Sony Responds to Criticisms of PlayStation Network's 'Welcome Back' Lineup

If you already own all the PS3 and PSP games on the list, you might be a little peeved.

After promising to earn back some goodwill with the community through a little thing called "free stuff," Sony yesterday detailed its "Welcome Back" plan for the return of PlayStation Network. There are some terrific games being made available at no charge, but if you already own all of them, that's a bummer.

The head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's communications division, Nick Caplin, actually responded to a fan who expressed their disappointment over this very issue on the PlayStation Blog.

"I’m really sorry tha [sic] there is nothing there that you want," explained Caplin. "We’ve tried really hard to put together a list of high quality BD [Blu-ray disc] games, rather than simply offering cheaper PSN titles. The average metacritic rating for these games is over 84%, so these are high quality games. Unfortunately with a user base of 77m people, it is really hard to offer something for everyone."

If you've already forgotten what games are in the "Welcome Back" package, I've got you covered.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't XBox Live go down for a few hours a few years ago and we got a free XBLA game for it? I think for like 3 or 4 weeks of outage and compromised information Sony should probably step it up....

I am a little bummed since I already own inFamous and LBP. But getting the zombie game and Whipeout HD for free is still pretty neat.
I am content.

Friggin' hell. Ever notice how, no matter what people get, they think the world owes them something?
I'm gonna be so happy to grab 3 of these games. Free. No friggin' charge.

I don't for the life of me, understand why people are bashing Playstation/Sony over this. I don't get it in the least.
They had a hacker. Someone who should be blamed, break in.
So in response, Sony has some downtime. To, you know, try and keep you bloody safe. To upgrade their systems to try and please you.

Aww, whaaa, you didn't get to play Black Ops for a few weeks? Go outside or read a book, if you REAAAALLY can't play single player games ever. I had a blast playing a bunch of single player titles from PS2/PS3 that I hadn't even bothered to before.
And now? They're giving everyone a free month of PS-Plus, an extra month for those who had it before.

AND free games. Free games that many people did not have. Wow, I'm actually impressed. And yet, you all whine. Spoiled friggin' brats, all of you whiners.
Bring me back to the day of sitting around, playing SNES with my buddies, any day. No online? No problem. I've got choices and so do you.

You self-entitled motherfuckers. Its a free service. Guess what PSN+, your service is extended anyway. Its hard to cater to 77 million people specifically. Appreciate the gesture, you fucks.

What an idiotic response. The problem isn't that I "don't want" these games, it's that I already have them! Justifying the choice with Metacritic is laughable. I KNOW these games are good, that's why I bought them in the first place!
They should have some other option for those who own all those games, even if it's something like another 1-2 months of PS+.

While I'm not deeply offended by the games they chose to offer up and who knows maybe I'll get some of them since I actually don't own infamous or littlebigplanet I still feel some free PsN credit would have been nicer.  Even if it were just like 50 bucks worth, I'd definitely be happier with some free dlc.
50 bucks huh? Care to repeat that? Multiple posts prior to this one demonstrated an approximate 1.5 billion+ hit on Sony from $20 credit per account. Do the math.

"Even if it were just..." Unless you happened to lose $50 or more from your bank account, what makes you feel you're entitled to money, let alone such a large sum?

No Sony, it is not hard to offer something for everyone. It is really easy in fact. Just put some money on our PSN wallet. Voilà, everyone's pleased.
A lot of people say this, but it's not a viable choice for a company who's goal is to make money.  I believe I have accumulated around 7 or so PSN accounts (one primary, another for guests, and 5 others just when I wanted to make a name change - which I still have access to).  If Sony were to offer currency of say $15, I would get $105 to spend on PSN since I can play any game that is downloaded on my PS3 regardless of what accounts I'm signed on to.

Sure, it's easy to say "Well Sony fucked up.  They should just suck it up and incur the loss.", but c'mon, lets be within the realm of reason.

Because then the hard-working people who worked on the games you bought with free money don't actually get money.

Instead, how about complainers do the logical thing and quit acting like entitled assholes when a multi-million corporation was attacked by anonymous pricks with nothing better to do, therefor preventing them from posting trophies on Facebook and shooting dudes in the face online. You're not paying for the service and if you do, they extended your service two months.

Jesus, cry more, people. They're giving free stuff and people still complain.

Sure, they may be blockbuster games that you may all have, but the fact that they're even giving you games is beyond requisite compensation. Xbox users just got Undertow; you're getting 4 very decent "retail" games in addition to a million other perks.

Some people will just never be pleased, I guess.

Why did you even bring up xbox? That situation was entirely different, live wasn't down for a month, and didn't have everybodys personal information stolen.

It is kind of lame. The only one of those games I don't own but still want is ModNation Racers, and even then I don't want the PSP version.

It feels weird to be shitting on four free games, but it seems pretty obvious that these games were specifically chosen because most people already had them. The only one that seems okay is Infamous, since the sequel is on its way, but I've already finished that game. Four times.

They could just put Uncharted 3, inFamous 2, or Resistance 3 on PSN when these games are done and make one of them the "free stuff." Then, I think everyone will be happy. At least no one has already owned them. :D

So potential loss due to CC fraud should be compensated with an actual debt being owed to their customers?  "I want money!" - Stop being stupid.  If one were truly upset by the loss of their personal information, they would be evaluating the free year of identity theft protection and whether that is a fair compensation.  It's good to demand quality service from companies, but being an idiot about it just devalues the voices of people who actually have reasonable claims.

Thanks Sony. Now, when are you planning on contacting those affected by the intrusion? You know, the customers that trusted you with their information. Or are you still "looking into" the situation?
Haven't looked into this, but they are offering a year of ID theft from a company called Debix.

No idea if a year is worthwhile though.  I have not the slightest clue about how stealing something like credit card information works, but I would guess that it would be smart to sit on that kind of information until the credit card is about to expire(so that the "heat" will die down) and then charge a shit-ton on it at the last minute.

I will be grabbing my two PSP games though—even though I don't have a PSP—in preparation for the NGP launch.
This.

Remember when XBL went out?  What did we all get?  Fuckin' Undertow, a piece of shit by anyone's estimate.  The games Sony's offering are among the finest on their respective platforms.  No doubt people would be bitching just as loudly if Sony had just put in for some cheaper titles.

I'm sorry but unless you're a PSN Plus subscriber then they don't owe you a single penny, so anyone who is complaining about the lack of choice in the FOUR free games they're letting you have needs to go away. It's a free service, an outside force hacked it, it could have happened to absolutely anyone, and it was three freakin' weeks. All they owe us is an apology, giving out free stuff is just to stop people bitching about them, and surprise surprise people are bitching about the free stuff.

To the people saying that PSN is free, it's not.  We paid for it in the higher purchase price of a PS3 v. an xbox.  Instead of paying a weekly/monthly/annual fee, we paid the present value of that fee.  In any case, it is incredibly easy to cater to 77mm people... offer the free stuff but them offer some good sales.  PSN hasn't had a good sale in ages.  XBLA weekly deals are sometimes good, sometimes meh, but it's always better than the slop PSN offers up... so quit-yer-bitchin' about quitin' bichin'

Uh, what?  I'm sorry, you meant you paid for
WIRELESS
BLU-RAY PLAYER
When X-Box was still trying to market a SEPARATE wireless adapter and HD-DVD player.

You 'payed for the difference' eh? 50 bucks a year (if you DO pay yearly, more if not) so what, 5 years... hm. Math.

The Playstation Network is already a free service since the beginning so losing probably hundreds of millions and giving out these five free games is already really a lot for them. People should be more grateful.

Hmm.. so your CC details, name, birthday, address, email etc arent important enough are they? congress and federal services would disagree with you.

Potential fraud from ths debacle is staggering.. if you looked at the bigger picture past your meager point about "gaming" maybe you would make some sense..

Sony has a lot of 1st party stuff so I don't understand why they don't have a bigger pool to choose from, especially when you are limited to just two. Luckily, I don't own some of those games so I will be okay but it definitely sucks for those people that already own all that stuff.

@Atomsk: Yeah, I'd say PS3 was definitely the better value, especially for those of us who got the original 60GB model.  Not only that, but the hardware was built more sturdily than the scotch-tape-and-glue approach that Microsoft used before they put out the S model.  Really, it's shit like this that makes me wonder why I bother with comments sections at all.  Hell, I half hope that MS is forced to pull XBL for nearly a month, if only to see what the people bitching about Sony say to justify how they're doing a better job.

Also how many gigs is all of this going to take? I don't have much space left and it's like two games.

Wow come on people seriously? The fact that they are repaying you at all is crazy!

Isn't PSN free anyway?
(For those that do pay for PSN + or whatever I think you should just get compensation for days missed , anything more sounds selfish.)
These are great games too.
If you own them already then you should have been playing them while PSN was down.
Ever heard of one-player?
Any complaints over FREE stuff doesn't even matter.

Yeah, not only that, people get an account for each region, like I have a European and Japanese account to get region exclusive demos early. I think that actual number of PSN accounts is somewhere in the 40 million area.

Or maybe all of the games offered came out in the last 2-3 years, and when you spread out the cost of all those games, isn't very much money to spend on gaming whatsoever.
