An asteroid field consists of a seemingly endless amount of rocks and other debris floating in interstellar space.  
Over the course of centuries, asteroids may form a continuous belt around the gravity well of a star or planet.  Over the course of millenia, asteroids may coalesce with enough mass to form a planetoid.
