Got this from a list of some features at PlanetBattlefield:

Before we were allowed to play Battlefield 3, DICE's Lars Gustafsson, BF3 Lead Multiplayer Designer briefed a small group of us about the game. We'll have our impressions of the game later!

    • Tank footage show at EA press conference is possibly the first mission in the game
    • New suppression system -
    • Operation Metro - rush gamemode, close combat, play as U.S. Marines, take on Russian forces in heart of Paris, infantry focus
    • Operation Metro objective is to take back Stock Exchange
    • Team Deatchmatch, Conquest, Rush gamemodes confirmed
    • Battle Log - hub for social Battlefield experience
    • 4 classes tuned for teamplay - Assault (medic abilities), Engineer (anti-vehicle, repair), Support (give ammo, suppressive fire), Recon (main focus supplying intel)
    • Heavily focused on unlocks, more than any Battlefield game, customization key
    • Engineer has flashlight under-slung on weapon for lighting up area, blinding enemy
    • Every weapon has 3 customization slots (barrels, etc)
    • Support solider has bi-pod - placed on any surface in game (more accuracy)
    • New feature called Suppression - all the bullets you fire at an enemy affect them regardless if you hit them or not. All the bullets you fire that get close enough will start to reduce their combat efficiency. Squad can then flank the enemy and you will receive a Suppression score.
    • Jets, boats, tanks, helicopters confirmed
    • LAV-25 Light Armored Vehicle confirmed, also in Operation Metro
    • Dog tags - fully customizable, dynamically updated, only obtainable from knife kills in the back
    • Knifing system more dramatic, spectacular
I wonder in what way nearby bullets affect your gameplay. Maybe reduce your accuracy? All speculative at this point. Although those who played the game today at E3 would have a better idea. What do you guys think this feature is all about and how will it affect the overall multiplayer experience?

That sounds quite awesome, and finally giving the real benefit of being a support class using full auto fire.

Though the Engineer's flashlight sounds even more awesome, and it blinding people. Screw flash bangs! Take my flashlight!

It is kind of hard to notice details when all we had were over-the-shoulder camera views of the screens.

Good to see the class setup is exactly like BF2142. Best class system in a BF game. The suppression system sounds cool and so does getting blinded by a flashlight. Since your fighting Russians I would be funny if the plot of this was tied to Bad Company 2 but probably not likely.

@blacklabeldomm: That info says you will be fighting Russians in Paris, as well as fighting in Iran from the other video. So its just a run through of a list of Americas enemies as usual.

I'm not sure how I feel about the flashlight thing. Will it only work in dark areas? It'd be stupid if you got blinded by a flashlight in an already lit area.

Watching them land combined with having the cover around you get all torn up, Bad Company 2 made the battle feel real, effectswise.

That sounds amazing, it'll really help the feeling of being on the ... battlefield.
Also great you get points for it - points for everything! I hope you get smoke assists if they're tracking this kind of thing too. Like, an objective armed under your smoke +some points.

Sounds cool. I am all for things in a game that make the player more aware that he is being engaged and the feeling of that life being valuable. I think what would maybe be better is more real bullet effects. Real penetration physics depending on armor and such (not just more effective health level or hp). Things like bullet in the arm screws up your aim, leg shot makes you have to crawl or slows you down.  They did this with Operation Flashpoint games in the past but I think now it could be handled better. Imagine a squad mate getting hit in a leg and you having to drag them to cover to patch them up. Remove the health regen in cover or modify it a little more. Wounds if bad enough can bleed out and all that or can only be patched up so much.  Would be cool to have that element of realism. Pretty sure that would make players who use tactics, teamwork and critical thinking that much better than some of these guys who just try to cheese it up. You know the ones in the objective based MP mode just trying to rack up a kill point.

@MiniPato: Maybe the lighting will change the distance of how far you need to be to blind someone. I mean if i stick a flashlight in my face during the day it still messes me up.

The supression system sounds cool but it sucks that there are only 4 classes.

At least they went back to the support class having the ammo restoring capabilities.

Fuck yeah. There hasn't been a game I can remember that has a suppression system aside from ArmA II, which I don't think was even built in (there was a separate mod for it).

What they've done with medic and support is fantastic, I think thats a really smart move that makes assault more useful while the suppression makes the support class more useful and I'm assuming they're making the LMGs less accurate to accomadate. This sounds fantastic. That can add some significant depth to teamwork and strategy if implemented right, and I have no doubt DICE know how to balance it.

I imagine LMG's will be quite accurate when mounted on a bipod.  When not mounted, they'll probably be less accurate than other assault weapons.

@TotalEklypse: You might want to look into Red Orchestra 2. Not sure if it totally fits what you're looking for but judging from the original Red Orchestra it will probably be the best/one of the best games walking the line in terms of enhanced realism while keeping the tempo up.

Very cool news that this is being implemented in BF3. In BFBC2, "keeping heads down" with a squad automatic weapon more or less gave every enemy sniper something to shoot while giving little to no tangible benefits to balance the risk.

This is a great idea, I hope it works out. Light and Mounted Heavy Machine guns are devastating weapons in real life but in FPS they are often useless as sitting in one position firing them leaves you terribly exposed and a quick accurate shot from a sniper/assault rifle will silence you even if theyre in your firing line.

Ballistics spam is fun. Opposed to explosives spam, which is to be avoided at all cost. Nothing quite like sprinting from cover to cover under heavy fire. Especially when the cover's destructible.

Just hope they'll increase TTK (time to kill) on infantry somewhat, seemed too low in yesterday's live-stream footage.

    Knifing system more dramatic, spectacular

If it's anything like Halo's assassinations/Killzone's melee, it'll rock. The spectacle of melee attacks is part of the key to the triumph of finally knifing the bastard sniper who's been giving you such a hard time.

The worry is it becomes like AVP's melee system, which was spectacular, but badly paced and ruined the game, or COD's ninja melee skills, where everyone can knife across the map in a flash.

I do hope the knife is a tad quicker than BC2 though, because it really felt kind of awkward knifing at points.

I am so psyched for this game, it's unsanitary. I played over a hundred hours of BFBC2. And I still go back to it today. If there was an award for the "Perfect Multiplayer Game" BF would take it. Anytime, any day, any year.

I think it's bullshit that so far, only the engineer gets cool flashlights. I mean, what the fuck, using it has inherent disadvantages too, like showing everyone looking remotely in your direction exactly where you are, why is it limited to engineer only? Also, every time they show a gameplay clip where someone aims down a sight while shooting the m4, I want to kill myself because the ACOG looks so fucking shaky.

This edit will also create new pages on Giant Bomb for:
