Ubisoft Will Not Release an Assassin's Creed Game in 2016

Finally, the franchise will be taking the rest that its critics have been hoping for.

"Nice." -Ezio Auditore da Firenze, 1499.

After six straight years of releasing a major entry in the Assassin's Creed series, Ubisoft has finally decided to take some time off. This year, for the first time since 2008, there will be no mainline Assassin's Creed game released in the fall.

The announcement is couched in a larger post that mentions the well received Assassin's Creed Syndicate and the in-production Assassin's Creed film, both of which could be considered successes for a franchise that seemed to be on its last legs just a few years ago. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not sure that movie is going to be good, but someone at Ubisoft better be getting a raise for getting that movie made at all.)

Then the post drops the big news:

This year, we also are stepping back and re-examining the Assassin’s Creed franchise. As a result, we’ve decided that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed game in 2016. Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity, we’ve learned a lot based on your feedback. We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise. We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.

In some ways, this decision also feels like a success. At least some fans and critics of the series have been calling for the company to take a break ever since Assassin's Creed: Revelations released in 2011, and the choir of voices making that demand has only grown in number as the series has continued to release annually (and with fluctuating quality). While I'm sure there are a billion business reasons behind this decision, I also fundamentally hope that this means that the teams working on the series will be able to revitalize it.

Though it definitely isn't my favorite series of the last console cycle, Assassin's Creed might represent those years of AAA gaming better than any other franchise. From the early aspirations and untapped potential of the first game, to the explosive set pieces and character-driven intimacy of Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood, to the early free-to-play mechanics and unfocused bloat of Assassin's Creed 3, it feels like Assassin's Creed sums up so much of what happened in gaming throughout those years.

In any case, I'm tentatively hopeful for the future of the franchise. It's needed this break for a long time. Let's just hope that Ubisoft will let its developers use this extra year to re-evaluate and improve the next entry in the series, and that it won't shift them over to work crunch on whatever big project they will release this fall.

Why would they need to take a break when the last game was a return to form for the series? I mean it was the same dull pile of mediocrity that every Ubisoft game ends up, but it reviewed well!

According to a video game sales site that people constantly deride, Syndicate sold only half as well as Unity. I think such a drastic drop (~8 million to ~4 million) probably had an influence on this decision. There are better reasons to make such a decision, but for those that only care about profits and not so much the game quality (except in a cost / benefit ratio), it would be a very likely reason.

White I do look forward to playing AC every year but hopefully this will result in a better product. I really enjoyed both Unity and Syndicate in fact I would call Syndicate my favorite game last year. Even with a new AC coming out even year they have yet to make a bad main line AC game which is kinda amazing.

They mean not one of the "main" games.

They already released another chronicles one.

Syndicate was okay, but the series as a whole has gotten off track in a big way. The main branching storyline is all over the place. What is the purpose of the Assassins anyway? They're starting to look like historic trolls whom do nothing but nag the Templars, whom are looking more misunderstood and heroic after every game, like the Helgast in the Killzone games. Then you got this Goddess who is supposed to be the ultimate villain, but the writers are doing a bad job with her character as well. They need to take a break, look over everything, and release a well focused sequel that helps everything make sense. And they need to really revamp the gameplay. The additions to Syndicate were okay, but not nearly enough. The game was starting to look more and more like GTA with horses.

Hopefully this confirms the rumors that have been leaked so far so that we can look forward to:

  • Boiling the game back to the basics of AC 1 and evolving them.
  • Bring in the sense of awe and adventure of Prince of Persia.
  • Take inspiration from The Witcher on involved side quests and characters.
  • New setting in Ancient Egypt so they can throw out all the baggage.

@humanity: I hope it's combat is closer to that of Bloodborne, and its parkour replicates - literally replicates - Dying Light. Fingers crossed.

@flemadian: why in the world would a fast paced action series like AC take on a slow and methodical, stat based combat system like Bloodbornes? I really like that game but I don't want any crossover between Souls games and Assassins Creed.

'Cause I'd rather have it feel methodical/fluid than fast and full with stutters and faulty mechanics, which every single AC game is guilty of feeling like. Not a single game has come out with solid mechanics that organically seep into creating fluid gameplay.
