Zoe Quinn's Top 10 Games of 2013

Alternately known as Zoe Quinn's Top 10 URLs of 2013.

No Caption Provided

Zoe Quinn is the creator of Depression Quest, which is currently working its way through Steam Greenlight. Zoe is @ZoeQuinnzel on Twitter.

Since starting to make games, I’ve sadly become a really bad nerd. I’ve been more and more pressed for time and haven’t been able to sit down and marathon the 60+ hour long games that I fell in love with as a kid. This isn’t as unfortunate as it sounds though--some of the best stuff coming out of independent gaming right now are short games that do something interesting, make their point, and let you get on with your life. Best of all, they tend to be free or donationware, though do consider supporting the developers if you like the free content they put out there. There’s a wealth of really amazing free games circulating around the internet, begging to be shared and loved.

Most of these run in-browser. Most of them are delightfully strange. All of them are free, so you might as well take an afternoon and blitz through these. I couldn’t possibly rank them, and there’s many more that I wish I could feature--I’ll likely submit this article and slap my forehead in an "OH GEEZ I FORGOT THAT!?" moment immediately after. However, this will have to suffice--hopefully even just one of these leads you down a rabbit hole of interesting little gamelings and their creators, much in the way you can lose a night by clicking through related articles on Wikipedia.

Bubsy 3D

I’ve started and erased my intro to this game about 5 times, and I think that in and of itself is a really good description of Bubsy 3D. A lot of what makes this game interesting is how it surprises you, so go and behold how Bubsy’s grown up. Make sure you enter the Cheat Codes upon completion for extra fun.

Cry$tal Warrior Ke$ha

This game has it all and knows it. Best played outloud in a group of friends so that you can collectively feel like badasses as you shout out MANTIS VICTORY SCREAM together.

Candy Box

Candy Box starts out wonderfully minimalist and continues to surprise you as it evolves and shapes itself into something completely different. It’s possible to totally miss the game in it if you discount it on first blush. One of the nicest parts about it is how you can let it run in the background and come back to it at will.

A Dark Room

This looks really similar to Candy Box but takes it in a completely different direction. It’s also got some of the most compelling writing I’ve seen in a game this year, and I fell into it instantly and didn’t want to come back out.

Save the Date

Save The Date takes an interesting turn from dating simulator to… well, I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise. Give it a few playthroughs. Save The Date is like that one really observant friend you have that surprises you by noticing things you weren’t even paying attention to yourself. It’s also an interesting examination into how and why we tell stories.

No Caption Provided

Sounddodger

Sounddodger is… well, for lack of eloquence it’s fucking beautiful. This game is a fresh take on music games, and the music selection is diverse and manages to avoid resorting to ONLY dubstep and jpop like so many games of it’s genre.

Desert Hike EX

This one holds a special, horribly biased place in my heart as a game that pokes fun at Burning Man and Silicon Valley startup culture while being an entertaining and difficult Oregon Trail-like.

Sacrilege

Sexuality is often portrayed unrealistically in all media, and games are scarcely an exception. Sacrilege unflinchingly examines parts and perspectives of sexuality I haven’t seen well-represented in games, while making it relatable, human, and most importantly honest.

Pause Ahead

Pause Ahead is a platformer wrapped around a clever mechanic and should be a very good pick for fans of the genre with a twist. See if you can figure out what that twist is.

Room of 1000 Snakes

Finishing up with another amazing game from Arcane Kids, you are an adventurer who must learn the mystery of snakes. Make sure you play this one with sound, and stop by the gift shop after.

I'm not trying to be a dick but why do we get lists from people most of us haven't heard about before?

Wasn't Zoe mentioned in the latest Worth Reading?

Yes There was also an article about Depression Quest earlier this year.

Plus, if you don't know who Zoe Quinn is, you obviously aren't paying enough attention to the independent gaming scene. Just because you haven't heard of her, doesn't mean she hasn't made some huge contributions to gaming this year.

I don't know her. I know she's been mentioned in GameSpot's The Point and on Patrick's articles, but that's about it. And I don't really care all that much about the indie scene, except for the good ones like Brothers, Papers,Please, Limbo, Mark of the Ninja and stuff like that. But those super-obscure-as-fuck indie games? Not for me.

Anyways, I'm a bit disappointed that she didn't name

one

title that is not indie. It creates a disconnect with her. As if she didn't care for today's games in general.

So let me try to get this straight. You choose which games are worth your time by budget? By publisher? Or do you just need someone in the press to tell you about a game before you'll try it? Just curious. Just going by the list of games you said you like, it sounds like you do like indie games but don't want to admit it for some reason. Wouldn't want to be seen as a hipster, better not give anything obscure the time of day.

Seems like a cool list and really digging her hair.

Also I never understood how comments bother people, yeah they were probably really shitty and low class for the ones deleted but I guess I'm the type that just keeps scrolling and moves on.

Can't wait to try some of these. Man, I frequent a lot of indie YouTubers and your list puts me and my indie game knowledge to shame.

Zoe you are the first and only person I've ever followed on Twitter from a retweet back in the day when I used to Twit. Loved your pictures. There's a reasonable chance you may be the greatest.

I can't believe Giant Bomb would let someone write a list of free games from this year that I haven't heard of. Don't you know the whole point of a GOTY list is to hear someone say that Bioshock was good?

e: Seriously though, great list, I'm a big fan of Zoe. Save The Date was a super cool game, and if you enjoyed 999 or The Stanley Parable you should check it out.

@slightlytriangularrectangle: Insinuating that someone's list is solely featured on the site because the author is a "nerd" or a woman is outright incorrect and frankly insulting. If you'd like to question this list's inclusion on the site, feel free to take it up with the staff via twitter, but further discussion along the lines of your previous (non-constructive and snide) statement will indeed be deleted, and continued posting of them will lead to you taking some time off.

You misunderstand my previous post. I was not in the least bit suggesting that the author's list was featured on the site because of gender or status.

I was, however, certainly arguing that the list/article was problematic, as its introductory premise--that of the author being a "bad nerd"--soured everything that followed.

Look at the article's two introductory sentences: "Since starting to make games, I’ve sadly become a really bad nerd. I’ve been more and more pressed for time and haven’t been able to sit down and marathon the 60+ hour long games that I fell in love with as a kid."

The aforementioned two sentences would have been better written as, "Since starting to make games, I've been more and more pressed for time and haven’t been able to sit down and marathon the 60+ hour long games that I fell in love with as a kid."

Note the meaningful difference. Not only is the rewritten passage more concise, it also leaves out the pretentious "nerd" label. Awareness of the audience to which you are writing is essential to effective communication. I cannot speak for others who frequent this site, but I know that I enjoy GiantBomb because of its stance against labels often imposed on people who play video games. GiantBomb, to me, at its best, seems a community that comes together over the shared enjoyment of video games--not as "nerds." As such I cannot view an article, any article, that begins with such a flawed statement as worthwhile.

You may disagree with me, you may very well wish to give me "time off," but I will not silence myself as the quality of content featured upon GiantBomb is tarnished by the inclusion of haphazardly written, fundamentally flawed articles.

@slightlytriangularrectangle: Fair enough, that's a better explanation of where you were coming from than your original statement about how you stopped reading at the word "nerd." I can only hazard a guess that the author disagrees with your notion of the word "nerd" being pretentious or limiting, though; it's certainly been something (along with "geek") that has been reclaimed by any number of people who don't share your negative opinions of it. (Geek & Sundry, Angry Video Game Nerd, etc.) I personally don't think an author claiming to be a nerd or a geek discounts anything that they have to say. You obviously disagree, strongly, and you have the right to feel that way.

Regardless, I really doubt that Giant Bomb will ever edit such self-descriptions out of anything a third party contributes to the site.

You're reaching dude. She's saying 'she didn't play as many big games this year' nothing more. Jeff would probably straight up call you a nerd for spending paragraphs on this nonsense.

I think there's a really good chance that you're the one that doesn't actually care for video games if a list not having any AAA titles makes you think that

Cosigned. Games like these are testing grounds for ideas that rarely make it into the AAA games that need to appeal to as many people as possible just to break even. There's cool shit to be seen, if you're willing to see it. I'm 100% not disconnected from Zoe because she didn't mention TLOU or BioShock or whatever you want to cheerlead for GOTY. That is just crazy.

For that matter, I would bet money that if she had included an AAA game in her list people would be saying it was inconsistent and accusing her of faking an interest in that particular title just to gain approval. It's lose-lose, unless she should just totally lie to get people off her ass.

Anyway, whatever, this list was great. Zoe is great. I finally finished Bubsy 3D, now I want Applebees.

I love this list because it gives a window into the reality at just how big our hobby is, and just how many different types of games are out there to enjoy

Gaming isn't just about AAA releases, nor is it about the highly marketed Indie titles that are the big thing this year. It is about interactive experiences that makes you think, inspires you, and entertains you.

Shame the comments section had to get ugly over a simple GOTY list, anyways thanks for the list Zoe. :)

Great games are games you love. Doesn't really matter who you are or what they are, there aren't really any invalid opinions. Just relax and move on if one list ain't your thing.

Thanks Zoe, it was a great list. Pay no mind to the gamers.txt junk in the comments. Giant Bomb ain't usually like this, honest. Also, thanks Rorie. And thanks to Patrick as well, just to mess with the usual suspects.
