Like me, many of you have probably seen the Summer Olympics on TV and intently watched as athletes perform for the world. Unlike me, though, I hope you have been lucky enough to not buy the Beijing 2008 videogame.
Stubbornly stuck in game-play ages old, yet trying to be something new by mapping the 'mash the button' controls onto new style controllers, Beijing 2008 feels like an unhelpful trainer that delights in watching you suffer.
You will end up feeling unequipped to know if you are playing the game right through almost all of the 36 agonizing events present in this game. Brief tutorials start every event, and almost every one of them fails to accurately describe the right way to play the game. As an example, the game tells you to 'toggle' the control sticks to make your runner run, but never tells you if toggling means pressing down on the sticks, moving them back and forth, or simply pulling the back and then releasing them.
Most frustrating is how when you revert to playing the old school way (by pressing the A and B buttons), you find out that this way of play penalizes you by expecting you to have the finger speed of a god.
If you are dedicated to figuring out how to play this game, there is some reward. The problem with this is that this style of game is designed to draw in people who would not usually be playing a videogame, and more than likely this type of person will give up on the game after failing the first day of the Olympics multiple times.
Flashy graphics are not nearly enough to make up for the fact that this game, which could have been great fun, could have really been called Boredom 2008: the Official Game.
