We need to talk about David 1

David Cage is not a very good writer. For all the efforts he has put in with Fahrenheit, Heavy Rain, and now Beyond: Two Souls, he seems incapable of delivering a consistent story that does justice to his admittedly noble ambitions of genuinely emotional storytelling. In previous outings he has failed in this endeavour pretty spectacularly, regaling us with the sort of bottom drawer fiction that would embarrass even the most pathetic of failed authors. Poor voice acting, incredulous jumps in log...

A wonderfully crafted tale that ties in both cinema and gaming into one, even if a bit flawed. 1

This is the most difficult game I’ve ever had to review. How do you classify it by genre when there’s not much to the actual “game” element? How do you classify a linear narrative that involves the input of the player in order to make difficult choices? These are the things I’m struggling with in Beyond: Two Souls, Quantic Dream’s latest gaming effort. In the traditional sense, it barely feels like a fun, entertaining game that we’re used to wanting. How...

Beyond: Two Souls--A breath of fresh air 0

Video games are maturing like never before. The “interactive drama” genre is growing ever popular, with games like The Walking Dead, Heavy Rain, and now Beyond: Two Souls getting a lot of attention. Critics claim that these games are hardly that, and that they should just be made into movies instead. In speaking with GameSpot about Beyond: Two Souls, Quantic Dream’s David Cage said, “No one should be allowed to define what a game is or should be.” Look how much video games have changed since the...

Improving on its predecessors in every way, Beyond takes Quantic Dream’s vision one step closer to the ultimate goal. 0

The commitment of Quantic Dream to make a game like this work is so admirable that it’s hard not to like Beyond: Two Souls. Even though there is plenty of variety to be found within the video game industry, it’s still rare that a big budget game, published by one of the industry leaders, can be so nontraditional. Though that’s not to say Beyond is good or even an acceptable work only because it is more experimental rather than actually achieving a quality experience. It does, however, make its s...

Beyond is Quantic Dream's best game to date, yet it's still a clumsy disconnecting experience the majority of the time 0

With Beyond: Two Souls, Quantic Dream has achieved the most realised version of its distinctive form of interactive storytelling yet. This is a vision the French developer has spent the past decade trying to perfect, cutting their teeth on both the deeply flawed Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain in an attempt to bridge the gap between movies and videogames.Beyond pushes the PS3's ageing hardware to its limitsLike their previous efforts, Beyond still indulges in the studio’s bad habits, with hokey s...

"I would love to see Beyond: Two Souls adapted into a video game!" 0

"I would love to see Beyond: Two Souls adapted into a video game!"Yes, while that certainly does sound like a derisive comment to make about Quantic Dream's latest title, it is the most honest feeling I have about this game. Beyond: Two Souls is essentially a TV miniseries about the lives of Jodie and Aiden told in mildly interactive vignettes. The biggest issue with the game is that it hardly feels like you're playing. Player interaction is kept at arm's length and you'll constantly wish that y...

    Between Living and Dead 2

I wrote this orginally on my website, BruisedThumbs.com. Hope you guys enjoy. The argument of whether or not games can be more than just a game is something that has always interested Beyond: Two Souls writer and director, David Cage. He has always advocated that games can be “experiences” that allow players to travel with a playable character in the carefully orchestrated worlds he’s created. His and Quantic Dream’s last attempt at having an interactive journey, Heavy Rain, proved that this dre...

Another flawed, enjoyable interactive movie from Quantic Dream. 0

As someone who rather enjoyed developer Quantic Dream’s previous game, Heavy Rain, I had high expectations for Beyond: Two Souls. I’m well aware of the litany of issues that many point to with regards to Heavy Rain. The awkward voice acting, frustrating controls, narrative with too many holes, and pressing X to Jason were often cited to disparage the game. Despite these issues I found enough in the game's mystery and attention to the mundane to have an enjoyable experience. Beyond suffers from m...

If only it didn't have those supernatural elements... 0

Jodie Holmes isn’t your average woman. She has been tethered to a spiritual presence named Aiden since birth, a presence she has partial control over. That spirit can affect the world in a variety of ways: everything from moving objects to healing wounds and talking with the dead. For most of her formative years, she grows up in a military facility with very little interaction with people her own age. Her first job out of this facility is working with the CIA to fully utilize the unique strength...

    BEYOND: Two Souls Review 0

I have been waiting for QuanticDream to release their next video game, after playing Heavy Rain I just had an itch that could only be scratch by the right type of game. So Beyond Two Souls came out just a little bit ago, in this game you're going to play the part of a girl named Jody. Now she's a very unique individual as she has, for some "unknown" reason, a spirit tethered to her soul, which allows her the ability to do many things that a normal person can't do. You will find that in this gam...

    BEYOND: Two Souls Review 0

I am not usually the kind of person who would describe a video game as an "experience" in the same way that a guy like Peter Molyneux or indeed David Cage may describe them. I tend to enjoy the narrative of games more often than I enjoy gameplay but a game with poor gameplay is certainly going to be as much concern to me as one with a poor narrative would be. It is with this in mind that I am confused, still, as to why I was so enthralled by David Cage's latest attempt at blurring the lines betw...

    I like this game. 0

It may not be as good as The Last Of Us, but Quantic Dream did a pretty good job on making this game epic as hell. But I think the ending might have been a tad bit better? I don't really know anymore.. I've been watching videos of the production of it on YT but can't get the ending out of my head.. Not really sure it was good or bad because some aspects were good, other were.. bad.. Not really sure about the story-telling way.. But I would definitely recomend this game to anyone who hasn't playe...

It’s an experience to enjoy, a moment to witness, to be there and be absorbed in fantastic acting, but a flawed plot 0

If we take a look in the Oxford Dictionary for the meaning of video game, we see that it’s defined as “a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a monitor or other display.” That definition exhibits one of the most wonderful and powerful aspects about the video game medium – its openness allows for a huge range of video game genres and mechanics that easily surpass anything movies and music can do. That’s why we shouldn&rs...
