Short but very very sweet
This is a game that really takes you for an emotional ride. The experience only last for about 3 - 4 hours, but its very engaging, and I was tearing up by the end of the game.
The first game that I was reminded of while playing through Brothers is Journey for the PS3. It has fantastic art direction, is short, has a similar feel and gameplay, and really packs the same kind of emotional punch. This game is not co-op. You control each of the brothers with one of the analog sticks. Each of the brothers has their own specialties, and you need to use their respective strengths to get through the game. The older brother is physically stronger, but the younger one is smaller and more agile. It can be a little tricky to get used to controlling the brothers. Although I got better at using the brothers simultaneously, by the end of the game I still had some trouble. It's challenging at parts, but mostly on the easy side. I played on PC with a 360 controller. I would have preferred to play with my PS3 controller, but the game had trouble recognizing it, even with the MotionInJoy codec. I've heard playing on keyboard is non-optimal.
There is no dialog in the game. All of the story is conveyed through fantastic cut scenes, beautiful graphics and a random made up language. I was reminded of games like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus on this point.
The more I played the more invested I became. The game has some very dark moments to it which I was surprised to see, especially after the light-hearted romp through the first chapter.
All in all a great game, and an experience that you won't forget thanks to the story, environments, unique gameplay and art direction.
I picked this game up during the Steam Summer sale for 2.99, and spent 3.9 hours with it.
