It's honestly so bad it's almost funny. I takes all the fighting out of the fighting game. For some reason I'm actually enjoying just hitting A over and over again and hearing like the first syllable if what is being said. The actual game seems pretty cool so far though.
BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
Game » consists of 18 releases. Released Nov 19, 2008
Widely considered a spiritual successor to the studio's Guilty Gear series, BlazBlue is a fighting game with highly-detailed hand-drawn character graphics and a story involving sorcery and science.
Story mode in this is so bad
"So is the story mode a beat em' up or is it actually 1on1 fighting?"
story mode is 1 on 1 fightiing. It follows visual novel styles. You read text. sometimes you have to make a choice so the story branches off. Another way for the story to branch is you perform astral finish or lose certain matches.
I've actually heard good things about the story mode, but I won't know until 7/2 since that's when my copy is expected to arrive (hoping it gets here tomorrow though). Either way, I don't think the story mode is what I'm excited about playing with this game...or pretty much any fighter that has ever existed.
I need to add something to my previous statement about the online component.
There's like some random memory leak or something that happens sometimes. Like the 1st Round is always smooth, the 2nd Round could get a bit skipping at times, but the 3rd Round can feel like everything is running in slow motion.
People on GameFAQs say that this is happening on both X360 and PS3 and that a Patch for this issue is on the way... but I couldn't find any sources to back-up this claim up.
I hope they fix it soon!
I've never really played a fighting game for the story mode. I'm sure there's some good ones out there, but that was the least of my concerns. I only do story mode to unlock anything that might be there to unlock. Other then that, I just want to fight.
at least the story is better than sf4 terrible animated cutscenes and doodoo story or whatever you want to call it. actually its way better that sf4's, IMO
compared to its predecessor's story mode (Guilty Gear) the story mode in BlazBlue is abyssmal. The story itself is fine for a fighting game (it actually manages to technically make all the endings canon), but man if purposely having to lose just to get 100% isn't bad game design I don't know what is.

"This. This is not a good idea at all. But did you not also have to do this in GG X2 #Reload to attain certain story paths too?
Dude, you think that's bad, play "The Gauntlet" on Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny for 5 minutes and try telling me it doesn't make you want to kill yourself.
You are right, but my main gripe with BlazBlue is that it boots you to the Game Over screen and then to the title which is just a waste of time. With Guilty Gear, if you lost a battle that didn't have a story path to it, you had the option to immediately retry.
You also don't have to lose Every Single MotherF***ing Match in Guilty Gear to get the whole story in that series.
Losing to get more story in itself isn't bad game design, just having to do it with every match while the game boots you back to the title screen while rubbing your face with a Game Over screen is.
Edit: Just to make it clear; I do like BlazBlue, but that doesn't mean I can't be critical about its faults.
Lol, way to keep bringing-up old threads!
Anyway, in my opinion, BlazBlue has the best Fighting Game Story of all time out of any Fighter ever made, ever... if anyone thinks it's "bad" then they probably don't understand the full plot, which is actually kinda kewl when you think about it.
So, with that said, why was this Topic even made in the first place?
I think it is fine, but they do a bad job explaining things to the player. I watched the "Teach me, Miss Litchi!" videos on youtube before I got the game so I had a handle on what was going on. It is too bad you have to 100% certain characters stories in the game in order to see them in the game.
The plot is okay, its just a kind of generic action game/shonen anime plot. But it is done pretty well at points so I don't mind it so much.
Personally, I found the story to be pretty entertaining. Yes, the way it's told is confusing, and some of the requirements to get 100% are a pain, but the game also goes the extra mile that few fighting games do for their stories. I'd certainly prefer more games go the BlazBlue route than the traditional "Clobber dudes, clobber story dude, clobber more dudes, clobber boss" route that most games take, and many don't even include the story dude in the middle.
I guess what really bums me out about this thread is that people still seem to insist that it's impossible for a fighting game to tell a good story.
