Why We're Not Reviewing Battlefield 1943 Yet

A cautionary tale.

Great fun, when it works.
Great fun, when it works.
With only three maps and three player classes, you wouldn't think it would take us long to play Battlefield 1943 and deliver a full review. Under normal circumstances, you'd be right, but the two days since 1943's launch have been anything but normal.

In case you haven't heard, the online situation for EA and DICE's new downloadable shooter on Xbox Live is a bit of a mess right now. The problems seem to be mostly focused on server capacity and the inability to join games, so far. EA says it's doubled the number of servers in use since the game launched on Wednesday, but I've still spent more time looking at "unable to join game" error messages than I have actually playing. A separate issue is making it all but impossible to join games with your friends.

It's worth pointing out that, anecdotally at least, it sounds like no such problems exist with the PlayStation Network version so far. The game has quite honestly been fun as heck when it's worked right, so if you're dying to play the game this weekend and have a choice of platform, you ought to consider the PSN game. Though, since '43 is built around small squads and friend-invite options, the biggest factor in your decision should really be which console most of your friends are playing on, and for me, that's the Xbox.

DICE is running a Twitter feed with frequent updates on the team's progress stabilizing the game, and a forum post over on the game's official forums features more in-depth info about what's being fixed, as well as some interesting trivia about the troubled launch.

Server Locations

Xbox 360: Amsterdam, Miami, Fremont CA, and Tokyo. We are adding more locations as we to spread the load of players.
PS3: Amsterdam, Virginia, L.A., and Tokyo. We are adding more locations as we to spread the load of players.

Fun Facts

I need to share something fun and cheery now. And even though many can't get in, many have and played a lot of games already.
  • On Day 1 there were 29.45 years of gameplay completed on Xbox 360
  • Over 5 millions kills in the first day!

Amusingly, DICE has ratcheted up the console wars with an Xbox-versus-PlayStation race to 43 million kills. The first platform to hit that number will be the first to unlock the fourth map, Coral Sea, and a new plane-specific Air Superiority mode. The devs are just throwing fuel on the fire by posting the actual kill statistics as they rack up in what seems like real time. The Xbox is ahead by roughly 1.5 to 1, so it's actually a closer race than I thought it would be.

Way to go, DICE. You're part of the problem.
Way to go, DICE. You're part of the problem.

We'll be back early next week with a real review of the game--provided EA gets everything ironed out over the weekend and we can play without problems--but for now, here's what Battlefield 1943 might look like if you were to play it...

I have been wondering if BF1943 is something they're using to test the waters on console and see if there would be enough demand and interest in a full fledged traditional BF game (not just BF:BC) on the console.
That also crossed my mind. But to me it really seems like they're testing whether a multiplayer-only download-only shooter would be accepted universally. I'd bet we will see a digital-multiplayer only COD release for Treyarch's next game, perhaps even MW2 after it has been out a while. Those guys tend to copy the best BF traits (except vehicles so far). The lack of need to swap discs is golden.

Then again isn't MS eventually gonna allow full retail downloads, circumventing that? Oh well Acti knows more people play the MP than the SP anyway. They could sell more if they offered just the MP at a reduced price.

I don't know how replayable this game will stay. The few classes aren't what bothers me, it's the lack of unlocks. What's the point of the level grind if you don't get goodies for it? Even the achievements are super lame, so you can't turn to those. It's obvious they didn't expect this level of acceptance.

Its sad to think that, as always, the PS3 version of a game doesnt mean shit to Giantbomb.com, I bet you guys wouldnt care if that version was messed up

Its good that you guys are funny and enjoyable to listen to because otherwise I wouldnt come to this site, I know you guys arent really bias but you just dont care about the PS3 version of multiplat games

If they only reviewed the PS3 version THAT would be biased.   You PS3 fanfucks don't give a shit about fairness, you just want them to acknowledge the superiority of the PS3.   Only an irrational, idiotic fanboy could construe this as a bias.

Its a great game when EA allows us to actually play it !?!

Had some decent matches, but i have not had the "be arsed factor" to listen to the title screen music for 20 mins before finding a game, hence i have not played it for a few days.

I thought you we're supposed to review games based on what they are out of the box. If it isn't working out of the box, then it isn't working out of the box. How is that fair to the other games that had some issues, and we're given more of a negative review than they would have if they we're reviewed like a week or so afterward? That is probably just me though, so perhaps I don't know what I'm really talking about.

...regardless, I'm looking forward to the review. I really once to play this game, but I only will play it when it is actually working.

@TwoOneFive: Actually, if they're anything like my friends -- it's like a 100 to 2 ratio, 360 to PS3. Also...Warhawk ground combat blows.

Just review the PS3 version Brad. It's not often you see this kind of gracious attitude being shown to a buggy game on an alternative platform. M$ Bias anyone? Are you now taking Microsoft IOU'S? Have Japanese businessmen been smuggling some "fake" treasury bonds into the GB offices!

"

Well seeing as the 360 version is just so much more popular than the ps3 version that is the issue they cant provide enough servers to keeep up with demand

I guess this isnt a problem keeping up with demand on the ps3 version..

It is "official" that the Quick Match and server problems are fixed, according to the scrolling news bar on the main menu. I had no problems at all last night and it is quickly becoming one of my most-played mutliplayer games, at least in concentration. I am loving it and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, addictive multiplayer game for a cheap price.

I actually got to play it a little... I didn't like it a ton. So I went back and played 8 hours worth of Battlefield Bad Company instead. I did awesome yesterday. Different match scores I remember: 24 kills, 11 deaths; 21 kills, 1 death; 12 kills, 0 deaths.

I've decided to not use my M16 exclusively anymore for Assault Class. After 60 hours of using only the M16, I've realized that I have a tough time defeating people in close quarters cause it shoots slow and straight, great for fights over 50-70 feet. So I started to use the F2000 for it's speed. But realized that it ran out of ammo before killing 3 or 4 people.

So I decided to use the AN94 instead. Fast shooting, easy ques to glitch reload to, accurate as the M16, a non-distracting grenade barrel switch animation.

" I got only one question about that game. I have Warhawk on the ps3 and i never play it because, well, i suck too much. Is this basically the exact same experience but with a different setting? Because i'd like to like these games, but getting your ass kicked is not very fun after a while.... "
absolutely- and to tell you the truth. i think Warhawk is a much better game- way, way, WAY more features.
"
Agreed. I mentioned this in another thread -- Warhawk is a far superior game. Especially after the expansions. Of course, Warhawk is also a much more expensive game, so there's a bit of adjustment to make there review-wise. If you enjoy BF then it's definitely worth $15, even if you have Warhawk. If you dont' want to part with $15 or you're not a huge BF fan, then I'd just stick with Warhawk. Or if you're no good at Warhawk and don't want to play that, maybe skip them both. :) "
Thanks guys, i'll pass on this one then. I wonder is brad will make the reference to warhawk in his review for comparison purposes, they are after all, pretty similar games. "
yeah he definitely should- but than again- clearly Brad doesn't play, and probably didn't play, Warhawk at all because he's a XBL only kinda guy. i dont mean that as an insult at all, i just reread it and it came off to me like i was saying he was bias or something.  "
Well, the more time passes on, the more i realize that the whole giantbomb crew are mostly on xbox first and foremost.

How do you people not see what the problem with this is?  This is an online-only game; the server structure and online code come part and parcel with your experience and enjoyment of the game.  Can you really blame them for not wanting to have to write two different reviews?

You review only one version, it tells you nothing about the other version.

Dude this is about as off-topic as it comes.

Anyway, I've been having a blast with BF1943. I was owning so many noobs in the plane that one must have gone into nerd rage and reported my profile content, so I got suspended from xbox live for 2 days. Good stuff.

I'd give the game a 4/5. For the price of admission, it's a good romp, even with the lack of content. Two things need to be fixed - one, the server stability, and two, the squad functionality. As it is now, it's really hard to join a game with a friend because squad matchmaking isn't working right, and parties are getting split up across teams as if they were joining separately. For a CoD fan who's never played the Battlefield series, they'll have a real eye-opener playing this game, since it's essentially CoD with massive maps and vehicles. For someone like me who has played Battlefield since the '42 demo, it will bring back some nostalgia while still being a step up gameplay-wise from BFBC.

" @zander1123: A review that says "GAME BROKEN, ONE STAR" doesn't do anyone any good when it's fixed a week later. We're better off holding off and reviewing both versions at the same time and mentioning the rough launch than trying to deal with two wildly different experiences at this time. It has zero to do with one platform over another, it has everything to do with making sure our time is spent meaningfully when reviewing products so we only have to review things once, rather than write one review, then go back and edit that review to account for another platform.

If they can't fix the issue in a timely fashion, then it becomes a wildly different story. This is essentially the same thing we did when we reviewed Demigod. "
If you say you want to wait till the 360 version is ready to review it then I will hold you to that. Then you would have to wait for the PC version as well.

@Kronom: Ok but what's stopping him from getting the PS3 version and trying it in the meantime?
"It's worth pointing out that, anecdotally at least, it SOUNDS like no such problems exist with the PlayStation Network version so far."
Quoted from Brad. It SOUNDS like it's not having problems, not "We haven't had problems with it." SOUNDS means they haven't tried it.

I'm tired of GB doing this. Talking it up non stop about achievements is kind of weird in itself. Then I notice they only review the 360 version of most multiplat games. Now they refuse to get the PS3 version of a temporarily  broken 360 title.
This isn't journalism. It's fanboyism. I wish they'd just be a 360 site.

You say they can't review because they haven't tried both but how many big multiplat titles on this site have the X360 near the review? I doubt they've even tried PS3 versions of most games.

This game is more about racing your teammates for flags than actually winning from the other team. At one point my whole team stood next to the air raid shelter trying to fight over who could go next by button mashing the B button, oh yeah and then there are the planes.. aaaaaahhhrrrrrggggg!!

I wish this was on PC right now, trying to play a huge level game like this on a controllers makes me feel whatever the opposite of claustrophobic  is. I fear for my life in this game knowing that some guy with a wrench could be hiding anywhere and I can't react fast or accurate enough due to the controller.

I feel like if the 360 version were working proper the kill count contest would be a little more as expected.  However it appears the amount of people playing it on 360 is murdering their servers it is going to be an even race for a bit.

Pretty much. I thought it would get better after a couple days and the novelty of flying/air raiding died down, and people started playing the game. But nope, it certainly has not.

Also, to the guy who stole my plane as I landed on the aircraft carrier to repair it. If you're reading this, I hate you.

You don't have to land and get out to repair your plane.. You just fly over the carrier slowly, relatively close to the deck.

It SOUNDS like it's not having problems, not "We haven't had problems with it." SOUNDS means they haven't tried it.I'm tired of GB doing this. I doubt they've even tried PS3 versions of most games.I don't hate you Kronom at all, I'm just tired at the GB staff for this. "
Yeah those Xboxfanboys giving games like LBP, KZ2, And Infamous 5 star reviews! How dare they! "
But he's talking about multiplatform games. Those games you mentioned are just single platform. Which anyways I feel Kronoms pain.

Anyways, I know how this argument goes. Basically they feel comfortable playing 360 because most of their friends have the 360. And it's stupid because it's game journalism there shouldn't be a specific console to play multiplat games because that's favoritism. Then you guys will say then that's what they'll receive as their review copies (the 360 version) yada, yada, yada.

I know how it goes.

Yes  they should just stop reviewing games and close down this entire site in order to avoid offending anyone.

I know, I know. It's journalism. But this argument is gonna keep biting us in the ass. A lot of people on this site are beginning to notice that GianBomb might be playing Xbox favoritism. And I'm beginning to believe those people. Look it, we're at a time where the 360 and PS3 are the same console as far as gaming goes. But their only difference is their social aspect and how you get your movies and tv shows. So start relizing that GiantBomb. Everyone wants this game review. Don't hold out because you have more friends on Xbox Live.

You made a thread about this a week ago you are one of those people. You asked if they are being paid by Microsoft, do you even know the history behind GB's creation?

" This game is more about racing your teammates for flags than actually winning from the other team. At one point my whole team stood next to the air raid shelter trying to fight over who could go next by button mashing the B button, oh yeah and then there are the planes.. aaaaaahhhrrrrrggggg!!
"
Pretty much. I thought it would get better after a couple days and the novelty of flying/air raiding died down, and people started playing the game. But nope, it certainly has not. Also, to the guy who stole my plane as I landed on the aircraft carrier to repair it. If you're reading this, I hate you. "
my friends and i have been playing the hell out of the ps3 version. this was in an issue for like the first 12 hours and then as players really learned how to use the anti-air guns (leading the planes based on the vast distance of the maps) things evened out. the planes are incredibly weak to AA guns and the planes offer little reward to those who suck at flying them (average infantry score is 200+ points, a round in a plane averages 100+ based on skill).

as for the flag capturing you are right when it comes to the Wake Island map. Wake Island is a battlefield icon almost and it has traditionally been played with 48 to 64 players online. now we're dealing with 24, so forces get spread pretty thin here (make use of jeeps and planes to get to the action quickly). maybe you keep finding awful servers, but i'm sure things will get better for ya.

for those crying foul over the lack of the review, i see you point. i am a person who prefers a ps3 over a 360, so i am used to the ridicule and slander that is accompanied with such a preference. comes with the territory i suppose lol. so i don't care if they don't review this game soon or not because my verdict is clear, there are enough players on ps3 to keep me busy killing for a few months and we all seem to agree: this game freakin' rules (especially for 15 bucks!).
**interesting side note: the PSN is experiencing issues with the join feature, and squad features. VOIP in game to talk with squad mates gets slaughtered to hell from time to time when the servers are full and you might as well turn off your mic. this assumes you have duked your way into a match with your friends in the first place. players on ps3 seem to be taking note of BF1943's level of fun and everyone is starting to play it, thus we are going through what the 360 is experiencing. this is a recent development in the past 24 hours however.
