A generic and repetitive beat em' up

    Pros:

    • -Good art direction
    • -Combat is solid and brutal

    Cons:

    • -Too Short
    • -Enemies lack variety
    • -Controls take getting used to
    • -Gameplay becomes overly repetitive
    • -Too difficult in a "cheap" kind of way

Blood Rayne Betrayal is a side-scrolling beat em' up that fails to stand out from the crowd. It doesn't introduce any new aspects and for what it does do, it does average or worse at best, resulting in a generic experience.

Combat in Betrayal is as bloody as they come
Combat in Betrayal is as bloody as they come

The story line is practically non existant, Rayne is simply killing random enemies and proceeds to move to the right of the screen, that's basically the entire premise for this game. Fight generic bad guys, move right, fight generic bad guys, move right again. Over and over. Fortunately however, the combat it's self is quite solid. Rayne has a decent amount of attacks at disposal and they are all very flashy, she cuts and slices enemies apart with ease and thanks to the great art direction, it looks pretty (in a bloody kind of way).

The visuals are certainly impressive. Betrayal makes excellent of it's art direction, characters look well portrayed, backgrounds look like something straight out of a comic book, it's all great to look at. However when it comes to it's gameplay it's a bit of a mixed bag, while as I mentioned above that the core combat is solid, that factor doesn't make for the very repetitive pacing of the game. Betrayal has little to no variety, the game only has a few types of enemies and you'll encounter the same one's again and again. It's also overly difficult, and not in a good challenging way. The game often relies on cheap deaths by throwing an insane number of enemies at you in a small area, making your success based more on luck at times instead of actual skill.

Betrayal's art style is it's greatest aspect

Some of Betrayals controls can take some getting used to, especially when it comes to jumping and doing acrobatic moves. It would have been better if they refined these elements before they released it, but once you get used to the controls this becomes a fairly minor issue. Betrayal is also a short experience, making it hard to recommend a purchase.

    Final Verdict:

Blood Rayne Betrayal is not a bad game, it does have it's enjoyable aspects. But it's not exactly a good game either, it's simply too generic for it's own good. It lacks the quality that other games in the same genre do and has some bad design elements. This, combined with it's short length and repetitive gameplay, makes Betrayal not worth your money. If you're looking for a beat em' up, there are far better options available.

    Blood Rayne Betrayal get's a 3/5

Fun to Look at, not to Play with. 0

I must preface this review by stating that I am a virgin to the BloodRayne series. Not until this new switch from 3-D to 2-D did it get my attention to play as the Dhampir. Oh what bloody a night it was when my BR cherry was popped. I honestly have no idea how this game got T for Teen rating; decapitations, exposed organs, and jetting bloodstreams are constantly filling the screen, but all of it is beautiful. I've never seen 2-D animation look so detailed and fluid in motion till BloodRayne Betr...

I remember the day when Majesco press-released to the world their plans to create a pan-media empire out of a new vampire franchise called Bloodrayne. There would be games. There would be comic books. There would be movies. There would be a Playboy spread. The logo looked like a cross getting titty-fucked. I would like to believe those comics turned out okay, because the movies were gutter trash, the games were sub-average and the Playboy spread was as weird to look at as you think it would be. ...
