Chook & Sosig: Walk the Plank

Overview

Chook & Sosig: Walk the Plank is an upcoming point-and-click adventure from artist and one-woman development studio, New Zealand-based TookiPalooki. It follows the tabletop adventures of Sosig, a gangly blue cat, their best friend Chook, a ghost chicken only Sosig can see, and their other oddball friends. The game is illustrated entirely by hand, and aims to be a lighthearted, silly and surreal title anyone can play regardless of skill level. The game is slated to be released on Steam in 2019 for PC and Mac.

Plot

As the game begins, Sosig is sitting down to play a pirated themed Dungeons & Dragons-style tabletop game run by their friend Exley, with help from Chook. Also gathered are would-be troll Hebble, patient and laid-back Min, and of course, Cow, who is as exciteable as an undead cow head mounted on a wall plaque can be. Sosig has never played before, but quickly gets into the swing of things with the help of Chook, as they search for a legendary pirate treasure. They gain access to a pirate ship and must explore the surrounding islands, solving puzzles and looking for clues, all while dealing with the sometimes conflicting egos and story ideas of their friends who aren't always keen to play along with Exley's story. The game features two distinct endings, and places an emphasis on humor and a cozy atmosphere.

Gameplay

The game is a very traditional point-and-click adventure. Players click on the screen both to navigate and interact with characters or items, gathering objects in their inventory where they can combine them, or carry them around for future use. Though they begin the game on a small starter island, they will unlock others as the game progresses and the map they discover expands. There are two different endings for the player to unlock. Rather than being as complex as certain classics of the genre, Chook & Sosig: Walk the Plank plans to be more story and character focused.

History

Chook & Sosig originally starred in a series of four short freeware adventure games, playable on itch.io. TookiPalooki created the duo and began experimenting with them as a means to teach herself how to make games after becoming interested in doing so. The original game was a Play by Play Excellence in Art winner for 2017. This is TookiPalooki's first commercial title.
