Challengers Games is the developer of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) anime shooter game, Second Wave.
History
Challengers Games was founded in 2022 with the goal of developing games that would be fun and replayable, starting with the first game Project B, as it would be revealed on January 28, 2023 as Second Wave.
The studio was created after Challengers Games CEO Tamura Koji, had worked on the popular MMORPG TERA and had led the development team for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game. Having left Krafton, he was able to negotiate with various companies until finally, the creators of Eternal Return, Nimble Neuron, agreed to allow him to create a subsidiary called Challengers Studio. The studio's first objective was to create a console version of the popular anime battle-royale game, Eternal Return.
Soon after the announcement and interview with Tamura Koji and Kakao Games, the project came to a halt. Challengers Studio was dismantled, and in July 2022 Tamura Koji would re-emerge with his own studio under the name Challengers Games, with no parent company. During this time, he had drawn some sketches and ideas of what he'd like to create, and began writing the story of Second Wave and the lore behind the world of Armantia, the fictional continent where the game takes place.
In August 2022, it was announced quietly that a brand-new game was being developed with the title Project B. On January 28, 2023, the name reveal of Second Wave was unveiled along with key details about the lore of the game. On March 20, 2023, the game's gameplay was unveiled during the studio's presentation at GDC (Game Developers Conference) 2023, along with information that Xbox was providing the studio a special fund through its ID@Xbox program in order to assist the developer in bringing the game to life.
