On April 14, 2009, shortly after Sacred 2
went gold, Ascaron filed for insolvency protection with the German government. Their press release cited "extended development delay" for Sacred 2 as the cause, and stated that this would be used as a way to improve the company and look for a possible buyer. Support for Sacred 2, including multiplayer, would not be affected.
Ascaraon official closed its doors in summer 2009, selling many of its assets to Kalypso Media
. A handful of developers stayed on to complete the last of the Sacred 2: Ice And Blood
expansion for German PC users.
