Battlefield 3 is DICE's third numerical installment in the Battlefield franchise. It features a single player and co-operative campaign, as well as an extensive multiplayer component.
Pretty sure there has been no word whether the current appearance variations are final or the only ones yet.
If anything, I'd be more interested to see a female variation of the kits instead, but that's just too far out to be ok.
Not that I really give a toss. I'm just going to shoot nameless soldiers in the head, and I won't have the time to take notice of their race or gender.

@Tennmuerti: Well there are almost always people of every nation but of different color. Even though such might be rare, it's often there. But I have never seen a african-russian man.
There's no black guy this time around for any of the kits. A serious omission that must be addressed ASAP.
It has been confirmed that we'll have much more customization options. Expect at least the depth of Battlefield Play4Free. You'll be able to roll black and caucasian and asian at the very least. Some hairstyles and facial hair options. Dicks are mandatory though. No Sniper Wulf - I'm sorry. There's also gonna be lots of visual customization within the confines of keeping kits and armies looking somewhat uniform.
Customization yes. Titties? No go.
At least that's what they've hinted at in the past. Don't know how much of it will be in the final release.

Early in the development process, it's been said on dev twitter and BF blog. Don't know how much of that intention will make into the final game.
There's already SPECTACT-type preorder bonus deals (similar to the DLC skins/colorvariations for BF:BC 2) announced and there's sure to be more visual tweaks available than just that. That much is known.
How much more sophisticated is 'visual customization' gonna be? I don't know.

I really doubt there will be any sort of customization for anything other than outfits, like the specact package
