Board Game

A board game is a game played on a mostly-static surface using markers or chits to indicate player progress. Many video game board games are based on tabletop games (Catan, Monopoly), but some, like Mario Party and Culdcept, are original designs that use board game design as a starting point.

Card Based Combat

A game where cards are used to fight your enemies, or one where you make a "deck" with different abilites. Some examples are Culdcept Saga, Yggdra Union, and Phantom Dust.

One of the world's oldest board games, using eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a queen and king.

A six sided geometrical shape sometimes used in strategy, puzzle, and board games.
Random Number Generation

A Random Number Generator (hence RNG) is a system designed to randomize a sequence of numbers. Most games technically use a table of 'random' numbers, simulating random chance.
Reversi

Also known as Othello, this strategic board game uses round pieces with a different color on either side. When pieces of one color form a straight line between two pieces of the other color, the middle pieces are flipped over.
RPG Elements

Game mechanics traditionally found in role-playing games that are incorporated into a non-RPG title.
Shogi

A traditional Japanese board game also known as Japanese chess.
Sugoroku

A series of Japanese board games in which players use dice to move their pieces forward, usually with special events that happen on certain spaces in the track.
Tactical Turn-Based Combat

Gameplay type emphasizing deliberately paced tactical battle where each side politely takes turns moving and attacking one another through varied forms of combat.
Turn-Based

Turn-based games divide game actions into distinct parts, called turns. This gives the player time to strategically choose actions as the battle or events unfold.
Word Games

Games (usually board games) where players make use of letters to find or form words. It can be anything from word searches to Scrabble.
