In video games, breaking the fourth wall occurs when a game becomes aware of its nature as a game, or when a character directly acknowledges the player.
When characters largely go by code names or call signs to protect their identities during their missions. They are also adopted for conveniences sake.
The Cobra Unit was a legendary team of soldiers that were assembled by The Boss in 1942 to combat the Axis Powers. They are the primary antagonists in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Their call signs are all emotions that they best personify when in battle.
Dead Cell was a former special U.S. Navy Seal's counter-terrorist training unit founded by President George Sears. They are the main antagonists in Metal Gear Solid 2.
The special operations group from Metal Gear Solid that serve as that game's bosses.
Genome soldiers are genetically enhanced soldiers that exist in the Metal Gear Solid universe. They were created to be the backbone of the FOXHOUND army.
Insanity is a condition whereby the sufferer is of unsound mind. Depending on the condition of the individual, he or she may be prone to fits of uncontrollable violent behavior, hallucinations, or other symptoms.
The ability to influence and control the thoughts of others.
Spawned from Nanotechnology research and Micro Electro Mechanical Systems technology, nanomachines are mainly centered around Medicine and Biology. "Nanomachine" is the term for nanite machines that use the nanometer (one-billionth of a meter) to measure it's size.
Characters that are initially portrayed as evil, but eventually turn out to be good or not as serious of a threat. This also includes villains who remain evil the entire game, but contain some sense of moral goodness or ambiguity.
Poking fun at a specific existing work, whether a game, a movie, or something else, by imitating and exaggerating its characteristics. Some games use parody here and there, while others are entirely parodic.
PMCs provide mercenary soldiers and/or military consultancy to those in need of such services in exchange for payment. They are an increasingly integral, and often controversial, part of many modern wars and conflicts.
A supersoldier is a soldier artificially given abilities far beyond those of normal humans. These include increased strength, speed, stamina, intelligence, the ability to fly, the ability to create fire with their mind, etc.
An antagonist who isn't a villain by choice and is not in control of their emotions or a victim of tragic circumstance.
A group of villains, each with a different characteristic and ability (or gimmick) that insist on fighting the protagonist one at a time. They may have ridden together, but they never die together.
