Twisted Metal Embracing Newfound M Rating From ESRB

The live-action sequences apparently responsible for the unexpected rating.

The Twisted Metal reboot will be released on October 4 with an M rating, according to designer David Jaffe. He broke the news at Twisted Metal's Comic-Con panel, according to GameSpot.

Eat Sleep Play is reportedly retooling other aspects of the game to embrace the newfound freedom of the M-rating, which was apparently prompted by the live-action sequences telling the game's story.

Twisted Metal: Black was violent, weird and disturbingly dark, taking the B-movie cheesiness from the original games and twisting the knife. As a horror buff, I loved it. It was also the first M-rated game in the series and the worst selling game in the franchise, despite the warm embrace.

The disappointing sales prompted Jaffe to aim for T, hoping to ensnare more players.

"The stories [in the game] are twisted for sure," said Jaffe on Twitter last year. "But if BLACK= M rated, I really want a T. T=more peeps online and casting our net wider. TMBLACK was the best reviewed but WORST selling TM game ever. We think the M was a major reason for that."

One year and an ESRB rating later, Jaffe will have to face that obstacle all over again.

@The_Joker: The article said they're retooling it to EMBRACE the M rating.

Jaffe will probably just add a bunch of cussing and bizarre looking boobs.

I don't feel particularly confident about TM's chances in the marketplace. Car combat just doesn't seem to be in style right now, and I don't know if anyone outside of a dedicated audience will care at the moment. I hope it all works out for the best.

Wait, so the game has FMV in it? Is it weird that my interest in this game has spiked at learning of FMV.

Me too.  I really question how engaging this form of game play will be in today's online communities.  I think the "M" rating will hurt sales because it excludes all the kids who haven't already experienced car combat games on the previous two generations of consoles.  I'm not sure there are as many older gamers who really want to go back to that game play.  Sure, some will just as many were eager for Duke Nukem, but overall I'm not so sure.

I am surprised by the lack of hype for this game, who cares if it may or may not be relevant? Will it impact your enjoyment of the game because the genre has been pretty empty for a couple of years? Geez people have some faith! :D

This game will do a lot better than Black simply because the market for M-rated games has grown exponentially since then.  Not only are past fans getting older, but more adults are buying games as well and consoles are saturating more households.  Plus its this late into a console's life cycle whereas Black was a launch title for a system with a completely silly small number of initial shipments.

Well, knowing how outspoken Jaffe is, if this game doesn't sell we're gonna be in for a bitchfest.

I don't think so. He seems pretty realistic about this game's potential in the market. I did enjoy see him shitting on Jeff Kocksmokerly though.
