Here’s a fun one: Polish developer Techland has revealed that it’s working on a third installment in the Call of Juarez franchise, but unlike the other two titles, it won't be set in the Wild West. No, instead, it’ll be set in the modern world

I’m not making this up. In a press release issued today, publisher Ubisoft said Call of Juarez: The Cartel will feature “the best elements of the Wild West” in a modern setting. An EGM exclusive is keeping the details light at the moment, but we do know that the game will include two locales: Los Angeles and Juarez, Mexico.  Also, it's slated for release on the Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 this summer.

== TEASER ==No-one bought this at the time, but a site called Gamers accurately reported on The Cartel’s setting switch in December, 2010. According to the now-believable report, The Cartel will feature four-player co-op and a “corruption” mechanic that’ll pit players against each other. The intel (or translation) here is sketchy, but if true, you’ll be able to take side-missions via cell phone that you don’t want your pals to know about.

Among the other things this article confirms: car chase and shooting segments, hacking, and bullet time. I guess you should still take this aside stuff with a grain of salt, but we'll get confirmation soon enough. Said issue of EGM hits on Feb. 9, 2011.

Well, changing a game's setting to something more contemporary worked for Call of Duty so surely it will work here, right!?

I never really liked Call of Juarez, but this smacks of desperation. Instead of having a somewhat unique and interesting setting, it's going to look like far more games, far more of which are probably better.

At least they are trying new things, which most people are too scared to do.So props to them for that.Though the whole cartel thing just worries me, just more fuel for the media's perception of Latinos as no good drug dealers.

Aren't   “the best elements of the Wild West” the fact that there's no cars or laser sights or guns that don't suck? What possible classic West element would play in a modern setting?

This is awesome! Here's hoping for a gritty tale in the vein of Cormac McCarthy or Elmore Leonard. This is pretty much the only thing they could have done to get me interested in it. The only thing i'm concerned about is 'hacking'. Cowboys don't hack.

I don't know why so many people on here are pooh-pooing this idea.  Having a Western take place in an unconventional  period worked for No Country for Old Men, it worked for Firefly, and it can work for Call of Juarez.  And yes, they're doing something similar to Call of Duty inasmuch as they're taking their franchise in a new direction so as to keep it from getting stale.  Is that a bad thing?  Sure, rag on Juarez for being middling games, but this idea isn't worthy of ridicule.

Very disappointing to see it drop the old west setting.. Would have rather see them stick with that and expand upon the open world they briefly touched upon in the second game.  There was a lot of potential there.

Now it's up to one man and his crew to clean up the drug infested streets of Mexico...our UAV is online.

I would say it's a cool new idea but this just reeks of riding that modern warfare bandwagon by setting it in the present day.

I hope I'm wrong this this turns out into one amazing game.

    His hat's too small.......

And it occurs to me, doesn't have to be some gringo either. I remember a pretty good news story about a mexican cop battling both tht cartels and the bad guys on his own side. A little bit larger than life, maybe, but isn't that the point, especially for a vid game?

This smells like someone from marketing decided to be a game developer.

Head of Marketing:  "You know what's hot right now?! Modern First Person Shooters! With a crime story! And drugs! That's what kids want these days! Drugs, violence, and modern urban combat! Jenkins! I want to see you promoting our modern action crime story strategy by making one of our franchises use it! How about this Call of Jar -rez or whatever it is!?"

Jenkins: "But it's about the old west, and I don't know anything about developing games, just selling them..."

Head of Marketing: "GOD DAMNIT JENKINS! Quit talkin' that weak ass game, or we'll miss out our chance to hit up that kind of rush while this gravy train is still rolling!"

    Jenkins: "...what?"

Call of Juarez  did fairly well because it was one of the very few modern Western themed games. Now RDR exists, I guess they've realised that Rockstar now own the Western niche and have backed off to just make the most generic game setting of all time.

A "modern" western could be decent. Shame I don't have faith this developer can pull it off. I don't know, though. We shall see.

Agree to disagree. I thought the second game was great and so did many critics who I'm sure have pretty high standards of quality playing tons of game AS a job.
