I just lost all my progress, because this game saves constantly. I guess I shut down my box while it was saving. Sucks, but I wasn't that far in the game anyway.

Yeah, but free roaming worlds don't usually do that. I guess this game just caught me by surprise, because you only have one save.

Fallout 3 does that.  And F3 is about as free roaming as you can get.

Does Fallout 3 save randomly, or just when you go through doors like Oblivion?

When you go through doors and waiting (I think).

If you press start and then back out of the pause screen the game will save no matter what. Just do that before you turn off, no matter what.

Godzilla_Sushi nailed it. I actually just figured that out earlier today after I almost turned off my console while the game was being saved.

There's an icon. It tells you on the top of the screen when the game is saving. It seems to do it every couple minutes or every time you collect or beat something. But still, sometimes it seems to pop up out of nowhere, so be careful and listen to Godzilla_Sushi's advice.
