You Can Transfer Your 360 Skyrim Characters to PC

A vast world of improved texture detail awaits you.

After playing Skyrim for several dozen feverish hours in the course of the review process, I figured it must be the mark of a truly special game that I immediately wanted to sink in several dozen more hours as soon as I had the time. It's just that good.

No Caption Provided

But the release-day discovery of the low-quality texture bug on the Xbox 360--the first version we got in for review, and the one I spent the bulk of my time with--gave me a good reason to hold off. One of these games only comes along every few years; might as well ensure it looks as good as it can while I see everything (else) it has to offer for the first time. I wasn't about to abandon my level-30 character to restart on another platform, so I grudgingly decided to wait for the issue to be corrected, which may still be as much as two weeks away from happening.

In a strange twist of fate, it seems like I might not have to wait after all, now that users over on Reddit have posted a set of easy steps to extract your save file from the 360 version of Skyrim and bring it directly into the PC version. I verified that the process only took about five minutes before I was up and running with my old Imperial mace-and-shield fighter from my original playthrough, except this time with a mouse and keyboard instead of a controller.

While the need to change platforms is probably rare, the PC version looks and runs dramatically better than its console counterparts, and of course features the much-ballyooed support for mods that's already yielded a Skyrim Street View feature, among other novelties. Due to those distinct advantages, some players might find themselves ready to try the PC version in a few weeks or months, maybe after the inevitable Steam sale.

The Xbox 360 is such a closed platform that the very idea this even works is sort of magical to me. Granted, the necessary tools can certainly be put to a more questionable purpose than this one, but like hardware mod chips before them, this seems like the rare situation where console modification lets you do something that's unique and ethically sound at the same time.

If you've heard about a way to do something similar with the PS3 version as well, I'm sure some readers would appreciate it if you posted your info in the comments.

I've been moving my main character from my xbox to my modded pc game and back several times. Loading times on the xbox are so long now...got close to finishing the Dawnguard expansion and the game simply stopped working. The auriel's bow quest have you talk to a guy - enemies attack and the roof is supposed to come down on you. I keep reloading and triggering this quest. I've had the roof almost crush me, the last enemy in the pack frozen while the others keep attacking him, the guy on the throne just sits there...whenever I reload I'll have a different experience. I'm going to have to get the expansion on steam and try to continue on the pc.

I just got done doing this. Went to a friends house and took my PC save with me. Hung out over there and played my character while drinking beer and such, came back home and picked up where i left off. It really is magical.

Do anyone here see it as a possibility to move and change the PS3 save to PC and make it into an .ess file? I remember reading about WillowTree which could change and transfer PS3 and xbox360 Borderlands save data to PC, so the process is at least possible.

I have the PS3 version of the game and I am 70 hours in with good gear. I really wouldn't want to restart but I want to move my save (if it's possible) to my new high end PC. So, for someone who has the game, would you mind trying to open my save on your your PC version of the game?

This will let you see the files on the usb. And go into wndows and let windows show hidden files.

Thanks man, I ended up doing this and it worked. I brought my character over to the PC, edited the way he looked and brought it back over to the 360. When i brought it back over to the 360 the third person camera perspective was off. It was much more pulled back than what the default camera distance is on the 360. Just a weird thing that I noticed when I did this. Anyone else notice anything like this?

So apparently somebody on Yahoo! Answers posted a solution for doing this trick with the PS3. Here's what they said:

"Copy the save to your PS3 Formatted USB Drive. Open with Modio. Click open from device locate the save file and open it. Click the file contents tab. Extract savegame.dat rename to savegame.ess and put it into your Skyrim save game locatio"

Anybody know if this is legit?

Has anyone actually gotten this to work? I transferred my profile and save game over to USB, but when I try to open it with Modio it tells me it can't find my profile. Anyone else have this issue?

@Mailman: Do you use steam? People have to re-install all the time because of some .dll error or not all the files were installed.

Point being, I am the one who is actually looking at the game while you go to a website with screenshots. My textures are not that shitty, not by a long shot.

"potential for downloads to screw up" makes no sense, downloads don't just "screw up" on Steam. I've yet to see a single *good* texture used in the game so far.

@Godlyawesomeguy: yeah, but thankfuly i'm not like u and i'm not drooling over some over-hyped game with a awful inventory system and boring combat. sure it might be pretty and bethseda is a good company but i would be patient enough to just wait too play it on my PC so i can mod out the design flaws. when those guys figure out how dumb encumberrance is and take it out of there games i might start buying them for console again but until then forgit it.

The save file would load usually on the resume game option. Load up your save and then save again to give you a proper save file for pc. But i got my lvl 30 biotic and lvl 30 tech on pc and running perfectly now it took a while to figure out though.

@Hot_in_rhinos: And the sensor is a worthwhile investment.

Normally, I would stick with mouse and keyboard (as I did with the Fallouts) but honestly, the controller provides accurate enough targeting for when you need to use a bow or spells, and the analog movement stick makes sneaking a lot more convenient. The downside is that by default, there are only two hotkeys but there are already mods that fix that little issue.

Playing on PC with an XBox360 controller. I was afraid that mouse and keyboard would not be the best control scheme.

Already had a few minor annoyances with the game:

  • when you create a character you will still need a keyboard to write the name
  • anywhere else in the game the keyboard is unresponsive, meaning that using a controller completely overwrites a secondary input device
  • you can write special characters when creating a character (such as ó, á, etc) but when the game displays the name again it doesn't recognise these special characters, why allow writing them if it isn't going to be able to show them? :/

PC is usually the way to go when given the option and if you have the hardware to support it. Sometimes though, i really just want a controller in my hand. I really need to get one of those Xbox Controller sensors for my computer.

Yeah, I'd recommend it. There's only going to be more and more vital mods from here on out.

I am looking forward to such inevitable additions as Jump when Sprinting, Work Bench exists at the Skyforge, and Fully Left-Handed characters. Okay, that last one might be a bit of a stretch, sadly.

There are some pretty dumb rough edges as the result of it being a near-zero effort port, of course. It doesn't seem to support ordinary pc gamepads other than the 360 pad. And there's interface bugs where it clearly gets into 'controller mode' in your inventory. But in PC land you can just relax and know the modders will clean everything up eventually.

Yea go with the PC if you can.... by the way the main quest is actually fun in this game. Much better than Oblivion's closing gates one after another. This main quest takes you through cool dungeons that have fun puzzles, nifty traps, and worthy loot!

I wouldn't exactly quantify having the textures being a hair better than usual to be a good reason to "hold off"on the game. It's damn good either way, and if you want it to be even better then start with the PC

Just started playing on PS3 and really starting to get into it although a little dissappointed in the frame rate? Maybe it's my HDMI cable, but it seems a bit hitchy compared with other RPGs?

@eezo: Sometimes I use the achievements as another mini quest system or as a purpose for exploring/doing certain things in games. i.e. getting the 100% in Red Dead Redemption...gave me an option to find other ways to enjoy the game more.

@Trylks: One huge advantage of the PC version other than the better performance, load times, and mods is the ability to quick save.

I"m playing with a 360 controller on PC and it works great. I even mapped left on the D-pad to quicksave using motion2joy.

OK, some of you may not like this, but, is it possible to use a receiver for the 360 controller on PC (I know those exist) and play on PC with the same layout and in general without differences WRT control when compared with the 360 version?

Well yes, or just plug a wired controller in directly to a USB port. Don't know why you'd bother trying to get a wireless one to work.

There's a wireless dongle for PCs that Microsoft sells. It allows you to connect any wireless 360 device to your computer. Controllers, Rock Band equipment, wireless headsets, etc. Trying to get it to work? It's exactly as difficult as connecting a wired one but with the benefits of wireless. Wired is fine if you're sitting in a chair in front of your computer, but if you've got a computer hooked up to a TV or want to use that other stuff I mentioned, wireless is the way to go.

I use a wireless dongle that I picked off of Amazon.co.uk. This dongle is connected to my pc via usb and my normal Wireless 360 controller works on it like a charm. Skyrim works fine with it, but I still prefer mouse n keyboard for it myself.

I already have two of those for the XBox, may get another one (with the new pad), and I think one receiver can work simultaneously with several, also the receiver costs one half or one third the price of a controller.

But the point is that it works fine with this game and most games, I guess everything multiplatform can be used exactly in the same way in PC as in consoles, that's the way it should be and that's great.

Thank you.
