    Although graphically simple, with Xs and Os representing the players on each team, Atari's early sports simulation offers an advanced level of computer AI, with both defensive and offensive lines offering realistic (for the time) AI maneuvers. The game was released in 1979 as a 2-player table-top machine.

    Football is sometimes misunderstood to be the first arcade game to use a trackball, but the designer of Football, Dave Stubben, clarified that their use of the trackball was in fact inspired by an earlier Japanese soccer football game by Taito.
