BREAKING: Is Giant Bomb's New News Editor Starting Tomorrow?

With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
I'm pleased to announce that as of Monday, seasoned newsman and all-around good guy Patrick Klepek will be joining the Giant Bomb team as News Editor. We've all thought long and hard about how best to expand our focus and provide higher-quality content for you, and adding Patrick to the team will bring exactly that. In addition to bringing his expertise to our current news output, one of the things Patrick will be focusing on is honest-to-goodness original reporting, ensuring that there are even more things on Giant Bomb that you can't find anywhere else.

Why news? Why now? Well, I should probably back up a bit.

Right around the time we started Giant Bomb back in 2008, I grabbed myself an RSS reader and subscribed to almost every single full-text gaming news RSS I could find with the idea that if we were going to start a site with no dedicated news person, I was going to need to be up on what's happening out there in the world. While we focused primarily on covering the games themselves, we'd dabble in news here and there, reporting things when they came our way and, more often than not, linking out to sites that were doing the legwork that we weren't. Beyond positioning some rugged soldiers like Brad Nicholson in direct path of the press release hose, It felt like it would be crazy to get into news. Other people--like Patrick, for example--had that buttoned up.

These days, I almost wonder if everyone decided that there's no money in news reporting or something. The sites that were fully devoted to it seem a little less focused these days. Some of them broke out and got into other types of content at their news team's expense. Others branched out into so much off-topic coverage that I had to cull them from my RSS feed. Still others straight-up vanished. Point being, I'm not getting as much news from the news sites as I used to, but the post count from these sites just seems to go higher and higher. I'm left with way too much digging to get to the important stuff from the authors that matter.

Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
So I've decided to, in my own way, do something about it. We've all known Patrick for awhile and have crazy respect for the work he's done. Everyone's pretty excited about having him here. We've been tossing around names for potential news candidates for what feels like a year now, but none of them felt quite right. Once we began talking to Patrick about coming over here, it didn't take long for all of those other names to sort of fall by the wayside. He'll be working directly out of our office and we'll all be thinking about presenting you with the most important game news out there with the level of insight and experience that you've come to expect from us.

And we'll probably manage to have a good time while we're at it. That, after all, tends to be our way.

But enough about that. What I want from you right now is two things! First, join me in welcoming Patrick to Giant Bomb. Second, I think we all have some ideas about what an ideal news organization should look like these days, but I want to know what you think about it. How do you want your news delivered? Is text the thing? Should we develop some kind of weekly news wrap-up show? Call-ins? A daily podcast where the day's headlines are delivered directly to your earholes? Should we beam our news stories into space so that aliens can know about updated release dates and the reasons behind their favorite studio's layoffs? Should we rope Patrick into some kind of heinous Tested live show segment where he's blindfolded and eating some kind of awful "food" during his first week here? Like I said, let me know.

Audio would be nice, preferably in the format jeff is doing the NDX. But text would suffice just fine too. Thanks Pat and welcome to Giant Bomb.

First off welcome Patrick to Giant Bomb. Hopefully we get to see you participating in some shenanigans with all the other guys soon.

I think articles covering the news is usually good enough. Sometimes it is nice to have video features but doing a weekly thing may not work right because not every week will you get s lot of news. A podcast would be nice but yet again sometimes the news would not be enough to warrant a separate podcast and for the most part the bombcast covers news. Maybe having Patrick for the news section to run down and give his viewpoints and keep it as accurate as possible in the bombcast would be nice.

You know, Giant Bomb was always sorely-lacking in the "awesome-but-in-a-crazy-way" hair department. Glad to see that getting addressed!

This is awesome news. About news. Pull this off, gentlemen, and you may have just reduced my "newsy" RSS feed count to 1.

Wow. I mean, nothing gives me more joy than GiantBomb (I have 3 Tshirts and all the Limited Quests), but I would have thought G4 was a better gig influence and career wise. It is smart of him to get in early, before GiantBomb is the sole power in the universe, though.

Welcome, Patrick.  Pretty awesome.

Giant Bomb is rad, but it will not be complete until more than 50% of the talent hails from #vidgames. Sorry, Petaluminati, but you're going down!

Awesome, I always liked Patrick. If Giant Bomb manages to maintain decent general coverage, it may very well become the only video game site I visit.

EDIT: Oh, right. Text articles as stories come up with a weekly audio or video wrap-up would be nice.

I would prefer text updates possibly with a weekly wrap-up video... and of course make him eat all of the "food" you can force him to

as someone who isn't on top of anything in the comic world, i think the comicvine team do a great job with their weekly wrap up video, so something like that on top of regular text reporting would be ideal.

A weekly video news wrap up or a podcast would be great as i am way too lazy to read. And definitely have him eat all kind of awful food blindfolded!

Crazy awesome!

Excited to have him aboard!
I wouldn't mind hearing him on the podcast or having something similar to the Comicvine weekly wrap up video once a week. Or like you suggested, make him do stupid things while blindfolded on the live show, that will work.

This sounds really exciting. I love Giant Bomb for the great content and the complete lack of insipid top ten lists. Adding a bonafide journalist like Klepek to the fold should be awesome. I can't wait.

Yes! Patrick Klepek is the hardest working man in video game journalism. Aside from his boyish good looks, he always seems to have the first word on any development in the industry. Plus, he seems like an all-around good guy.

As far as delivery, I'd like text articles for breaking news but i'd rather it be a once (or twice) weekly round up video.

Though having a weekly news roundup video with quick news hits might be a neat thing to have, I feel like the real value behind people like Klepek is their ability to do long-term stories like Infinity Ward v. Activision, which feels very much like feature article territory to me. And because I'd love to see more of that sort of thing (and stuff like the age-old Dallas Observer story about Ion Storm back in the day), I'd have to vote for text.

First off, as Jeff mentioned, welcome Mr.  Klepek. I feel the best way to get his news across would be the standard text postings, along with a video wrap up akin to the comic vine weekly news. Adding him to the bombcast may not be a bad idea either, maybe give him the news segment to read and have you guys discuss instead of Ryan handling everything. Just my thoughts, and again, that's what we call a get!

Used to Follow Totilo, Klepek and Tracey John in MTV Multiplayer Blog for a long long time. All have gone to other places, and luckily, its to places where I already visit, well other than Tracey, she writes for MANY PLACES :P
But Yeah, would definitely like a news roundup podcast. I've been getting almost no time to read my RSS feeds now a days, and none of the 5podcasts that I hear cover news as much as I would want. I always feel like I'm missing something. (And find out when I eventually check feeds at a later date)

News podcast please, I know video sounds good, but daily video was tried way-back-when in you-know-where by JeffG and others and it was just too much work both for the makers and for viewers. Something like a nice and funny 30m length daily podcast or a bombcast length news roundup per week would be really really good.

Looking forward to new audio feeds! I commute a lot, 1h daily and things like these are way more useful than textual feeds.

Congrats and All the best :D

A Video news report segment would be cool, or a weekly text/podcast wrap up that is a one-man or 2 man mini-show.

This is quite awesome to hear. Welcome aboard, Patrick!

As for the news style, since you have the video and audio side pretty well covered, it'd be nice if Patrick mostly stuck to really high-quality text stories. That way, you have the best of all forms of media on this site, and I have little to no reason to visit any other video game sites out there.

Patrick, welcome to GiantBomb and Whiskey Media!

Been reading you since MTV. Not sure if that is saying much but glad to have you.

Only word of advice, watch the rate of the news stories. When Nicholson and Kessler were added, there were like 5-7 posts a day and most people, including myself, didn't like it. They had to tone it down. Keep it focused on the important and occasionally the obscure stuff.

Since Whiskey is video focused, you should have your own segment on the Happy Hour. Take Q&A from the chat and callers on the week's news. The Bombcast already talks about the news on Monday/Tuesday. My guess is you'll be on there when big news breaks.

Wow, Klepek is going to be a really great addition to Giant Bomb. Congrats to all involved!

I think text is kind of a no-brainer.

A daily podcast sounds cool on paper, but what do you do when the news is slow? Or if there's no news at all? I think a weekly podcast posted on Thursday or Friday would probably be a better idea.

No opinion on whether or not you should do a video news show. Sounds cool though.

Only good things can come of beaming Giant Bomb into space.

Congrats Patrick!

I like the idea of some long-form investigative journalism. I think one 1,500+ word, thorough investigative post per week (unlike the firehose of predictable news snippets we get from every other gaming site) and one tried and true Whiskey Media video segment to wrap up the news for the week.

Been following Klepek since his 1UP days. Cool addition to the team, I think. As far as news, I think text is good, but since he's going to be working out of the office (while most of the other news editors don't, I believe) a video feature sounds like a good idea. Or a podcast. Or him just taking over the news segment of the podcast. Something. Use the man's beautiful face is what I'm saying.

And yes, torture the poor sucker with some Tested segment on his first Live show. Nothing but good can come out of hazing.

Hey Jeff, thats great news. To answer your question, I think having a daily news podcast would be incredible. I might not be in the majority here, but between going to work and college I don't have much time to scour blogs for up to date news like I used to and therefore just miss a bunch of important stuff or just end up falling behind.

I do however have a large amount of commuting time, and a podcast with news would fit perfectly into my schedule. Anyway, just my two cents and congrats to Klepek once again.

I hope you do a lot of on location or investigative reporting with Patrick.  The man has connections I'm sure but the industry has relatively few beat journalists.  Hell the real news barely has beat journalists anymore.   You guys could be a revolution!
