Turns out that David Jaffe is working on a Twisted Metal game. He and studio Eat Sleep Play are building something of a return to form for the long-running franchise, as revealed at Sony's E3 2010 media briefing.
Twisted Metal will feature the usual car combat and seriously bent characters such as the disgusting clown Sweet Tooth and Calypso. Inside this dark wrapper, you'll be controlling over a dozen cars armed with weapons like rocket launchers, giant magnets, and even "flying mascots." You'll also be able to change environmental layouts via destruction.

The multiplayer component sees the return of faction-based combat. Up to 16 players will be supported and a variety of unique modes have been promised. One of those modes demoed at the E3 briefing was "Nuke," an inventive take on "bomb the base" that has you holding a base long enough to fire a missile at an aerial statue.

Helicopters have been confirmed. In fact, these un-winged beasts will be crucial to another game mode dubbed Flight, which will have you pummeling characters with a copter's chaingun.
Twisted Metal is a PS3 exclusive and will see a release sometime in 2011.
