Extraterrestrials appear in many video games in a variety of styles. Sometimes they're evil, sometimes they're benevolent, and sometimes they're very similar to humans.
Any being that is humanoid in appearance, with amphibian-like features. This covers frogs, toads, salamanders and newts (caecilians look too much like worms).
Games that have animals (except humans) as the main character. The character must be playable.
Anthropomorphism is the concept of an object, concept or character that has human qualities or traits, such as speech, a level of intelligence similar or higher than a human's and self consciousness. "Anthro" means "of human" and related to the concept of humanity.
Levels that progress forward by themselves at a fixed rate.
Belt scrolling is a 2D perspective, side-scrolling action with downward camera angle. The character is able to move not only sideways, but also vertically within a limited area, giving pseudo-3D depth. Mostly used by beat 'em up brawlers, this term is mainly used in Japan and comes from the conveyor belt like viewpoint.
Necessary to sustain life in organic creatures, the crimson fluid known as blood tends to make appearances when the body's structure is compromised in some way, a very, very common occurrence in videogames.
A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
In video games, breaking the fourth wall occurs when a game becomes aware of its nature as a game, or when a character directly acknowledges the player.
Cartoon physics refers to games which do not conform to regular physics, but the "laws" are for a humorous bent rather than conforming to reality. Sometimes it ignores physical laws, like gravity, or tweaks them, like not being totally blown away by dynamite.
The continue is a classic gaming concept, and usually arises when the player "dies" or fails in the game. Usually some loss is tied to a continue, in a form of a "life" or something of other value.
Some games just won't settle for laughs. Some games make you want to cringe as you're busting a gut.
Decapitation is the removal of the head of a person or animal.
The severing of limbs is a good way for designers to make every battle a bloodier, gorier mess. Or sillier in the right situations.
Ahh, eating... We can't live without it, and, apparently, neither can some characters. From snakes to dots, games have odd ways of dishing out their dishes.
To elude, escape, or get away from. Some games require players to escape from some people or things to perform some objective or avoid death.
A powerful release of energy. This energy is usually expelled in all directions very quickly, typically giving off orange or red flames.
Earning an extra life, either by collecting a 1up or by hitting a certain score.
Extreme violence pertains to excessive amounts of blood, gore, or violent acts. These include decapitation, mutilation, dismemberment, amputation, defenestration, disembowelment, torture and much more.
An alluring female who uses her charms to seduce men with intention of using them to further her own intentions.
Finishing moves are typically moves that end a fight in a traditional fighting game.
Game Over originally appeared in pinball machines, and later, arcade machines. When players lose at a game, it is game over.
When the player, compared to the adversary he/she is supposed to defeat, looks like a tiny inchworm.
Giant rats are like regular rats but significantly bigger. Giant rats are the first enemy in many role playing games.
"Hand to hand. It is the basis of all combat." -Gray Fox
Health is a value that gauges how much damage players can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as life in some games. Health is usually represented by a bar or a percentage instead of an exact amount. Found in most non sport games
In many games there is a ranking system, the players with the highest point value are listed in a "high score" table.
A common type of stage featured in many games. Slippery ice, avalanches, and freezing water are some of the unpleasantries to be had when visiting these cold arctic regions.
Information on the time honored tradition of killing rats. Killing rats is a much cliched first quest for many western RPGs.
The concept of lives in video games evolved to let the player get a second chance after failing once. The most recognizable symbol is the heart.
