We started with Quake 4 on this quest to look back at the beginning of this generation to see how far games have come. Now lets look at the 360 version Call of Duty 2. This Call of Duty is probably my favorite WWII COD, if not my favorite in the whole series. It's also one of the first examples of playing a console version of a PC shooter without making a lot of technical sacrifices.

You can find my Quake 4 video here.

I just watched a little bit of your Quake 4 video and this one seems like a massive improvement. Keep up the good work!

You did a great job of combining historical information about the game and your opinion of it. Informative and engaging. I also like keeping to the GB method of no cuts in the video. Gives a real impression of the game. Well done. Keep it up!

I think the thing to pay attention to going forward is picking levels that are representative of the game. With only 15 minutes to show it, choosing a D-Day level here was a great way to show us what COD2 was about for you. So, keep that up with the other games. Looking forward to more!

Thanks! The audio problem was odd because the sound levels I see weren't indicative of how loud or quite I actually sound. Plus I just figured out how to easily manipulate the audio levels in my editing program.

I remember the flip phone version of CoD II fondly. It was a top down class based squad shooter. It kind of controlled like ass but for the cell phone technology of the time it was pretty impressive. Unfortunately my PC was able to run the demo of CoD II but could not run the retail game. I was one graphics card tier short. So basically my experience with CoD II is a mix of the PC demo, the phone version and that 5 hour Tournament TV that gamespot hosted.

Call of Duty Finest Hour was my first Call of Duty game too, heh. I too remember being blown away by how great this game looked when it came out, and it's probably my favorite WIII game. The mission structure was pretty much the same throughout, but the overall package is just so damn solid.

And you're right, it would be awesome to see a D-Day mission with current technology.

Your next step is to make a real sick-ass flashy intro that's about 45 seconds long with lots of 3D effects and shit music that will fill me with so much rage that I will get tired of skipping it every time I watch your damn videos and then I will unsubscribe because that will show you!

Nice work. I remember seeing early screenshots of the 360 version in like, EGM or something, and being completely blown away at the lighting and photorealism of a console game. How far we've come, on the same damn machine to boot!

If he's like me I'm wanting a more story-oriented WWII game, not an RTS. But yes, it's good to have a new game coming in that setting.

That was pretty fun to watch, I'd be hesitant to moan about you getting lost in this video and in the Quake 4 one because I am sure I'd do the same under the circumstances.

As for a new world war 2 game, I'd love to see Bohemia have a crack at it after finishing Arma 3, that level of detail and accuracy on a massive scale would be fantastic. Dice would do a good job going back to their roots as well.

Maybe I'm just ridin' high on nostalgia but this was probably the most fun I had in multiplayer with any Call of Duty. Or maybe I have just been getting worse at CoD since then.

The first F.E.A.R came out on the PC a month before the 360's launch and eventually was ported later.

I'd love to see what you think about CoD3. I personally preferred it over 2, for the same reason I tend to prefer Treyarch's games over IW's. The characters and stories in 3 were much more engaging and felt more like a WW2 battle, even if 3 and Big Red One took their cues from 50s and 60s WWII films. That said, Call of Duty 2 holds up damned well. It's a very fun game and, save for the frame rate issues, could easily be placed aside modern games. And I don't mind the shooting gallery thing, as it's a whole hell of a lot better than spending a damned hour looking for the red keycard.

As for WWII games, I agree that there's plenty of life left in the setting. The problem is that there was just so much focus on Normandy that we got sick of it. That's another thing I liked about Treyarch, using less traditional game settings, such as the Falaise Gap in 3 or the extensive Russian march to Berlin and the Pacific Theater in World at War. We need to stop using the Normandy landing and look at other points in the war that would make for fine gaming experiences if WW2 is to be a setting that people can play without being tired of. Seriously, the Normany landing was becoming Hoth for a while there.

Good work, CQC Steve. COD 2 back then was easily one of the most intense experiences I had. I remember my hands sweating at the end of most of the missions. Must've been that impressed by the frame rate or something.
