Tomb Raider Reboot Falls to 2013

You won't be getting your gritty, realistic Lara Croft on until early next year.

Perhaps this delay was made to ensure they got Lara's excruciating grunts of pain juuuuust right.
Perhaps this delay was made to ensure they got Lara's excruciating grunts of pain juuuuust right.

Let the mass exodus to the first quarter of 2013 begin! Well, maybe it's not as dramatic as all that, but we now have our second major title in a week's time to move from a projected fall 2012 release to early next year.

This time it's Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot, which has officially been pushed to the first quarter of 2013. The news came in a forum post on Crystal Dynamics' website from studio head Darrell Gallagher. According to Gallagher, the push was made for the usual polish and quality reasons, and in service of making the best possible product.

We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can't wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.

The E3 comment is perhaps at least some small bit of solace for those anxiously awaiting Lara Croft's latest adventure. BioShock Infinite, which enacted its 2013 exit strategy last week, won't be at any of the upcoming industry trade shows. So at the very least, Tomb Raider fans will get to see some new stuff in a few weeks at E3.

Let's just hope this trend doesn't continue on too heavily, lest we suddenly find ourselves with a whole other holiday season's worth of major games in the first three months of next year. There are still enough major games on the release bubble right now to make that a terrifying reality.

i'm fine with this. i hope this trend starts spreading game releases out more. i hate how every big title comes out in the fall. annoying for my budget.

i was probably going to skip this game, but now with a more budget friendly release window i might just get it. good on them!

Normally I'd be super pissed that the two games I was most excited about were delayed till next year. But, my Fall semester of college is going to be brutal and I'm not going to have anytime to play games anyway.

Hey all you guys who have been screaming about "every game ever" being released in 2012:

This is what happens every year! We won´t have a "crowded" fall or winter because a lot of games are going to see delays.

The most recent and original Tomb Raider title was a downloadable first released 2 years ago and that one was actually pretty good, and this one looks really great.

Somewhat interested in this, but don't mind the delay. Enuff other games still coming *very* surely this year, so one or two games hoppin' over to 2013 won't matter.

Pure curiosity, is anyone really looking forward to this? Perhaps it's because I have absolutely no history with Lara Croft outside of a demo of (I think) the last major release, but I just don't care.

Again, not trying to bash the game but... meh.

I'm super stoked. I enjoyed the Legend/Anniversary/Underworld reboot, but that formula ran out pretty quickly, especially since Uncharted came and was doing the same thing a lot better.

This is a new take that if it's polished and not super janky, can be great.

@Shaka999: I never really liked the Tomb Raider games but this have made me very curious. I'm really hoping that I will like it because I think Tomb Raider allways had potential but I have never really liked the gameplay. This seems fresh and intreresting. Very excited to see this during E3. They have yet to show the public the more open world part of the game.

So in my case it has nothing to do with me having a history with the game, but rather the other way around. This reboot is what I want to hopefully get exicted. It looks promising.

This. Properly fiending for it, and it's nowhere to be found!

But on topic, I have the same faith in this push back that I do with Bioshock. Well, maybe not completely, but I'm hoping for the best.

as much as i love polished games this might mean the game will have to compete with bioshock infinite and i don't see that as a good idea at all

Survival-horror game set on a mysterious desert island? You're damn right I'm looking forward to it, even if it's just to see how it turns out. I have no history with Tomb Raider, but that element is probably the only reason you're playing as a chick, and I could use a break from Gruffy McFrowniface the Protagonist Man for a while.

I'm sad but I completely understand and am very willing to wait. The gameplay shown at the demo looked amazing and appeared so smooth and fluid the only thing to compare it to is Uncharted 2 and 3. If this game is gonna move as beautifuly as those titles it's worth the wait.

it was probably wise of them to decide not to release a tomb raider this year, as it apparently is no longer 1996.

I've been interested in this game from the beginning with the way they've positioned it as "open world survival", but aside from that basic idea I really have no clue what the game will actually be like. Because of this, I'm very much looking forward to seeing some details come E3, but I'm also not that torn up about this delay.

Not surprised at all. Their presentation at last year's E3 looked like a cinematic with some button prompts on screen to give the impression of interactivity. They didn't have a game at that point.

To be honest, I'm not even mad about all the delays into the first quarter of next year. It means that we will yet again have another awesome year in 2013. Moreover, I would expect a lot of these delays are to give a big financial year to the consoles on their last year before new hardware hits.

*Raises hand*

I've never played a Tomb Raider game before because the entire tone of them was off-putting, but I'm quite interested in picking this one up. I'm glad both this and BioShock have been put back until next year, that gives me Christmas to clear the stack of Vita games I'll have accumulated in the Autumn so I can actually pick both of them up.
