Wii U Arrives in United States on November 18

The date is set, prices are in ($299, $349), new games have been announced (Bayonetta 2, Black Ops 2), and the road to Wii U's launch has begun.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo of America has announced a release date for Wii U in the United States, and it's November 18. It doesn't launch in Japan until December 8, but Nintendo launched the original Wii first outside of Japan, too.

There are two sets. The basic set includes a Wii U, Game Pad, Game Pad charging cable, AC adaptor, HDMI cable, sensor bar and 8GB of memory. The "deluxe" set also includes 32GB of memory, a Game Pad charging cable, Game Pad cradle, a copy of NintendoLand, and enrollment in a premium service on Nintendo Direct, where you earn points for each purchase and can redeem them later for other purchases.

The big question? Price. It's $299 for the basic set, and $349 for the deluxe set.

As for big game announcements, Nintendo is publishing (funding?) Bayonetta 2 with Platinum Games, Monolith Soft is making a new game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is coming to the platform, and there's a new Monster Hunter. Well, "new." Monster Hunter Ultimate (Monster Hunter Tri G U in Japan) is based on the 3DS game, and the save data will be interchangeable between the two platforms. It's available at launch in Japan, and March everywhere else.

Project P-100, also from Platinum Games, was easily one of the most exciting Wii U games at E3, and that's been renamed The Wonderful 101. Spoiler: still looks awesome. Epic Mickey 2 will also be receiving a Wii U upgrade, and Activision made the clutch announcement of Skylanders Giants. Nintendo didn't discuss the NFC features baked into the Game Pad, though, so one might expect that will still have a separate device to scan the characters in.

Nintendo broke down the hilariously large "launch window" for Wii U, as well: November 18 until the end of March. Besides New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand, the company wasn't confirming release dates, but since Pikmin 3 isn't coming out until next spring in Japan, I wouldn't expect it over here this year, either.

In America, Nintendo spent the most time going over its big media initiative, Nintendo TVii. It aggregates content services--Amazon, Hulu Plus, etc.--and allows users to search, track, purchase, and play content from them on the Game Pad and the TV. There's a neat dynamic between the Game Pad and TV, too. The Game Pad takes screen captures of what's happening on TV, and allows users to comment and share on Facebook and Twitter. You also have access to your DVR through the Game Pad, though right now, that seems to mean TiVO-only devices.

Nintendo TVii launches alongside the device this year, but only in the United States and Canada.

The company also unveiled a strange interface for Nintendo TVii. Maybe it'll make more sense in our hands?

No Caption Provided

Over in Japan, there were some big announcements that should guarantee some folks on day one (like, say, 8-4). In addition to an even more deluxe package that comes with a Pro controller and a copy of Monster Hunter Ultimate, anyone who buys the premium version of the console also gains an invite to the upcoming beta for Dragon Quest X.

NO! Bayonetta 2 is Wii U exclusive? This sucks! Bayonetta was one of my favorite games of this gen and there is no way that I am getting sucked in by Nintendo's gimmick based hardware again.

Well I'm 99% sure you can play the game just like Bayonetta 1 with the Pro Controller.

@Skeetlejuice
: idk man, Halo 2 was super shitty compared to Halo 1. Also Skyward Sword wasn't glitchy, Beedle was just an asshole.

Anyway I will probably pick up the DX version around X-Mas if the games are good.

Hm. I had assumed they'd stick with the yen-to-dollar policy they've always done. Not too surprised, I guess.

This to little to late nintendo. Especially with the price point which is way more than the current gen console while not doing much better than them. In fact the memory is significantly worse meaning I'd have to buy and external one which means I am spending a lot more money on this console just to get it doing what I want.

I could kind of justify it with the wii as it was doing something really interesting but the wiiu seems to be a failure on every front to me. If the orbis or 720 don't do anything interesting I think I'll be going for a pc next gen

I just like Nintendo is including HDMI cable as the pack-in, instead of composite. Bold move by Nintendo. That's just not something I've seen most anybody else do. Most everyone else goes with composite. I mean, I understand why most go with composite as the pack-in, with composite connection being on most every TV, but still, in this day and age, when most households now have at least one HDTV, it's time. HDMI should be the pack-in. If someone really wants composite, they can be purchased on the cheap.

Bayonetta 2 sounds good but still not buying this console. The only reasons for anyone to buy are exclusives and the controller. It will be blown out of the water performance wise within a year by Orbis/Durnago so unless you really can't live without another version of Mario/Zelda or really fancy playing all the mini-game rubbish that comes with the controller I can't see any reason to get one.

Nintendo normally prove people wrong but I am struggling to see what they are seeing with the WiiU.

Hopefully, Nintendo used that decades-old philosophy of utilizing old technology and just bought up a shit ton of white 5' HDMI cables from monoprice.com for quarters on the dollar.

They don't call them "The Big N" for nothing.

$300 is a price I'd be comfortable paying, although even as someone who has never bought DLC or downloaded games 8GB does not seem like enough memory. I've filled up my 60GB PS3 easily with just demos and saves. The PS2 hard drive peripheral even had 40GB.

Anyway, even though I'm not interested in buying a new console right now, the gamepad seems neat albeit gimmicky and I like the idea of having a TV UI on it as opposed to the PS3 where I'm never precisely sure what any given button will do when I'm watching a movie.

How much will another one of those controllers cost, I wonder.

Only 1 works with each Wii U i think...

That was the case. Supposedly it handles 2 now, but the frame rate is halved since it's having to draw and stream to 2 additional screens. But I guess is possible.

Remember the 3Ds early adopters, just be wary and not to put on the "launch goggles". If you don't agree with the price, don't get it, it will send a message to Nintendo. That goes as well with Bayonetta 2, don't get Metal Gear Rising: Revengance or DmC. Your decision...

Its going to be amazing, the things you can do with the game pad and the system are endless. Two player in COD no split screen, one on the TV the other on the pad!! playing Colonial Marines and hearing those infamous bleeps and seeing those red dots getting closer on your pad. The fact that you can use the pad as an extension of the game and use it to explore and interact with the environment makes it more immersive. As for the memory, Nintendo haven't done the dirty and said that if you want to buy more memory, you need to buy one of their overpriced add-on's. You can connect any size external hard drive or flash drive, and potentially have 3TB if you wanted to, and shop around for the cheapest price. I will be pre-ordering my Zombie-U bundle today :-)

Yeah, me too. Especially with the way digital distribution has evolved over the years. 32GB really is quite pathetic. I would say it's downright foolish of Nintendo to not even match the current generation standards as available on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. And this is supposed to be next-gen?

These game announcements speak volumes more than the shitty Nintendoland crap at E3. And I'm happy they're shipping with two SKUs, so I won't be forced to get the one bundled with "Nintendo's lazy Mii tech demo 2012" (the aforementioned Nintendoland).

Knowing that Bayonetta 2 is on the way, as well as seeing LEGO City Undercover some more (don't laugh - LEGO Batman 2 was super awesome and LEGO City looks even better. I'm stoked that TT is finally adding some depth, or at least changing up, the platforming and combat), and some other interesting games - like confirming Monster Hunter Ultimate will ship worldwide next year -; the console is looking better now definitely. Why couldn't Nintendo have mentioned ANY of this stuff at E3? I mean, shit. What's the point of stuff like Skylanders Giants and Epic Mickey 2 even showing up on Wii anymore? You just wanted to screw those franchises over a bit, Nintendo? Make us wait until THE NEXT entry in those series for true HD installments? Ugh. So badly handled.

Still, my Wii broke, and I want to play Last Story dammit (why didn't I pay for faster shipping!?!). I'm probably going to get one of these things soon after launch. At least I won't be ashamed to do it... I hope.

Oh and Nintendo, you REALLY want to convince me that you're after quality games from other developers? Partner up with Sega and Platinum further, and produce a Vanquish 2 and a Valkyria Chronicles 4 (really, it should be 2. No one gives a fuck about the PSP ones). Oh man - could you imagine how a tactical game like Valkyria Chronicles would use the tablet controller? Jesus. I'd love you forever, Nintendo. I would stop bashing you on the internet for a year, for each, cross my heart.

Sorry, but I really don't feel like shelling out extra money for external storage, when adequate storage should be standard. (At least with the high end version.) An external HDD will just take more physical space in my already crowded console space, add to the cost, and be an ever-present visual reminder of their poor design choice.

Besides, they're just pulling a Dreamcast here, with this early release, and will be surpassed by the other guys a year later. I love Nintendo, and great as their games are, I'm tired of playing Mario and Zelda generation after generation. I want more new IPs.

I'm sorry but I don't get the Wii U. I just don't. I haven't seen any games that excite me. I think that a second controller is going to be prohibitively expensive and the Wii traded heavily on its low price. I think including a HDMI cable only is great for hardcore gamers but what about all the people who played their Wii on an SD tv? There has got to be a large portion of those people out there who will get the Wii U home and then won't be able to hook it up. Perhaps it will still function will the the Wii's old composite cable but who knows? Nintendo TVii looks cool I guess but I don't have a Tivo and I wouldn't get one just for the Wii U. The systems power is MAYBE a step up from the PS3/360 but in a year the graphics of the Wii U will look out dated. But really, it's about the games and I just don't see any for me. I'm sure Nintendo will put out its 10 or so games I would play over the life of the system that I am interested in but that's not going to cut for me anymore. Sadly, this may be the first Nintendo console I skip.

Define "adequate." All hard drives run out of space sooner or later, whether they be 32GB, 80GB, or more. I'd rather buy a console with a relatively small hard drive and the ability to easily add capacity with external USB drives than pay more for a larger hard drive that will inevitably have to be swapped out of the hardware after a time-consuming copy processes.

Adding to that, why is everyone freaking out about the space anyway? The Wii U has a faster disc drive than current systems, so far it looks like you won't even need storage for disc based games. Unless you wanna go all-digital (so far only first party retail games will be day-and-date available on the eShop), those 8 or 32GB of flash memory seem totally fine.

And if that really isn't enough, throw in another 32GB USB stick or SD card and they will take up virtually no space at all. Don't let yourself be fooled by 320GB hard drives in your PS3/360. Unless you never uninstall old games or download a ton of huge games and leave them on there forever, you don't need that much space anyway.

Yep, but their HDDs are ridiculously overpriced. Plus, 16-32GB is enough if you plan to play physical retail games with a few digital games on the side. Yes, the 360 and PS3 are the same price with 250 to 300GB of storage, but are you forgetting that not only is the Wii U more powerful but that the controller is going is be quite pricey due to that screen? If you look at the Wii U 6-7 years from now, it would probably at a $150 price point with 32 gigs which is a better value than what the 360 and PS3 goes for today.

The Wii U being more powerful than the 360 and PS3 would have been a selling point in 2005. It is not a selling point that the Wii U is more powerful than 6 & 7 year old machines. (that are cheaper, have more games, and more storage)

and so far the Wii U hasn't showed any graphical prowess over the current consoles, but, ahem.

360 HDDs are overpriced, but PS3 allows you to plug in any 2.5" internal HDD. With that in mind, externals are more expensive, sizable ones require their own power source, AND that's another device producing heat you need to have sitting next to your system. If none of that bothers you, keep in mind a USB connection is far slower than a SATA connection, so storing DLC or full games on a USB device will be a lot less desirable than you make it sound. If Nintendo doesn't give us enough space to hold game updates and DLC for our Mass Effects 3s and Black Ops 2s, they'll be back to getting lite versions, which they should be trying harder to avoid.

I know I'm gonna get one of these eventually, it being a Nintendo console and all, but I really think Nintendo is buring out the last of the good will me and my family have for it.

I think most people would then have to buy an extra HDD and dedicate it to the system, adding to the total cost. 360's and PS3's for that price come with 250-500 GB.

Most people probably won't even fill up the hard drive on the 8 GB model.

8-32GB really? I'm speechless...

Yeah, me too. Especially with the way digital distribution has evolved over the years. 32GB really is quite pathetic. I would say it's downright foolish of Nintendo to not even match the current generation standards as available on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. And this is supposed to be next-gen?

You can connect an external HDD to store your digital games and whatever else through USB.

I have an eternal terabyte drive hooked up to my computer right now. It physically doesn't take up that much space, doesn't require external power, the heat output is negligible, and from what I recall, didn't cost that much, relative to other drives on the market. I would assume that if I were to get the same model of external drive for a Wii U, it would work just fine.

Preordered a Deluxe version; can't wait! Not once in the past has a Nintendo console let me down at full price.

(I didn't get a Virtual Boy.)

Replacing a HD on the ps3 is really easy and super cheap, you can get 500 GB for 50 -70 bucks. Microsoft still over priced like always and Nintendo gives you the option of an external one, not bad. Hopefully the next gen consoles have this option and no more overpriced HD's.

Sure why not? This seems reasonably priced and I am willing to give Nintendo a shot , the $350 option seems like the way better deal.

I have to ask, why do you believe this is a reasonable price? Not to get into a "spec war" but the WiiU isn't exactly a powerhouse that can blow away the competition.

If it were going to "blow away the competition", it'd be $400 or more. And besides, it doesn't have to. I can buy multiple systems. If this is going to do its own thing, and SMART developers can find a good way of balancing the controller functions into the gameplay experience, that's fine on its own. I'd rather have SOMEONE doing something different than have three clones next gen...

One game isn't a reason to buy a console, especially with Microsoft and Sony unveiling their stuff only a few months after the "launch window".

...So... just wait until two more consoles are released with 'zero' interesting games for THEIR launch? Because if memory serves, the 360 and PS3 had fucking GARBAGE at the start. I'd say Nintendo having atleast 'acouple' pretty interesting games at launch on their system is better than most.

So at 25 pages long i didn't read every post so i ask, if the basic bundle is $299 and i heard that if you want a second screen controller that will cost you $170, does that mean they are able to build the console box for $129? Is nintendo even able to make money off of what is just in the box with out buying any other extras?

I know nintendo fans will buy this console but nothing about the wii u seems like a good deal or a good investment at this time. Because people who actually play their wii over a 360 or ps3 are they really a group waiting for games like cod, darksiders, bayonetta, mass effect 3? Plus it doesn't play dvd's or blu rays.

I understand the mario and monster hunter games are things that fans will want to play but is it worth it to fans of those games to spend anywhere from $299-$350 for a new console with out buying any other extra controllers.

Controllers are (so far) only planned to be sold in Japan, where the price for one converts to $170. I think they've only said that they will sell controllers in US/EU once there are games out that supports it. If you break or loose your controller, Nintendo customer service can provide you with a new one, for an unknown amount of money. And keep in mind that (so far at least) every game played with a second controller, both controllers will have their framerate halved, since they're sharing the video feed.

@Cincaid: ahh, i only heard the controller price not the that it won't be out day one. But even at that their price points it doesn't seem to me at least there is a lot of profit margin.

"where's the games" ... err have you seen the list of games? there's a whole big bunch of 'em coming in the first 4 months (stuff that comes later hasn't been shown yet).
