Following up from the thread a while ago about Brad Muir leaving Double Fine... well it looks like he's found some new digs up in Seattle (Edit: I guess Valve is technically in Bellevue. Curse my limited knowledge of American Geography), starting this December.

Needless to say I'm excited. Valve is an interesting company and Brad Muir made some really great games with Double Fine. Hopefully this continues at Valve and we see something with the Muir name on it before too long. To be honest it seems like a match made in heaven to me, for reasons I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe it's the Dota. We will never know.

So let's all wish @mrmooear good luck and give him a big :D!

IT is a lame joke on the fact that some people think Valve doesn't make games anymore and is just steam.

Though working at valve is probably considered one of the best gigs in the industry. Getting in is pretty hard.

Financially Valve is very stable so working there is probably less rocky than at Double Fine where getting a game financed can mean the difference between having a job and being laid off.

I guess he will be busy making Dota characters do double salutes. At least that will make the game better to look at.

Oh god. Does no one remember Clint Hocking spent nearly 2 years at Valve doing nothing?

    I remember.

It's amazing to me that anyone would see this as a good move from a creative standpoint. The way Valve is structured means very little gets done, because anyone can join or leave your project at any time. I imagine people spend more time cajoling and playing diplomat just to get something going than actually creating something. Not to mention it's far easier to keep the economies of their various F2P games moving than it is to actually build a new game.

It's frustrating as hell from a customer standpoint. Valve was once one of the best developers in the industry, and now they've essentially Raven Software'd themselves.

    Congrats Brad :D

But the cynical side of me says that Valve don't make games any more... (just add on content to their own games - and very infrequently sequels to their biggest games after many years of fruitless trial and error)

if you want sequels, i can see where it'd be somewhat frustrating. but given the amount of talented people they've assembled under one roof, i'm actually quite happy to have them tinker behind the scenes. with the controller, streaming box, and vive all around the corner- they're about to make a big push into hardware which is new and exciting territory for them.

again, not games- but i i think it does elevate the gaming landscape as a whole, so it doesn't really grind my gears.

@mellotronrules: Plus they've helped, and continue to help, tons of other developers sell and get the chance to make games of their own (for a profit yes, but point is Steam has been great for PC gaming and indie developers). Valve is just a different company now and they're good at what they do. There are plenty of other games to play. And hell, they make a couple fantastic ones still even if they aren't to my taste and I'd bet they will release some other games, if infrequently.

I am guessing Brad might want to work on DOTA 2 (a game he is obsessed with) and have a stable position (he has a family now) rather than make another small game for Doublefine. Makes sense to me.

I am no DOTA fan and I try to not follow it too much, but I think there's more work constantly going into it then people say here.

Valve is bound to create more games at some point. They probably have a bunch of stuff internally but are not interested in putting out anything less than perfectly polished, sort of like Blizzard tries to.

Hey, I wish him luck...sadly he might needed it. It not like you hear great things about working there sometimes. I guess if you get in the right "high school click" there things go fine, if you get stuck at the "other kids table" your life is miserable.
