Bastion
Bastion
Where do I begin? I have heard of this game so many times and never really thought much of it. I saw the screenshots and the talk, but it just never grabbed me. Then I heard the Giant Bombcast talking to one of the Super Giant Games team members and I got curious. Well, I am so glad that I did.
This game combined so much of what I loved of classic RPG's like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and other similar titles. The graphics and art were beautiful and lovingly created. The controls were easy to learn and highly customizable. All together it made the play experience smooth and fun to play.
Now, this out the unique traits of this title. I had heard about the narrator describing events, but I did not appreciate what the developers accomplished fully until I played the game. The noir-esque story telling and word choice added a distinct flavor to the story that hooked me from the beginning. The story is laid out slowly allowing the player to slowly learn the complexities of the world without spoon feeding each detail of the world to them. As the story took shape, I never felt the often tiring complexities that are associated with other RPG' s weighing me down.
One of the other things that stood out about this game was the music. The unique "frontier trip hop" as the music's creator coined it, was fantastic by itself. The three tracks that featured singing had me replaying the songs for a week on youtube. I began searching the internet for other work Ashley Barrett and Darren Korb.
Ultimately, I feel Bastion surpassed my wildest ambitions for a game which is priced at $15. I appreciate the succinct and tight storytelling, but at the same time I would gladly pick up anything Super Giant Game makes in the future. I can only hope I will enjoy their Sophomore project Transistor as much.
If you, like me, have waited to play Bastion but still have interest, buy it. Now. You will not regret it.
