Zoe Quinn's Top 10 Games of 2013

Alternately known as Zoe Quinn's Top 10 URLs of 2013.

No Caption Provided

Zoe Quinn is the creator of Depression Quest, which is currently working its way through Steam Greenlight. Zoe is @ZoeQuinnzel on Twitter.

Since starting to make games, I’ve sadly become a really bad nerd. I’ve been more and more pressed for time and haven’t been able to sit down and marathon the 60+ hour long games that I fell in love with as a kid. This isn’t as unfortunate as it sounds though--some of the best stuff coming out of independent gaming right now are short games that do something interesting, make their point, and let you get on with your life. Best of all, they tend to be free or donationware, though do consider supporting the developers if you like the free content they put out there. There’s a wealth of really amazing free games circulating around the internet, begging to be shared and loved.

Most of these run in-browser. Most of them are delightfully strange. All of them are free, so you might as well take an afternoon and blitz through these. I couldn’t possibly rank them, and there’s many more that I wish I could feature--I’ll likely submit this article and slap my forehead in an "OH GEEZ I FORGOT THAT!?" moment immediately after. However, this will have to suffice--hopefully even just one of these leads you down a rabbit hole of interesting little gamelings and their creators, much in the way you can lose a night by clicking through related articles on Wikipedia.

No Caption Provided

Bubsy 3D

I’ve started and erased my intro to this game about 5 times, and I think that in and of itself is a really good description of Bubsy 3D. A lot of what makes this game interesting is how it surprises you, so go and behold how Bubsy’s grown up. Make sure you enter the Cheat Codes upon completion for extra fun.

Cry$tal Warrior Ke$ha

This game has it all and knows it. Best played outloud in a group of friends so that you can collectively feel like badasses as you shout out MANTIS VICTORY SCREAM together.

Candy Box

Candy Box starts out wonderfully minimalist and continues to surprise you as it evolves and shapes itself into something completely different. It’s possible to totally miss the game in it if you discount it on first blush. One of the nicest parts about it is how you can let it run in the background and come back to it at will.

A Dark Room

This looks really similar to Candy Box but takes it in a completely different direction. It’s also got some of the most compelling writing I’ve seen in a game this year, and I fell into it instantly and didn’t want to come back out.

Save the Date

Save The Date takes an interesting turn from dating simulator to… well, I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise. Give it a few playthroughs. Save The Date is like that one really observant friend you have that surprises you by noticing things you weren’t even paying attention to yourself. It’s also an interesting examination into how and why we tell stories.

No Caption Provided

Sounddodger

Sounddodger is… well, for lack of eloquence it’s fucking beautiful. This game is a fresh take on music games, and the music selection is diverse and manages to avoid resorting to ONLY dubstep and jpop like so many games of it’s genre.

Desert Hike EX

This one holds a special, horribly biased place in my heart as a game that pokes fun at Burning Man and Silicon Valley startup culture while being an entertaining and difficult Oregon Trail-like.

Sacrilege

Sexuality is often portrayed unrealistically in all media, and games are scarcely an exception. Sacrilege unflinchingly examines parts and perspectives of sexuality I haven’t seen well-represented in games, while making it relatable, human, and most importantly honest.

Pause Ahead

Pause Ahead is a platformer wrapped around a clever mechanic and should be a very good pick for fans of the genre with a twist. See if you can figure out what that twist is.

Room of 1000 Snakes

Finishing up with another amazing game from Arcane Kids, you are an adventurer who must learn the mystery of snakes. Make sure you play this one with sound, and stop by the gift shop after.

While it does mean a higher workload, I secretly love how features like this bring out the inner douchebag of some people.

@slightlytriangularrectangle: Insinuating that someone's list is solely featured on the site because the author is a "nerd" or a woman is outright incorrect and frankly insulting. If you'd like to question this list's inclusion on the site, feel free to take it up with the staff via twitter, but further discussion along the lines of your previous (non-constructive and snide) statement will indeed be deleted, and continued posting of them will lead to you taking some time off.

You misunderstand my previous post. I was not in the least bit suggesting that the author's list was featured on the site because of gender or status.

I was, however, certainly arguing that the list/article was problematic, as its introductory premise--that of the author being a "bad nerd"--soured everything that followed.

Look at the article's two introductory sentences: "Since starting to make games, I’ve sadly become a really bad nerd. I’ve been more and more pressed for time and haven’t been able to sit down and marathon the 60+ hour long games that I fell in love with as a kid."

The aforementioned two sentences would have been better written as, "Since starting to make games, I've been more and more pressed for time and haven’t been able to sit down and marathon the 60+ hour long games that I fell in love with as a kid."

Note the meaningful difference. Not only is the rewritten passage more concise, it also leaves out the pretentious "nerd" label. Awareness of the audience to which you are writing is essential to effective communication. I cannot speak for others who frequent this site, but I know that I enjoy GiantBomb because of its stance against labels often imposed on people who play video games. GiantBomb, to me, at its best, seems a community that comes together over the shared enjoyment of video games--not as "nerds." As such I cannot view an article, any article, that begins with such a flawed statement as worthwhile.

You may disagree with me, you may very well wish to give me "time off," but I will not silence myself as the quality of content featured upon GiantBomb is tarnished by the inclusion of haphazardly written, fundamentally flawed articles.

You must be super annoyed with Brad Muir's list, he has the same game twice. To a stickler of form such as yourself it must drive you crazy. I look forward to your extensive comment detailing your problem with what he wrote.

These GOTY lists are always interesting to read. It's kinda cool to see different perspectives from all different facets of the industry.

Nice list. The only one I'd heard of was Candy Box, but after checking out Bubsy 3D I'll definitely have to check out the other games on this list.

Well that was better than I was expecting. Browser games can be rad and aren't covered nearly enough.

I liked Pause Ahead a lot, but I decided not to finish the last (?) part. The concept of that section was cool and it would have been very fun for about half the time they expect you to do it. Still, I highly recommend playing that one, they found a gimmick that's actually unique.

Not sure what I enjoyed the most, that Ke$ha game or the mods playing whack-a-mole with shitty posters. Either way, this is my favorite GOTY list today.

I feel like I missed something with Bubsy 3D. Like, I kind of get it, but not to the level that people have talked it up so I must have just missed something, like going into the water in Frog Fractions or something where the game just breaks you.

Interesting list. Definitely what I love about Giant Bomb's staff and guest top 10s is the wide variety of games that get mentioned.

Cry$tal Warrior Ke$ha was definitely up there as one of my favorite Twine games of the year. There was another, I forget the name, where you plan out this grand demonic summoning by collecting a bunch of regents lying around your house and then it gets crazy from there. I really wish I could remember the name of it.

Are people being jerks? How surprising.

Anyway, some of these might seem like a stretch for best games of the year to me but they're definitely novel if nothing else.

I think I might be the only person who got creeped out by Candy Box. I felt like I had stumbled onto a strange, dark corner of the internet when things kept popping up on the screen. The game almost felt haunted for some reason.

Save the Date was amazing. It's like Groundhog Day and The Stanley Parable, except it comments less on game design and more on the nature of stories and endings.

Thanks for the list!

Interesting list. I do want to give these a try for sure.

I would be interested to know if she ever gets a chance to play quote-unquote "real" video games and they just didn't make her top ten (which is totally fine) or if these are some of the only games she got time to play at all due to their shorter nature.

Still, glad to see her getting more exposure. I think she's great.

There is much, much more to contributing to video games and game development than releasing a game. A quick example was her push a few weeks ago to build and organize a substantial support network for new and upcoming developers. It's a fairly simple gesture from the outside looking in, but for budding game developer such as myself, these sort of resources are simply invaluable and incredibly rare.

And did anything happen from that? I'm organizing a "push" to have all developers pay me to play their games for free. Now I'm a contributor too!

Well, there was enough response from both sides that they had to redesign it. As for games or whatever, that's a little premature, don't you think? It takes more than a few weeks to see something from new and upcoming developers.

I really don't understand the hate on the idea. More developers = more games for us! More new and fresh ideas in the industry!

@crembaw: From her writing, I'd guess she didn't have time to devote to them. She might not have had the money, either; my GOTY list only has two AAA titles on it because I often couldn't afford to spare $60.

Should somebody's GOTY list be invalidated because they couldn't afford AAA titles?

Awesome great list full of stuff I would have never discovered otherwise. It's the best kind of Top 10 list!

I really don't understand the hate its getting. I mean, why? What's the point. Leaving mean-spirited or angry comments about something like this...that's just DUMB in all the ways imaginable. And the fact that this list is getting so much more shit than any other "alternative" or indie-centric Top 10 list GB has had in the past really makes i even more obvious that this culture is a disgusting mass of idiot sexist manboy assfarts who should be lined up and kicked in the balls.

Weirdly enough I came in near the beginning when the comments were all positive and near the end when some course correction was able to occur. So from where I'm looking people have reacted rather well all things considered *gulp*.

On a side note, I think it's interesting to see someone so fresh out of a situation I actually don't hear too much of (QA Lead --> Makes Own Game) because I assume it leads to a lot of broken spirits and it's likely unmentioned by a lot of people who did go through that process and became successful. Basically what I'm saying is I don't envy anyone who went the route that practically everyone is yelling at you to avoid and managed to make something of yourself.

That and cats I guess.

It's just a list people, relax. No one forcing your eyes open to read it, a la Clockwork Orange.

It's probably not the best GOTY list (because it's unordered and everyone likes a winner), but it kind of works as a ten things you could choose to check out because they're free and accessible with a click.

Still pretty hipster, but in a good way.

Okay, this was by far the most interesting Top 10 so far. Thanks for all of that obscure game goodness! Well, the 5 or so games I haven't played yet, at least. Though I'm not gonna knock Bubsy 3D or Save the Date. They definitely deserve being on this list.

Now here's a list with a lot of food for thought. I think I know about a little more than half of those games and have played even fewer than that. Very interesting.

This is also the best picture for a list so far. I have to ask though: did the cat influence the list's composition dramatically?

Can't say I've heard of any of these games. I've only checked out Sounddodger so far - basically a bullet hell "dodger" where music creates the bullets. Seems interesting, so I'm saving the list for later. A bit wary of Bubsy 3D though. The original (Bubsy 3D) was a terrible mess of a video game.
