A mostly successful nostalgic adventure through one of the point and click genres classic franchises.
As a long term fan of the Broken Sword series, "Broken Sword 5 - The Serpent's Curse" is both a lovely trip down memory lane and a mostly successful adventure in its own right.
Seeing the return of George and Nico to a 2D adventure is a very welcome thing, the backgrounds are all beautiful throughout the entire game and I would look forward to each new location to see what it would look like, just as much as I was to continue the story. The 3D model based sprites used in the game while not a perfect fit (sometimes appearing to be out of perspective with environments or simply standing out too much) do a great job of conveying the colourful and exciting world the game inhabits. I personally would love to see a return to 2D hand animated characters, but it is obviously something that it's too expensive for a game created through kickstarter and that's understandable.
The story for the most part is a success, an interesting and sometimes mysterious adventure into another hidden powerful religious artefact although at points it feels predictable and formulaic with the rest of the series, especially in the second episode which sadly to me felt a little padded and included some odd/unbelievable decision making from some characters and an ending that can sadly only be described as a bit lazy and pandering, bordering on fan-fiction.
The music as always is spectacular and brought me right back to what I loved about the series within seconds of booting up the game.
Overall I would say this game is a success however and I really can't wait to see what's next for George and Nico. Hopefully a little less reliance on nostalgia but bring on Broken Sword 6! I'm ready!
