The Viking era, most definetly! Splitting some skulls, drinking some mead, kicking it with Harald Hårfagre.
Assassin's Creed
The Assassin's Creed franchise follows the never-ending, secret war between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order, in various historical settings, told from the perspective of the modern day.
What setting do you think they should go with next?
Prehistoric. You have to stalk other dinosaurs as a Velociraptor in a white hood with a hidden talon.
- Feudal Japan
- The French Revolution
- Imperial Russia
- Victorian England
- Ancient Egypt
- Roman Empire
Just kill off Desmond. One thing that is dragging the series down. Then the possibilities are endless.
Without Desmond they could pretty much do any country in any given historical time. Whether it's Republic of South Africa, China, Slovenia, Cuba, Sweden, you name it. I'm not a Historian, so I only listed a few settings that I've been wondering about since Assassin's Creed II, but I'm sure there are many more that would work perfectly. Fucking Desmond.
I want to see an even split 50% Desmond in Future Manhattan or something, and 50% set in the crazy past future.
Ancient Egypt or feudal Japan are my favourite ideas so far.
I definitely don't want to see anything modern day/future. The Desmond stuff is painfully boring, and I wouldn't care if it was dropped from the series entirely (yeah, I'm looking forward to Liberation).
You're talking about the sixth game in a series here. How many franchises are improving at that point without a complete reboot (not just a setting change) ? It's time to wrap it up, and the only way to do that is to make the Desmond game. Hell, if you ask me the setting change in AC3 probably won't save the franchise either. It'll still sell, but it's pretty safe to say that it's gonna be on a steady decline from now on.
I doubt they would go back in time, so that leaves them with like the 2 world wars... I wouldn't mind WW1
They should end it with 3 because it will already be the end of 2012 and Desmond saved us from end times.
I don't think it would make sense for them to go back in time. So far every subsequent game has moved forward in history. So the next one if there is one after three, will have to be in a time past the 19th century.
While I do want Desmond's arc to end with Assassin's Creed 3 I do not mind more AC games in the future. Stuff I want to see in no particular order:
- The Norman conquest of England (Brits are the bad guys again, lol)
- The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
- The Russian Revolution (kind of related to the point above but they have already made comic books about it)
There are a bunch of interesting assassinations to look up on the wikipedia article for assassination....I'm sure Ubisoft can pull something from it.
Nothing against you OP, but I hate when people say "what say you?" or "pray tell", I don't know the right word for it, maybe it seems a little pretentious, though it's often not. Anyways, I'd hope it's not set in WWII. You'd imagine they just keep coming closer to present time, but maybe they could go even further back in time. That's not to say that's what I hope they do, but I'm not sure. Maybe we're going to go into the future, 'cause someone is actually in the animus and Desmond is the ancestor of the actual person in the animus; know what I mean? Has anyone thought of that? That's the twist right there.
Everyone is saying feudal Japan, I guess it's their inner otaku speaking.
I personally rather see 19th century China. Cities were densely populated, buzzing with movement and the architecture was beautiful. Japan is overplayed.
I want something more unfamiliar and with a LOT of people to actually stealth instead of just knife and run as I did in previous games.
Well the series has progressively moved forward in time, so I really can't imagine anything other than modern day with Desmond as the protagonist. Unless they set it during one of the World Wars, which could be interesting, but I'd prefer my original choice.

How about the American Civil War or Mexican Revolution?
The American Civil War is what ACIII is covering already.
Mexican Revolution sounds awesome.
Latin America in general would be pretty cool and if they can do one in modern day Africa (Lagos, Nigeria comes to mind) it would blow my mind. Those two continental masses never get much attention in video game land except for 'Merika Mawreens shooting up militia and trying to avoid three different models of non-descript civilians in the "jungle" or slums.
I think it should be in the near future, and a shrink ray is used to make the newest assassin tiny enough to go on a whacky adventure inside a human body! Think of all the jokes!!
I think they should just find a satisfying conclusion for it at the end of Assassin's Creed III. That would be nice. But they won't, because it makes Ubisoft way too much money.
So they'll keep making them for years to come, until the quality of the series eventually declines into mediocrity and people stop buying it, and Ubisoft quietly takes a break from making the series for several years.

Even though you said I was pretentious, that is a pretty good twist.
@Gerhabio: No, AC3 is covering the American Revolutionary War. American Civil War (1861–1865), American Revolutionary War (1775–1783).
@NTM: Fair enough. Seems like an odd thing to bring up if it didn't actually bother you.
Anyway, I still think there is more to be said in the AC franchise, though Desmond's story is starting to run a bit thin. Clearly feudal Japan isn't happening, but something in Asia would be cool. Northern Europe also; France in the 1620s (Louis XIII, Cardinal Richelieu and all that), England during the Norman Conquest, the Dutch Republic in the 17th century, etc...
I'm going to second 'space', but in a less joking way.
I just...I want Prey 2. I wanted Prey 2.
Dammit. Space assassinations. Maybe 1313 will scratch my eternal itch. Anyway, I hope the series just ends after 3. It's gone on long enough. When I booted up the tower defense minigame in Revelations the first time, that was the moment I realized that "this needs to end".
It's either going to be another AC :Brotherhood type game but for AC3 main character. That or Desmond finally.
@Shimmy: totally agree. it would bee kinda cool to see the series go to other places, but they did add a little of rome in brotherhood. but im oly sayin.
