Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, originally announced as Battlefield: Modern Combat, is a modern-military first-person shooter developed by DICE and published by EA for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in North America on October 24, 2005, with a European release on November 18, 2005.

The first game in the Battlefield franchise to be released on consoles, Modern Combat includes a single-player campaign and both online and LAN console multiplayer for up to 24 players, with two game modes (Capture The Flag and Conquest), 16 maps to choose from, and a dedicated clan system (similar to Halo 2). Although it is seen as the series' first spin-off, it is not a port of the earlier PC game Battlefield 2 (despite the similar name). It later received a successor in 2008, known as Battlefield: Bad Company.

The game focuses on multiple fictional worldwide conflicts between either the United States Marine Corps (USMC) or the European Union (EU) and either the People's Liberation Army (PLA) or the fictitious Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC). The single-player campaign focuses on a fictional war in Kazakhstan between NATO and China, switching between both sides in the conflict (while witnessing both sides' propaganda, which can be deceptive).

The game later received an enhanced port for the Xbox 360 on April 11, 2006, featuring graphical improvements and improved Xbox LIVE functionality. The Xbox 360 version was later released digitally on November 3, 2009., and the online multiplayer component of all versions was later shut down on 2014.

    Multiplayer

The game's multiplayer component is similar to the series' earlier games, albeit with a smaller player count (of up to 24 players) and only two game modes:

    • Conquest, which is the series' main game mode and focuses on capturing and defending Control Points throughout the entire battlefield, with each side having a limited amount of reinforcement tickets that deplete both on respawn and over time if they have less Control Points in possession than the opposing side. Several of the game's maps have both teams starting with one permanent Control Point, while several others have one team controlling all but one Control Point (with none of theirs being permanent, leading them to defeat if all are captured by the opposing team). Some maps have no permanent Control Points at all.
    • Capture the Flag, which are more infantry-oriented combat that often takes place on smaller sections of the game's maps. Grab the enemy flag and bring it to the allied base while defending the allied flag.

    Maps

The base multiplayer game includes 13 maps, all of which support both game modes (although CTF mode often takes place in a smaller section of the map):

    • Backstab
    • Bridge Too Far
    • Cold Front
    • Dammage
    • Deadly Pass
    • Harbor Edge
    • Honor
    • Little Big Eye
    • Missile Crisis
    • Russian Border

    • Frost Bite
    • Full Frontal
    • Hidden
