You're a little late to the party. It's been known for a couple of days that EA has said BF3 won't be on Steam. Check the BF3 forums.

I don't care (Origin is a pretty good service, and I'll be getting a boxed copy to stare at it on my shelf when I want), but they almost certainly will lose some sales over that.

I think people making such a fuss over this either haven't played Battlefield 2 or haven't been playing PC games for very long.

Also, I think there's alreday a thread about this, but meh.

Origin = Early beta access (48 hours) and, if you were in the alpha, a free game.

Boxed = No waiting for download. Which is why I'm getting it. Also, discs.

Exactly the same, I think with the issues with digital distributors and EA atm, a boxed copy is a safe bet. Plus I get to the sniff the case after I take the plastic off. What more could you want?

They'll get more money on Origin. They can control DLC easier on Origin. It means anyone who wants BF3 get Origin. It's all about Origin and not about steam.

Same deal here. It's also cheaper with the boxed copy, but I intend on doing the install through Origin as well. Actually goes faster for me to download then going through the DVD. Though that can be blamed on my crappy DVD-ROM. Oh well! :P

Also. The discussion is already active here and have been for a couple of days now.

I have to think that they're losing a lot of sales by not putting it on Steam. Will the money they're making that Valve isn't taking a cut of be enough to cover the loss of sales for not making the game available on Steam? I guess that's what they do market research and hire number crunchers for.

Whine all you want. They're still going to make a ton of money off of this. I'm sure that enough Steam users will still buy Battlefield 3 that EA will make more money than they would have made if they put the game on Steam.

I'd wager that even the people supposedly boycotting EA, Origin or anything of the like who wanted this game originally will still end up buying it.

Bad news. I'm going to be playing the crap out of that multiplayer, and ALL my online buddies use steam.

I know that I'll just add them on whatever friends list they may have going on, but I not going to like going between to platforms all the fucking time.

I don't really mind Origin, the way I see it, it's just a download service since you don't need to have it running while playing the game.
And really the only time I buy games online is when there's a sale or its something that's not available in stores.

It's a poor decision by EA to do this, but I don't think it'll affect their sales too much. If a gamer really wants to play BF3, they'll go download it from anywhere they can. Or, they can get a boxed copy.

Because having done it millions of times before, adding non-Steam games still sucks because it means that I'm still having to seek out patches and DLC and other content for the game instead of it all just being there and Steam telling me when it's available. It being on Steam has more to do with just keeping all your games in one place, you know.

No odds really. Might make a difference to EA for the games sales in the immediate launch though. However the game is on every other distribution platform so its not like anyone is limited in buying it. EA has a valid reason not to put the game on Steam and its their game to do with as they like. I can't blame them for trying to push Origin at the same time either.

This probably would have been a bit of an impulse buy for me on steam.  This fall is packed with games I want, I won't miss BF3.  There's something to be said for having a friends list pop up when I turn on my PC showing 3-4 of my friends playing a game.  They're competing for my gaming dollar against a LOT of potentially good upcoming games, seems like a risky move.
