before May ends.

Reports suggest the PlayStation Store will be back online sometime this week, too.
Reports suggest the PlayStation Store will be back online sometime this week, too.

PlayStation Network slowly but surely came back online last week for most of the world. That's not true in Japan, where the Japanese government's desire for more information from Sony has kept the service from returning.

Andriasang translated an article from Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, which sheds a little more light on the issues facing Sony in its native territory. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is seeking more details on the protections in place for credit card users and how compensation would be handled if a user's credit card information was obtained to rack up illegal purchases by someone else.

Here in the US, Sony partnered with an insurance company to cover such purchases--that deal does not exist in Japan.

A key detail seems to be what, if any, credit card information was exposed. Sony eventually admitted up to 10 million credit card were "potentially" exposed but it was never confirmed if anyone was at risk.

The lack of updated information from Sony seemed to suggest the information was mostly kept safe.

Sony had previously announced PSN would return worldwide before the end of May. It's unclear if the continued correspondence between Sony and the Japanese government will change that deadline, but according to the article, Sony has stared talking to the government about its revised data policies.

@lukeytastic: Really informative comment......-_-

Japan just can't get a break. After the Earthquake and now people can't play online. Blows pretty hard but I expect Sony to dish out some good rewards from the people.

I just see this as exposure that Sony still ultimately don't really have, nor ever had, any plan regarding compensation for their Japanese userbase, if details were to be ultimately stolen and used for ends related to fraud etc.

I can understand a bit on why the Japanese government wants to delay the returning PSN but I question what information they need to see that PSN is safe again.

Sounds more like the JP government is just being dicks about the whole thing.  Who would release a product that they knew was faulty?  Microsoft.

See what I did there.

Not likely that this will effect bringing the PS Store back up in other territories, but it sucks for Japan :/
Who knows how long government investigations will take, and it's the users that have to wait...

Not just Japan, but entire Asia. If Japanese government wants to question, fine, but keep that in their own country, I say. Stop bothering us.

That sucks! I live in Japan, and I still can't get on. I would understand if they just blocked Japanese PSN accounts, but my account is an American account. But, they are blocking all Japanese IP addresses. I haven't turned on my P3 in three weeks. I am getting pretty fed up with this mess.

KIcking who's down already seems to be a tradition for 'shark people'. Bet your ass it's something like that.

Problem is those politicians are dumb. They ask questions, would they have the slightest idea what the computer experts answer them? Do these politicians even have any computer science knowledge? Do they even know any programming language? What will their decisions be based on?

Politician: So, what are you guys implementing?

Computer expert: Blah blah blah blah firewall blah blah blah...

Politician: Oh, did I heard "firewall"? Good. Continue.

Sucks for those who really wants to play online but it's also good the government cares about the changes so they know people's information will be safe.

Open an account using another country for the address and you can go use it again, if you're not bothered by restarting to lvl 1 in your games and trophies

Im in the Philippines(look for a country by your right with a lot of separated islands) and using a US Account works fine for me.

Im not angry at the Japanese, they made my ancestors suffer but I forgive them, probably a religious thing, or maybe because of what they have made, or both.
