Hello and Welcome *demon voice* Mortal!

Barony, a first person 3D dungeon crawler greets its victims with an fiendish level of difficulty which will kill you over...and over..and over.. again. Dont worry, at the very least these monsters arent prejudiced as everthing can and will kill you *freakin rats man*... Enter a cubed looking, world where you start by choosing your brave hero from the fearless warrior to the insane clown to get through every floor of this masochistic dungeon. Fight enemies, find chests, appraise items, learn spells, consume food and drinks, equip weapons, staffs, armour, read books,is that a minotaur??!! Despite a minimal visual style Barony with its somber piano, the classic text box, scary voice over, and ambient sounds, like the subtle scrathing, and even the extremely distinct sound of nearby enemies, all of this in a clausterphobic labrinyth.Despite the limited visuals Barony manages to convey a terrifying aethstetic that leaves your palms sweating no matter how good you think you're doing. Which is By far the highlight of this game, every second is terror filled as you creep or speed past the winding corridors hoping that deadly skeleton didnt see you. And when you die, you lose everything. everything? EVERYTHING! The core gameplay destroys an otherwise amazaing game. Every encounter is a fight to the death, typically, there is no gauranteed win. Just a few hits, dead. Didnt see the hole in the ceiling, big ass rock just smooshed you. Dead. Took too long on the floor, here comes that fast invulnerable minotaur. Dead. You can equip one weapon that you swing and charge up for more damage, and/or equip a second utility item like a shield or torch. On that note lighting system is alot deeper than it comes off though upon intial arrival, little lighting can actually hide you from enimieses however of course you cant see them either, take a torch and light your way but beware, everyone can see you. As good as the themeing gets there is a fundemental problem with the gameplay. what does this game even want to be? Half the game is a slow calculated dungeon crawler promoting careful gameply and smart decisions and the other half is die in a single fight to a rat, getting instagibed by satan for sticking around too long. There is so many frustrating unpredictable insta kills in this game making your past decisions feel worthless. There is so much to explore, for example: there are tons of books and items that were interesting but difficult to actually see due to dying so incredibly fast. Now the game is a self proclaimed "rogue like" meaning an intense level of difficulty but its a bit overboard, even on the easiest difficulty class death still looms around every single corner. Its really is too bad because the theme and world building is so well done. 6 Spookies outta 10.
