VIP Map Pack 7: This is Heavy Metal

Wide Open Spaces - Vehicle Galore

Welcome to the second post in our series on the upcoming VIP Map Pack 7. Today, we revisit the single player map Heavy Metal -- now turned into one of the largest multiplayer maps for Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

For VIP Map Pack 7, we always knew we wanted the classics Oasis and Harvest Day. But we also know that our players love huge battlefields with plenty of vehicles. So we went back to the singleplayer campaign in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 to see what we could take from there and transform into new multiplayer maps. We wanted a level that could incorporate both vehicle warfare and close quarters battle. We found that in Heavy Metal.

Heavy Metal features both attack and transport helicopters.
Heavy Metal features both attack and transport helicopters.

The multiplayer game mode of choice on this remastered version of Heavy Metal is Conquest, with the classic three flag setup. The three flags are spread over the entire terrain. This seemed like a crazy idea at first -- this map is even bigger than Atacama Desert -- but we stuck to it, and it turned out to provide a real sense of epic scale.

There are plenty of vehicles here, and they will spawn on captured bases, so players will not feel stranded if they decide to move to another base. If an enemy chopper happens to stop by for a rocket-filled visit, anti air guns are provided in strategic locations to keep the air battles balanced and the home bases safe.

Warning: Travelling by foot on Heavy Metal can feel a bit daunting.

We hope you enjoy this immense battlefield when VIP Map Pack 7 goes live. Be sure to check back regularly for the very latest information on everything Battlefield. Next Wednesday, we take an in-depth look at Cold War, the third map in VIP Map Pack 7.

Correction: This Monday, we reported the multiplayer modes for all maps in VIP Map Pack 7. For Heavy Metal, the correct modes are Conquest and Squad Deathmatch.

Good golly! By the sound of it, Heavy Metal is gonna be right down my alley. Wide open maps with lots of room for tactical Tank Warfare. Attack and Transport choppers. Vehicle spawns at each capture point. Shapes up to be my favorite Conquest map of BF:BC 2.

I've expected DICE to transform Heavy Metal into a multiplayer map eversince I've first layed eyes on it. Now they went ahead and did it!

    Fuck yeah!

I'm a bit nervous because I'm not a big fan or Atacama Desert, but I'm excited to see new maps.

Wow, between this and Vietnam there will be plenty of Bad Company 2 to play. I don't suppose we have any idea when this is gonna drop?

Guess who's fault that is? Chopper whoring lame-players who prefer to baserape instead of playing a proper game...

Since the choppers seem to spawn at the capture points, that won't be a problem, since choppers are the main motivator for lame-play baseraping on Atacama Desert... at least that's how I read the content of this blog post.

Let's not forget Oasis and Harvest Day either, which most of know and love from BF:BC 1. They are a known quantity and their quality is beyond anything we've gotten out of BF:BC 2 so far.

Man, maybe we will use Blackhawks to actually transport people to different flags!

    That would be a first!

My main concern is balance, if an opposing team steals both attack helis, that could be bad.

I also hope that transport helis aren't ripped apart instantly, as then no one would use them.

I believe the choppers won't be at the no-cap homebases, but rather spawning in the field. Probably both at the 'middle' capture point. I think there's gonna be 2 choppers overall and not 4. Could be wrong though.

Sounds awesome but it will just be played by level 50 helicopter idiots dominating the map so along with other conquest maps containing attack helis this might  be a no go for me

While I hate cheap chopper pilots (circlestrafing spawnkillers and baserapists) and vehicle thieves (the ones who go straight to the enemy chopper spawn on Atacama Desert CQ and Port Valdez CQ), I'm a quite beastly pilot myself and there's nothing quite like owning the skies. Favorite map for flying is Port Valdez Rush. Instead of circlestrafing actually using the chopper for defense is the most awesome thing ever.

I am really looking forward to Oasis with the attack chopper being an attacker assets from maptier 1. Nothing quite like keeping that thing in the air laying down waste to the opposition all the way through to the final maptier. Seldomly achieved but a feeling to behold.

    @Seppli:
Yea I only ever start doing it if people are clearly chopper whoring.
Usually some 2 clan mates with most of their career kills from a heli, who you never see on foot.

Just before MoH came out I was mostly running around as recon with a USAS, music pumping just going CQC all the way. (was tired of my other play styles)
Had some of my best moments like that, nothing quite like like tossing a frag into a room, then running in gunning down a couple of people and knifing what is left.
Cool thing about PC version is I found a server once with a 1000 point limit Conquest map going, those things go on for a while :)

PS: I still have not bothered learning how to fly a heli in BC2 even being lvl 45 heh, PC heli controls suck ass without a joystick
