Call of Duty: World at War

Game » consists of 21 releases. Released Nov 11, 2008

The fifth installment of the Call of Duty series, bringing most of the gameplay and graphical improvements of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare back to World War II conflict. It is also the first Call of Duty game set in the Pacific Theater.

So I just completed Call of Duty: WaW on Veteran.

And I've got to say, it's one of the most frustratingly hard games I've ever played. The funny thing is though, is that it's not actually a hard game, the only reason it's hard in my books is this:

    • CONSTANT GRENADE SPAM

The amount of times I had to dodge greandes in "The Heart of the Reich", was ridiculous! I hope they re-think a way to make Veteran hard without the endless grenades descending from the heavens. I am aware that Modern Warfare and World at War were developed by seperate companies, but I still hope that Modern Warfare 2 doesn't go in this direction.

Besides that I thought it was a kickass game, definately one of the best in what it does.

If i remember correctly COD4 and COD2 had the same problem. Enemies can throw grenades at insane distances, and pretty much hit you where ever you may hide your self.

And the infinite re-spawns dont help you either.

Congratulations, dude. That's something I wasn't able to do. I only rented it, though, and ended up giving up on the game on veteran during that flamethrower level. Still I really enjoyed the game and think it's way better than it gets credit for, but veteran was pretty freaking ridiculous. You're right, the grenades were totally out of hand.

The hardest difficulty in games have frequently relied on cheap tactics to make the game seem harder. The fact of the matter is that if your A.I. isn't good enough to adapt  and react to things as they do in say Halo or Fear, you're looking at a more frustrating than challenging experience.

Even on normal it is an annoying grenade fest at times, I can't even imagine how frustrating it is on veteran.

@pornstorestiffi: Yes, the infinite respawns crippled me during the sniper mission on Call of Duty 4, I just couldn't hold out for a LONG time. Eventually did it thankfully.

I don't think the grenades were that bad on COD4. I'll admit there were certainly more of them on the sniper mission but with that exception I felt that veteran was difficult because the AI was clever. Completing a COD4 level on veteran felt satisfying, especially Mile High Club. The only satisfaction I got out of COD5 was returning it to Blockbusters and knowing that with the voucher I had it cost me nothing. It was a real shame as well because I felt that the campaign had a good story and was well paced; excluding the lazy AI grenade programming making you move on prematurely. I think IIImatic's description of cheap tactics sums up the problem perfectly and what really annoys me is the fact that these "tactics" have completely tarnished my view of that game.

Also, if that game was historically accurate, how much money must the Japanese have invested in the production of grenades????

As someone mentioned above it's the same on older COD games, i remember it being a real pain at some of the COD3 levels. It's part of the reason i don't even bother trying CoD games on Veteran, i really wanted to try for the 1000GS but it's not worth the agro! Also it really puts you off some of the better aspects of the game.

I have done W@W on veteren and it is a right pisser to do. Hard enough without the Grenade spamming yet I did it. I felt so proud when I did it too. At times I wanted to give up but I kep telling myself 'You finished COD2 on veteren you can do this too'!

MW for xmas for me, hope the greneades are less spammy!
