Extraterrestrials appear in many video games in a variety of styles. Sometimes they're evil, sometimes they're benevolent, and sometimes they're very similar to humans.
In games, the player is usually the ambushee, not the ambusher, but certain multiplayer, stealth and open-world games give players a chance to try this sneaky tactic themselves.
Anthropomorphism is the concept of an object, concept or character that has human qualities or traits, such as speech, a level of intelligence similar or higher than a human's and self consciousness. "Anthro" means "of human" and related to the concept of humanity.
In these games, there is an actual number or meter on-screen that shows how much armor the player has. Rather than being treated like equipment or a power-up, this armor serves more as a secondary health pool.
Games that contain levels/missions/chapters where the player starts off in immediate danger.
Necessary to sustain life in organic creatures, the crimson fluid known as blood tends to make appearances when the body's structure is compromised in some way, a very, very common occurrence in videogames.
Body armor in games acts as additional protection. In most cases, when a player takes damage that would completely affect their health, their body armor reduces the damage taken or takes the damage instead.
Glass that can be broken and destroyed in real-time.
A stereotypical prehistoric human, usually clad in animal skins and rather violent. Does not always live in a cave.
A trap designed to kill off victims by crushing them. Commonly found in sacred temples though industrial variations (like car crushers) exist.
Darkness is used in games to restrict access, increase tension, or just to set a mood. Often the player has access to a light source that can mitigate its effect.
A destructible environment means the player has the ability to destroy his/her surroundings. This allows players to use the environment to their advantage.
Removing a weapon or item from another person/creature so you can make use of it. Useful for stealth based games.
The severing of limbs is a good way for designers to make every battle a bloodier, gorier mess. Or sillier in the right situations.
Some enemies require the player to destroy them from the inside. Examples include the lake boss from The Nexus boat sequence in Gears Of War 2
Any weapon that shoots laser and plasma beams or energy bolts rather than conventional bullets.
A door that players must go through to exit the level
An Expansion brings new missions, modes & new story elements to a full product title. Expansions typically require a full version game to function, but there are also stand-alone packs as well.
Either through a concealing helmet, keeping the whole game in first person, or using clever camera work, the player character is kept faceless throughout an entire game.
First-Person is a vantage point that attempts to simulate looking through a game character's eyes. It is most commonly found in first-person shooters, racing games, and visual novels, and to a lesser extent in other genres, such as RPGs, 3D platformers, and adventure games.
Enemies that prefer to keep a distance to the ground, and swoop down occasionally to do some damage.
The concept of a game referencing another game through mockery, parody or even directly. A game reference to the same franchise does not count.
Gibs (giblets) are, basically, what's left of someone after they make contact with an explosive object or powerful weapon. They can be seen in games such as Doom, Quake, Team Fortress 2 and many, many more.
A feature in some games on the GOG.com service. Unlocked only while using the GOG Galaxy client.
A system that gives a game the technical capability to implement the effects of gore which include but are not limited to, dismemberment, charring, beheading and gibbing. Gore systems have progressed significantly over the years from enemies scattering into pixels to highly detailed body tearing.
HD Remaster is a term to a single game that has been updated to conform with the HD standards on that console.
Health is a value that gauges how much damage players can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as life in some games. Health is usually represented by a bar or a percentage instead of an exact amount. Found in most non sport games
A concept in a game where the playable character can't run out of ammo, and doesn't need to pick up/buy ammo. In some cases, you still have to reload your weapon, but you will still have an endless amount of magazines.
The ability for the player to become unseen, from basic camouflage to fully vanishing from sight.
A person employed to tell jokes and provide general entertainment. Jesters share some resemblance with clowns in that both have a reputation for being creepy rather than funny. Most of the jesters that are placed in games focus solely on the aspect of being creepy and scary.
