Overview
Big Run, also known as Jaleco Rally: Big Run - The Supreme 4WD Challenge and known in-game as 11e Rallye: Big Run - The Supreme 4WD Challenge, is a behind-the-back cross-country rally racing game developed and released by Jaleco for arcades in late 1989.
One of the earliest adaptations of the sport of rally racing, Big Run is set in the real-life Paris-Dakar Rally, which tasks players with driving their Porsche 959 through various grueling environments (both on-road and off-road) throughout Africa, from the northern coastal city of Tunis to the western coastal city of Dakar.
It plays similar to the 1986 game OutRun, with players driving forward (with a simplistic two-gear shifter) while dodging other cars and other hazards, navigating sharp turns and high jumps, and racing the countdown clock (which is replenished through checkpoints). There are six stages in total and, unlike the real event, the event is a series of sprint races.
Along with standard upright and sit-down arcade cabinets, the game was sold with a dynamic sit-down cabinet that moves along with the action. Up to four cabinets can be linked together for multiplayer races.
It later received a home conversion for the Amiga and Atari ST, ported by The Sales Curve and published by Storm exclusively in Europe in 1991. It also received a reworked same-name sequel for the Super Famicom, changing the route while adding new simulation aspects (such as car parts breaking down, sometimes requiring emergency repair and additional funding).
